GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting on Green Bay’s west side.

It happened Tuesday night on Plymouth Lane, which is off of South Fisk Street.

Green Bay Police showed up to a west side apartment at 7:30 p.m. to check on a man who was possibly suicidal.

“When the officers encountered that male, upon their response, that male produced an edged weapon, stabbed one of the officers in the arm,” said Captain Jeremy Muraski of the Green Bay Police Department.

Muraski says the wounded officer, as well as his partner shot at the man, killing him.

The officer who was stabbed is expected to make a full recovery.

With the incident being an officer-related death, the state Department of Criminal Investigation is now handling the case.

“We are working with them, whatever assistance they request of us we will provide to them, but they are the primary investigators of this,” said Muraski.

Police did have any details about the man that was killed.

They say the investigation is just beginning and will take some time.

Muraski did not know whether the officers had ever previously been involved with an officer-involved shooting. The department has not released their names yet either.

NFLPA speaks out against right-to-work bill

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - If you're in a union or a working family, at least one group of highly paid athletes feels your pain.

The National Football League Players' Association came out Tuesday against Wisconsin's right-to-work bill.

Union director DeMaurice Smith says his group "stands together" with Wisconsin's working families and organized labor in what he called "current attacks against their right to stand together as a team."

The right-to-work bill would ban employers from forcing workers to either join unions or pay union dues.

Smith said the bill would jeopardize the livelihoods of food and commercial workers at Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers. The NFL players' chief said, "Governor Scott Walker may not value these vital employees -- but as union members, we do."

Smith said football players know first hand how banding together can "overcome decades of poor workplace conditions, and drastically improve pensions and benefits."

A state Senate committee endorsed the right-to-work bill Tuesday evening. The full Senate takes it up Wednesday.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The investigation is underway after an officer-involved fatal shooting of a Green Bay man Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, the Green Bay Police Department released more information about the incident that led up to the death of 30-year-old Joseph Biegert.

The officers involved were a 28-year-old man with 5 years' experience on the force and a 24-year-old man who's been with the department for 2 years.

The call came in around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for officers to check on Biegert, who had allegedly taken medication in an attempt to harm himself. Upon arrival, investigators say Biegert attacked one of the officers, stabbing him in the upper arm with a knife. The cops then shot Biegert in attempt to stop the threat.

Biegert died at the scene, in the 1500 block of Plymouth Lane.

The officers involved were taken to the hospital, where they were treated and released.

The Green Bay Police Department has placed officers to administrative duty while the incident is investigated.

Following state law, the state Division of Criminal Investigation is now looking into the incident.

A spokesperson with the Wisconsin Department of Justice on Wednesday would not comment beyond what the Green Bay Police Department put out in a release.

Wausaukee mother will stand trial on child neglect charges

MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ) - A woman facing charges of child neglect for ignoring medical treatment for her infant has waived her preliminary hearing.

Online court records indicate that Katrina Blasing of Wausaukee will stand trial. She will be arraigned in Marinette County court March 5.

Blasing's 4-month-old son suffered extensive injuries while in the care of Ryan Lenz. Lenz is also charged with child neglect, and will be in court March 10 for his preliminary hearing.

However, neither Blasing, Lenz nor anyone else is charged with actually causing the abuse.

Blasing left the child with a friend in the Town of Stephenson while she went with a friend and the friend's grandmother to Milwaukee, according to the criminal complaint.

At the time, Lenz was at the house and watching the child. He noticed the baby was injured and called Blasing, who told him to wait until she returned. Prosecutors say Lenz cared for the baby and called Blasing several times to ask if the child should be taken to the hospital. The complaint states that each time, Blasing said to wait until she got back.

Several hours after Lenz first noticed the injuries, Blasing called 911 for medical help. It remains unknown who actually abused the baby.

The complaint goes on to reveal that doctors found the child had severe injuries including fractures to his skull and other parts of his body, brain injuries and bite marks. Doctors said some of the injuries were fresh, but some were old.

