GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - What does a possible Walmart grocery store mean for the proposed New Leaf Market co-op just across the river along Main Street in downtown Green Bay.

The New Leaf board meets Tuesday and that topic will be on the minds of board members.

Board President Lynn Walter doesn’t feel Walmart changes anything.

"It's to early in the process, Walmart hasn't made it's plans clear, other than to put an option on that property" Walter said.

Walmart is looking at an empty parcel that is part of the vacant Larsen canning company property along North Broadway.

New Leaf has secured a site along Main Street adjacent to Whitney Park. The site includes the current Greyhound bus station, which will be demolished.

Walters says they are waiting until there is more hard data, noting that Walmart hasn’t proposed anything at this point, so they are not going to speculate. Walters says if conditions do change, their market study may need to be updated.

“If conditions change we may have to redo our market study, but that is not our plan right now” Walter said.

As they have unveiled more of the site plans in recent weeks, membership has grown to over 700 members. The goal is to get to 1,500 by their expected opening date for next summer or fall.

New Leaf is around a $6 million project that’s been in the works for years.

“In the process of working on our capital campaign, and have launched part of the private part and will launching the member loan campaign after Labor Day” Walter said.

SHAWANO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - We're learning more about a fatal crash on Highway 29 early Tuesday that shut down traffic in that area for six hours.

Shawano County Sheriff's say a Menasha man was killed when he slammed his SUV head-on into a semi tractor trailer on Highway 29 at Highway 160 around 12:47 a.m.

35-year-old Keith L. Carpenter drove a black 1999 Mercury Mountaineer westbound and struck the semi. The semi was driven by 42-year-old Scott Strom of Pulaski. 24-year-old Joseph Sobieski of Abrams was a passenger in the semi.

Menasha police say at 1:25 a.m. Tuesday, they issued an "attempt to locate" for the SUV and Keith Carpenter. Authorities say they wanted to arrest Carpenter for a domestic disturbance that occurred earlier in the night involving a male and female relative.

Shawano County sheriff's and Menasha police officials believe the vehicle is the same SUV involved in the crash.

Witnesses tell the sheriff's department that about 2 minutes before the crash, a black SUV passed the semi going eastbound at a high rate of speed. They also indicate that the SUV going westbound had turned off its lights before striking the semi.

According to authorities, the SUV started on fire and burned until it was extinguished by the Pulaski Fire Department. Both vehicles came to rest in the median, with the semi blocking both westbound lanes of traffic. There was a large diesel fuel spill and debris that shutdown the eastbound lanes. The SUV and semi both sustained severe damage.
