GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The Holiday Season, with parties, shopping, and overall running around, can often be a time when good eating habits go to die. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Corissa Conard is a personal trainer at the Greater Green Bay YMCA, and currently studying nutrition.

She says there's a rule to follow...and it doesn't mean denying yourself holiday goodies.

"Tell my clients about the 80-20 rule. So, 80 percent of the time eat healthy...20 percent of the time enjoy those treats here and there."

Conard says that's a philosophy that works throughout the year.

"You have to have the mindset, like I don't need to indulge in all of this just because it is the holidays."

Portion size is important too. Try to use the palm of your hand as a guide.

There's also recipes out there that are healthy and just as tasty.

But if you fall off the rails, Conard says don't get discouraged.

"Those days do happen, and it's OK. Just knowing how to get back on the right track."

And don't punish yourself.

"Eat a piece of the pie, share it with someone, just don't eat the whole thing."

Ideas for healthy eating and programs that keep you in tip-top shape are available at the Greater Green Bay YMCA. For more information click here.

FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) – Various groups in the Fond du Lac area are joining forces to combat what they say is a significant problem in the community.

Law enforcement, county prosecutors, health officials, and service providers will all be on hand for a town hall meeting on methamphetamine.

Fond du Lac Police Chief Bill Lamb says “some of the drug investigators are already, dating back to 2016, seizing more meth than they are heroin or opioids.”

Lamb says law enforcement officers are not the only ones taking note.

“One of the treatment facilities here in the area has reported that they’re seeing more of their clientele dealing with meth than heroin or opioids.”

Lamb notes the opioid epidemic has by no means left the area.

However, he says they’re hoping to learn from its onset in trying to quell the meth issue.

“We don’t want to see a repeat occurrence as we did with the heroin and opioids, in that it catches communities off guard.”

The town hall scheduled for 6:30 pm on Thursday, November 30 at the Goodrich Little Theatre, 72 West Ninth Street in Fond du Lac.

This marks the beginning of a prevention and awareness campaign being launched by Fond du Lac Police and Drug Free Communities of Fond du Lac County.

Scheduled panelists at the town hall include: Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney, Fond du Lac Police Chief Bill Lamb, Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation Supervisory Special Agent Brad Dunlap, Clinical Supervisor Addiction Services’ Amy Johannes, and Fond du Lac Public Health Officer Kim Mueller.

The event is free and open to the public.

BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - A plea hearing has been scheduled for the former boyfriend of a murder victim who is charged in a domestic incident involving her sister.

Douglass Detrie is due back in court January 8, following Monday's scheduling conference, on charges that he made advances on Nicole VanderHeyden's sister Heather Meyer while they were driving together in Allouez back in February.

When she refused, Detrie reportedly would not let Meyer out of the car and sped off, before finally stopping several miles down the road.

VanderHeyden was killed in May 2016 in Bellevue.

Detrie was originally arrested for her murder but was never charged.

George Burch has been charged in connection with VanderHeyden's death.  His attorneys are expected to present arguments that Detrie is the actual killer when Burch's trial starts February 16.

MADISON, WI (WTAQ)-- A bill signed Monday is considered the first step towards fighting homelessness for the first time in Wisconsin's history.

Author of one of the bills, Representative Jim Steineke says the bills are aimed at taking a first step towards ending homelessness and preventing it.

"We realized how big this issue is and we came up with a package of bills to try to address this problem."

Governor Walker has signed a bill that creates a new council to combat the issue.

"They are going to be tasked with developing policies that help the community" Steineke said.

The Interagency Council on Homelessness will consist of representation from eight agencies that work directly with the homelessness issue.

The Council will create a comprehensive, strategic plan to address the issue.

"Northeast Wisconsin has an issue with homelessness as well, we just don't typically see them on the streets."

Steineke said the problem is more noticeable in Milwaukee and Madison, but some will stay with friends or family, and therefore go unnoticed.

"This is small first step."

Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch will head the council, which brings together eight agencies.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ)- Scammers continue to find creative ways to ruin your holidays, now consumers need to be careful when they ship gifts.

With an influx of online shopping, scammers are trying to catch you off guard, but not as a targeted victim, says Michelle Reinen of the Bureau of Consumer Protection.

"Scam artists are just sending these blasts out to people. They just know there is so much online holiday shopping."

Reinen says emails requesting information or money from you before it can be shipped is one of the many examples, and you won't be a victim if you stay clear from clicking.

