Road Warriors Pay Attention: Surviving A Winter Storm

Green Bay, WI (WTAQ) - As northeast Wisconsin deals with the latest offering of winter weather....police are also offering tips to help you stay safe if you're on the road.

"it's going to be the storm of the year so far...we want people to use good judgement"

Green Bay Police Lt Brad Strouf says if you have to travel....be smart. Slow down, give yourself extra space from the vehicle in front of you.

"4-wheel drive might be able to drive you through snow, but it doesn't help your stopping distance when you're on snow or ice"

Take your time, give yourself extra time to get to where you're going. And keep your gas tank full. Watch for the snow-plows too, give them the right of way.

Strouf also says make sure your vehicle is stocked with snacks, blankets and a charged cell phone. That could be a life saver if you wind up off the road.

"what we find is that the safest place for you is right inside your vehicle. you're going to conserve body heat"

Another reason to stay in your vehicle.....In the dark or blowing snow, it will be difficult for other drivers to see you. Use your cell phone to call 9-1-1 and wait for help.

Town Of Wilson, WI (WTAQ) - Hundreds took time Monday to take part in the visitation and memorial service for the three children who died from injuries sustained during last week’s house fire in Sheboygan Falls.

Crossroads Community Church led events, the home church for the Maki family. Lead Pastor Jeff Jaeger says the events have rocked church members, but they have stepped up to rally around the family.

"realizing that we have a role to play as they continue to move forward in the days and months ahead....which is going to involve a long road to healing"

Jaeger said the memorial service would be a key point in the healing process for the family and community.

"we'll celebrate some key themes that really come out loud and clear from each of these children's lives that warrant celebrating"

Jaeger adds the entire community has also gone beyond his expectations to help the Maki family, and work will begin later this week to connect people and resources to help with future needs.

A Go Fund Me page has seen over 130-thousand dollars raised in the past six days, and fundraisers are being set up at area businesses. Jaeger says he is floored by the help being offered from the local community and beyond.

Winnebago Co. Exec says Fitzgerald Bill Targets Him

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The Wisconsin Senate's majority leader wants to prohibit county executives from serving in the state Legislature at the same time.

Republican Scott Fitzgerald is seeking co-sponsors for a bill to that effect.

Winnebago County Executive Mark Harris is running this fall for a Senate seat that's being vacated by Fond du Lac Republican Rick Gudex -- and Harris, a Democrat, says the bill is aimed directly at him.

Fitzgerald says it's wrong for someone making $100,000 a year as a county executive from double-dipping with a $50,000 legislative salary.

But Harris says Fitzgerald stayed silent when his fellow Republican Paul Farrow held his Senate seat for a short time after becoming the Waukesha County executive -- and former Assembly Democrat Bob Ziegelbauer kept that post for a time after being elected the Manitowoc County executive.

As The White Stuff Falls, Some Local Businesses See Nothing But Green

Bellevue, WI (WTAQ) - Snow storms bring a smile to the faces of those private plow operators you see clearing business parking lots and driveways.

Scott Martens, with Martens Trucking & Lawn Care in Bellevue, doesn't get too excited over these snow events.

But he does say the expected wet, heavy snow does take a toll on his fleet of plows.

"harder on the equipment, harder on the transmissions, harder on the hydraulics.....but that's what they're built for"

His crew of 10 won't wait until the snow stops either. They're prepared to start pushing the flakes at the shopping centers, commercial businesses and restaurants on their list as they begin falling.

"on a regular snowfall we can finish everything in 5 to 6 hours"

But this may not be normal. But, for this event Martens says they'll keep going back to their customers as many times as it takes to keep the snow plowed until the storm passes.

Green Bay Beer Batterer Charged with Domestic Violence

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A Green Bay man is facing three charges in connection with a domestic abuse incident involving his new wife and her son.

39-year-old Adam C. Ottone is charged with substantial battery, domestic abuse-infliction physical pain or injury, disorderly conduct and bail jumping. All counts are as a repeater.

