“The foot traffic at the Forestville branch has significantly declined because of the successful opening of the Sturgeon Bay branch last year and the continued shift of our customers to online banking, direct deposit and ATMs," says Slatky. Site plans submitted by Meijer for Howard location

HOWARD, WI (WTAQ) - A Michigan-based retailer and grocer has formally filed site plans for a supercenter in the village of Howard.

The proposed site is east of Highway 41 and south of Shawano Avenue, across from Mills Fleet Farm.

“They have this land under control and preliminarily this looks very good, so I’m assuming unless there is so big change on their end, from our standpoint this is pretty close to done,” Howard Village Administrator Paul Evert told FOX 11.

Plans call for a 195,000-square-foot store with a gas station on the property that has been idle for the past 6 years.

“It’s great for the whole area because it means jobs it means 150 to 200 part-time and full-time jobs for the area,” Evert said, adding that the proposed development could add as much as $14 million in new tax base for the village.

As part of the Meijer plan, the village would extend Badgerland Drive under Highway 41 all the way to Taylor Street for better traffic flow and access to the store.

A public hearing is scheduled for later this month on preliminary zoning approval. Then plans will go to the full board. Evert says if Meijer gets the go ahead, work would begin at the site this year.

“Demolishing structures, then in 2016 they hope to break ground, and open in ’17,” Evert said.

Appleton Common Council approves land buy for expo center

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - The Appleton Common Council has approved purchasing land for the proposed Fox Cities Exhibition Center.

On Wednesday night, council members voted 10-4 to spend $2 million on land that is currently a parking lot on Lawrence Street behind the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel.

It's a reversal from two months ago, when council members voted against buying the land. Supporters of the expo center project say they feel vindicated.

“It’s really just the one thing, I think, Appleton is missing to go along with what we already, what we have to compliment it with one mile of entertainment district. It’s like the city’s personal investment in trying to drive economic development downtown,” Alderman Curt Konetzke told FOX 11.

This is just the first step in the process. Under the purchase agreement, there are several conditions.  Plans for the center call for the city to own it, while the Radisson Paper Valley would manage it.

“We have meetings set up with the hotel owners to negotiate that management agreement and then we have a lot of work to do with our neighbors,” explained Mayor Tim Hanna who told FOX 11 that work includes getting nine Fox Cities communities to raise their room tax rates to help pay for the $27 million exhibition center.

But not everyone is convinced this is a good idea.

“I think there’s a lot of risks there that we simply cannot to anything to completely negate. I think there’s a lot of challenges possible. You know, even successful exhibition centers operate at a deficit most years and I think we’re putting taxpayers at risk for having to foot the bill for that,” said Alderman Kyle Lobner.

The city would also need to secure bond financing to help pay for the proposed exhibition center.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Prosecutors in Brown County asked for a one-week delay in filing formal charges against the man accused of murdering Thomas Wick in 2012.

In court Friday, prosecutors said they just received new information and needed another week to prepare charges.

Last week, a court commissioner set bond for 30-year-old Matthew Moore of Allouez at $500,000. Prosecutors say Moore killed Wick because he owed Wick money.

Moore's now-fiancée, Katie Heller, was arrested last week for perjury. Prosecutors believe she may face more severe charges in connection with the 2012 homicide in Howard. Her bail was set at $50,000.

FOX 11 reports that at last week's bond hearing, Assistant District Attorney Wendy Lemkuil told the court Moore and Heller knew things about the case that weren’t made public, like the fact Wick was shot in the head.

On February 27, 2012, Thomas Wick was found shot to death in the basement of his home at 240 Hidden Creek Trail.

According to investigators, a friend showed up that morning to help Wick remodel his basement and that's when he found Wick lying on the floor. Police say they believe Wick had been lying there for several hours.

Wick was the owner of residential and commercial electrical company Bayside Electric.

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - The Appvion paper company of Appleton reports a $40 million operating loss for last year, after it made $133 million the previous year.

Appvion is the former Appleton Papers. It blamed the 2014 losses in part on the settlement of a long-time dispute over who should pay to clean up harmful PCB's from the Fox River. It generated a one-time charge of $24 million.

Appvion also cited poor manufacturing performance, mainly during the first half of last year, plus what it called "unfavorable product mix and pricing." That was especially true for the thermal papers for receipts and labels which have fallen in demand due to digital products.

Appvion also said changes in pension and retirement benefits caused some of the losses.

In the meantime, the employee-owned company has grown its business to produce coatings for other specialty papers.