"Just delete it. Don't open it or do anything with it."

Reinen said these scams are easy to detect if you just take the time to look.

Poor grammar, spelling errors and strange looking email addresses are all red flags.

A strong amount of internet traffic, is opening the door for scam artists.

"They are really good at impersenating the big box stores and getting you to click."

FedEx provided some examples of the scams used.

***FedEx has custody of the victims ATM card and paying $85 dollars and filling out information will release it.

***The victims package is registered in special order and needs to be verified by clicking on the link.

***The victim is told that the address they are trying to send to is not correct and they need to click on a link that will allow them to print out an invoice that they can bring to the office to pick up their package.

***One email states they need to talk to the victim about their package and they need to click the link for the contact information.

Reinen says people are falling for all of them.

Tis The Season For Holiday Package Thieves

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - Thieves are already on the move, and on the run, with packages left outside people's doors.

According to Green Bay Police, a number of stolen deliveries have already been reported.

Daniel Zehms tells FOX 11 living on a busy street can be concerning.

"We're on a main street here and a lot of people walk back and forth in the street and it doesn't take much for it to walk off the doorstep."

Knowing delivery thefts are possible, Zehms takes precautions.

"If it's a big item, we normally have it dropped off at where my wife works because she's there all the time." Not only is it important to deliver packages to a secure location but police are urging people to require a signature.

Capt. Kevin Warych with the Green Bay Police Department said, "These thefts occur so quickly that it's hard to get a suspect description if you don't have a home surveillance system."

Warych also said it's a good to get to know your neighbors and help each other out.

Roger Allen says they do just that.

"It's been a really good neighborhood; we have a lot of elderly that do watch out and a lot of elderly walking."

Between Thanksgiving and New Year's, the postal service expects to deliver 850 million packages nationwide, which is up more than 10 percent compared to last year.

The Better Business Bureau regional director, Susan Bach, suggested leaving your packages on the side or back doors but never in the front.

"I know FedEX and UPS, they do have apps available that you can reroute or reschedule a delivery, so that might be an option."

Among the millions of deliveries, Bach said it's important to keep something in mind.

"If the package is stolen off of your front door, it is not the delivery company's responsibility or the merchant's responsibility to replace it. It's yours."

According to the National Retail Federation more than 122 million people planned to shop online on Cyber Monday.

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - There was a lot to celebrate Monday for the Greater Oshkosh Economic Development Corporation.

CEO Jason White tells FOX 11...

"Oshkosh Corporation just made their big announcement of their intent to build a $50 million, world class headquarters here in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, said CEO Jason White.

GO EDC held a report to the community about the work it does to help grow the area economy and the Oshkosh Corporation news was an exciting talking point for city and economic leaders.

"Millions of dollars of charitable causes to our community, a $150 million dollar supply chain in our community and hundreds, if not thousands, of jobs in our community would have been impacted if they had chosen to leave."

"An influx of new talent into our community, into our economy, which I think is gonna be great for us in the long run," added Oshkosh City Manager Mark Rohloff.

Oshkosh Corporation will buy 35 acres of the city-owned Lakeshore Golf Course for its new global headquarters for $3.5 million.

Rohloff says the city will spend about $7 million on infrastructure improvements in the area and give the company $6 million in tax breaks over 12 years.

"That is, pretty much, what the market calls for these days. So I think what we did was something that was very competitive with the market."

Some members of the community did not want the city to sell golf course land. They had concerns about what will happen to the other, roughly 70 acres of the course now.

Rohloff says those concerns are going to be addressed.

"I think over the next few months you're gonna see the parks board provide some input to the city council in terms of what they would like to see. The possibility of a nine hole golf course is certainly being discussed."

"While we might have been losing something on the one hand, we were gaining so much more as a community, as a whole," added White.

Construction on the new headquarters is slated to start this spring. The facility is supposed to be finished by the end of 2019.

MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) -

Steven's Avery's motions to reconsider an earlier decision that denied him a new trial, has once again been rejected by a judge.

Avery is seeking a new trial for the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach, and is currently serving life in prison.

Statements in the Judge Angela Sutkiewicz's ruling indicate that the court finds no basis to reverse its October 3rd decision of denying Avery a new trial.

Several motions have been filed by Avery's attorney since then.

Tuesday's ruling also indicated that  the Motion to Reconsider is not the appropriate forum for the court, and should have been in Avery's first motion.