According to the criminal complaint, Green Bay police were called to the Blackstone restaurant at N. Ashland Ave. and Shawano Ave. early on the morning of January 24.

The alleged victim was refusing to see rescue for her injuries, which was the result of a physical attack from her husband of two weeks.

The woman told police that around 2 a.m., Ottone woke her up by, "pouring beer onto her and her son." She said that they're living with two boys, ages 5 and 7, according to the complaint.

She told police that she immediately jumped out of bed and began to push Ottone out of the room where the kids where and into a second bedroom when, "he began to physically assault her, swinging at her on several occasions with both open and closed hand."

The complaint states that the victim reported, "Ottone punched her in the eye with a closed fist resulting in visible bruising underneath her right eye. She also stated that she had hearing loss in her right ear because of injuries sustained from the fight with Ottone."

When asked by officers if she needed rescue, she replied "No." Eventually, the officer convinced her to go to the hospital because damage to her ear could be something more serious.

During an interview at the hospital, the woman said it began around 6:30 p.m. the day before, when Ottone came home from work and saw that she was drinking with a friend. She said, "Throughout the course of the night Ottone was continuously engaging her in argumentative conversation because she was drinking with that friend."

The complaint states that the victim was sitting in a rocking chair around midnight, when Ottone jumped onto her lap, "and wrapped both arms around her neck and began to strangle her."

The woman refused to answer when a cop asked if she had lost consciousness at any point. She would only say that she pushed Ottone off of her and told him to, "Go away and at which time he raised his hand and struck her on the right side of her head with an open hand several times causing damage to her eardrum."

Officers asked her why she didn't call police at that point, and she said she," just wanted to get Ottone some time to calm down and she was not in fear."

According to the complaint, police arrived at the couple's home and was met with the female friend drinking with the victim. That woman allowed police inside the home and directed officers to a bedroom where Ottone was. "Officer knocked on the third bedroom door and heard a loud scream from inside at which time he backed up from the door and asked the friend if she would come up and talk to Ottone and see if he would come out of the room."

Ottone opened the door and was only in his boxer shorts. The officer then asked Ottone what had happened, and told the same story the victim gave. Ottone said, "That he came home from work and was upset that the woman and his wife had been drinking. He stated that they did get into a physical altercation and that he did hit his wife on several occasions."

Ottone was handcuffed and arrested. The complaint goes on to state that on the way to the Brown County Jail, Ottone became belligerent, "continuing to yell and scream at the officer while he was on the phone with Probation and Parole. Ottone also used several racial slurs towards the officer."

Ottone was charged with felony Escape back on November 25, 2015, and had his cash bond set at $750 with the following conditions: make all future court appearances and commit no further law violations. This new arrest on these charges constitutes a violation of his bond.

Ottone is due back in court Thursday for his preliminary hearing. If convicted of all of these charges, Ottone faces up to more than 13 years in prison.

Brillion, WI (WTAQ) - After Ariens was thrust into the national spotlight last month, CEO Dan Ariens, said work at the Brillion manufacturing plant is returning to normal.

"The original story said we terminated them and we forced them not to prayer, which was not the case"

Last month about 53 Muslim employees left work when the company said it was going to start enforcing it's onsite prayer policy.

Ariens said those employees were taking unscheduled break to prayer which disrupted the production line.

"A lot of our Muslim employees have figured out how to prayer within our break times"

Since enforcing the policy 32 Muslim employees have returned to work but the company said it did have to terminate seven others.

"They continued to take a prayer off their normal break time. We've tried to work with them, we've given them several warnings, and talked to them every time about why this doesn't work, and it just came to a termination for those seven,"said Ariens.

Jaylani Hussein is the Executive Director of the Minneapolis-based Council on American Islamic Relations, and says his organizartion has been working with several of the employees that left Ariens.

"We are still looking at all of our legal actions"

He added more needs to be done so a situation like this doesn't happen again.

"The company needs to look at all the reasonable options and right now they have come up with nothing, even though these employees tried to offered a number of ways to accommodate"

Ariens says the entire ordeal has been a learning experience and the company is just looking to get back on track.