Doctors also said the injuries were unlikely to be caused by normal household accidents; they more likely resulted from the baby being slammed, shaken or thrown.

Neenah Walmart worker mentally responsible for shooting, jury finds

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - A jury in eastern Wisconsin has ruled that a woman knew what she was doing, when she shot and wounded a Walmart co-worker in 2013.

48-year-old Justine Boyd of Neenah had pleaded no contest to attempted homicide. But she sought mental treatment instead of prison, claiming she was insane when she shot Sharon Goffard in the store's liquor department.

At her sanity trial, two doctors testified that Boyd suffered from severe paranoid delusions. Her attorney told jurors that her paranoia prevented her to stop what she was doing.

A Winnebago County prosecutor said the store's video showed that Boyd's actions were deliberate -- and that she knew the shooting was wrong.

Jurors deliberated for four-and-a-half hours before ruling that she may have been mentally ill at the time, but she knew her actions were wrong.

Boyd faces prison time when she's sentenced on April 23rd.

Appeals court orders new trial for New London man in '07 murder

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A state appeals court has ordered a new trial for a New London man convicted of stabbing an elderly man to death.

Chad Magolski, who's now 38, is serving a life prison term for the slaying of 77-year-old James Park in the apartment building they shared in late 2007.

The Fourth District Court of Appeals in Madison ruled Thursday that the trial judge was wrong to admit evidence from a previous burglary conviction against Magolski.

The judges said the break-in and the stabbing were not similar enough to justify introducing the evidence. As a result, the appellate judges reversed Magolski's conviction for first-degree intentional homicide from 2012, and ordered a new trial.

Prosecutors said the murder was committed during a robbery -- and Magolski may have used some of the stolen cash to pay overdue utility bills and rent. Investigators said the victim's pants' pockets were apparently searched, and Park's money clip was missing.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Cheeseheads will share in Brett Favre's Hall of Fame moment after all.

The Packers announced Friday that his July 18th induction ceremony into the team's Hall of Fame will be shown on the video boards at Lambeau Field -- and Favre will make an appearance in the stadium bowl to address the crowd.

Each year, a banquet is held in the stadium's atrium, where new members of the Packer Hall are inducted. This year, the invited guests -- like sponsors and former players -- snapped up all 1,600 tickets, which upset a number of fans and Packer stockholders who wanted to be there.

Even Favre himself was bummed, telling a national reporter the stadium should be open for those wanting to attend. The Packers say they'll do just that.

$4 tickets will go on sale May 12th through Ticketmaster, with a limit of 8 per order. Proceeds will go to the "Favre 4 Hope" charity.

Favre, a three-time MVP quarterback with the Packers, will have his Number 4 retired on the night of the banquet. Another number retirement ceremony will take place during a home game this fall.

Bond set for suspect in the 2012 murder of Thomas Wick

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Authorities in Brown County have arrested a man suspected of killing Thomas Wick back in 2012.

On Thursday night, investigators with the Brown County Sheriff's Department arrested 30-year-old Matthew Moore. Moore made his first court appearance Friday afternoon, where a judge found probable cause to hold him on a $500,000 cash bond. He has yet to be formally charged in the case.

During that court appearance, prosecutors say that Moore had money problems and owed Thomas Wick a $5,000 house loan payment. The money was apparently due the day after the murder.

Moore is also suspected of stealing the apparent murder weapon from a co-worker.

According to FOX 11, prosecutors said Moore made comments to police that included information that was never released publicly, like the fact Wick was shot in the head. They added that Moore’s handwriting appears to match gang signs found in Wick’s home.

Also making an appearance in court Friday was Moore's fiancée Katie Heller. Heller is accused of lying to investigators about the case. Her bail was set at $50,000 cash.

On this day in 2012, Thomas Wick was found dead inside the basement of his Howard home.

Investigators say a friend arrived that morning to help Wick remodel his basement and that’s when he found Wick lying on the floor. Police believe Wick had been lying there for several hours.

Wick owned Bayside Electric, a residential and commercial electrical company.

Both Moore and Heller are expected back in court next week to face formal charges.