Keeping Kids Fresh During February's Children's Dental Health Month

$

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - February is Children's Dental Health Month -- and a Wisconsin-based dental practice is looking to highlight the importance of dental health in our kids.

Dental Associates will visit 24 schools in the Green Bay area to teach 3,500 children about the importance of dental health. During the visits, each child gets a dental kit that includes a new toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss and dental care information for parents.

"We've done the student education initiative for many years so it's engrained in our company culture and something we look forward to every February," said Dr. Jennifer Stevens, a board-certified pediatric dentist at Dental Associates' Green Bay clinic in a statement. "We enjoy working with children and giving them the supplies and information they need to properly take care of their teeth. We're committed to helping the community in every way we can."

Overall, Dental Associates says they will make over 100 school visits statewide to reach more than 14,000 children.

At these school presentations, dental assistants will show kids the keys to oral health including brushing twice a day for at least 2 minutes, flossing and seeing a dentist for regular checkups. They also address the importance of a healthy diet and encourage children to avoid sugary snacks and sweet drinks like juice and soda since those products coat teeth with sugar.

TOP CHRONIC CHILDHOOD ILLNESS

According to the National Children's Oral Health Foundation, pediatric dental disease, also known as tooth decay, is the number 1 chronic childhood illness.

A recent report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also finds that early childhood caries (ECC), a rapid form of tooth decay, is on the rise. By age 5, about 60 percent of U.S. children will have had ECC.

Tooth decay is also five times more common in children than asthma, and an estimated 17 million kids in the U.S. go without dental care each year.

"Research continues to show the importance of early pediatric dental care for children," says Stevens. "That's why we're so passionate about spreading the message that children's teeth need dental care even before they turn one-year-old. Early attention and intervention can help avert a host of problems."

The problems associated with poor oral health go beyond the impacts on teeth and gums. Since a cavity is an infection of the tooth, it makes children more vulnerable to ear and sinus infections.

Other negative health effects for kids include difficulty chewing, decreased appetite, insufficient growth, poor speech, reluctance to speak and smile, poor sleep habits, poor concentration, low self-esteem and social ostracism. In addition, if baby teeth come out too early, the permanent teeth may erupt out of position, which can lead to crooked and twisted teeth along with intensive orthodontic treatment needed later on.

According to the American Journal of Public Health, children with dental problems are more likely to miss school and have problems at school and are less likely to complete all required homework. A report from the Office of the Surgeon General says that over 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related conditions.

RECOMMENDED KIDS DENTAL HEALTH REGIMEN

Dental Associates lists the following tips to help improve the oral health of children:

  • Familiarize babies with dental care by cleaning their gums gently with a soft infant toothbrush or wet wash cloth.
  • Avoid putting children to bed with a bottle of milk or juice
  • Give young children, even those without teeth, a soft bristle toothbrush so they can copy mom or dad. Replace it every 3 months.
  • Schedule a dental visit shortly after the child's first tooth appears or no later than his/her 1st birthday. Continue with regular dental checkups every 6 months.
  • Use fluoride-free toothpaste (also known as training toothpaste) for children less than 2 years old. For children between 2 and 5, apply just a smear of fluoride toothpaste. Teach children to spit out any extra toothpaste.
  • A pediatric dentist may apply a fluoride treatment, depending on the amount of fluoride in the local drinking water.
  • To protect molar teeth from decay, a dental sealant may be applied to fill in the crevices of teeth and protect them for years.
  • Children (and adults) should avoid frequent snacking on sugary or starchy items and avoid drinking an excessive amount of soda and other sugary beverages.
  • Follow the 2-2-2 dental health guide: brush and floss twice a day for 2 minutes and see the dentist twice a year for checkups.
  • To help young ones keep brushing for 2 minutes, Dental Associates created "Heroes of Hygiene," a free app for Apple and Android devices where 4 different super heroes come to life to make brushing fun and entertaining.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A Brown County non-profit organization needs your help finding a home.

Heaven's Touch, Inc., which helps single pregnant/parenting women and their children to rebound from trials and trauma that have negatively impacted their lives, was forced out of a building last April.

"We lost our 10,000 square foot building because the owner could not use our $60,000 donation receipt," said Founder, President and CEO Cindy Guevara. "So we are looking for a building, 40,000 square feet or more, in which to put everything into one location to help us operate more effectively."

Guevara currently works out of her home, with the contents being moved into three 53-foot semi-trailers, a 4,000 square foot warehouse, 13 storage units and 54 pallets of product at RGL Holding.

"We will need approximately five offices or the ability to put walls up to make five offices, the rest of the space can be open," said Guevara. "We are also looking to purchase our own building, which would be nice, and we are looking for finances to support us and to continue our ongoing program."

Guevara says Heaven's Touch, Inc. has helped over 7,000 women in Brown County to get back on their feet and lead productive lives.

"Our goal is to get them off the system, help them become self-sufficient and be a productive asset to the community," Guevara said. "Our four objectives are housing, education, parenting and employment."

Heaven's Touch also assists women with household items, furniture, clothing, a food pantry, hygiene products, and gas cards and back to school supplies. The group also offers financial planning and budgeting, cooking classes and an incentive educational program.

Guevara says that they not only help these women, but in turn, help their children.

"They're showing their children, because more is caught than taught, that they are being productive and being good role models," Guevara said. "Because their children will follow in their footsteps."

You can learn more about Heaven's Touch here.

If you'd like to help out Heaven's Touch, you can do so by contacting Guevara at (920) 713-4069 or e-mail her at heavenstouchmin@tds.net.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A Keshena woman who admitted stealing electronics and DVDs is facing multiple charges in Brown County.

27-year-old Dawn Haney is charged with two counts of theft of moveable property, driving or operating a motor vehicle without consent, obstructing an officer and two counts of bail jumping.

According to the criminal complaint, a Green Bay man call police on January 28 to report a possible burglary and auto theft. The victim to an officer that Haney was staying at his apartment for couple days. But when he arrived home from work, items were missing from the apartment and the vehicle was gone.

Among the items stolen were an Xbox 360, some Xbox games, about 75 DVDs, a cigarette roller and a bag of tobacco.

The complaint states that the victim said, "A friend hooked the two of them up and he drove to Keshena to pick up Dawn on New Year's Eve. They had started a relationship and she had been living in his apartment since then." The man said that Haney doesn't have a cell phone, and was unsure where she was going since he thought she was homeless.

Then two days later, the complaint states that a vehicle was pulled over by police after trying to speed away from the cops. There was a driver and two passengers inside. The officer ran the license plate of the vehicle and it came back stolen.

One of the passengers inside identified herself as Sabrina M. Draxler. However the complaint states, "She initially spelled her last name Darxler. The female then spelled it Dralxer. The female finally spelled her last name Draxler."

The spelling errors, along with a Brown County Jail mugshots search, it was clear the girl was not telling the truth. She then identified herself as Dawn Laverne Marie Haney, who had two warrants out of Shawano County.

According to the complaint, Haney said she had been living at the apartment with the victim for about a month. She told police that on January 28, "I left him at work and went to a couple doctor's appointments scheduled that day. She stated after the appointments she went over to an unknown address," to speak with two men.

She claims both men, after talking about her living situation, talked her into going back to the apartment and take some items. Haney goes on to say she stole the electronic items and sold them at two different stores. She then parked the vehicle at an unknown address on Cherry Street, "because she was afraid to drive around in the vehicle."

She said a friend of hers agreed to drive the vehicle from Cherry Street allegedly to drop it off on Ashland Avenue. However, the complaint states that she never thought the vehicle was listed as stolen.

According to the complaint, an officer asked Dawn why she did this and she, "stated that she was stupid." Haney admitted to knowing she was in a lot of trouble, but didn't think that the victim would report his vehicle as stolen.

Some of the stolen items have been returned to the victim.

Haney is due back in Brown County court for a preliminary hearing February 9. If convicted of all charges, Haney faces over 15 years in prison.
