Retail experts expect Saturday to be busiest shopping day of the year

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - If you go shopping tomorrow, you'll have lots of company.

Retail watchers expect the Saturday before Christmas to replace Black Friday as the busiest shopping day of the year.

For one thing, much of Black Friday's sales now take place on Thanksgiving night. Also, gas prices are down 30 percent from Labor Day -- which puts at least a few more bucks into the pockets of Wisconsin shoppers.

The economy has also attracted more consumer confidence. Because of all that, Kohl's Department Stores -- based in Menomonee Falls -- plans to have its retail stores open 24 hours a day from now until Christmas Eve.

Spokeswoman Ale Owens says Kohl's will trickle out a host of bargains through the period.

Jerry O'Brien of UW-Madison says lots of shoppers will look for markdowns -- but they're taking a chance on whether their favorite items are still in stock.

O'Brien, who heads the UW Center for Retailing Excellence, says retailers have done a better job of gauging their supplies to shoppers' demands. But those products with large inventories are more likely to be marked down now instead of after Christmas.

ABRAMS, WI (WTAQ) - An overnight house fire forced one man out in the cold in Abrams.

Fire crews say it began before midnight Thursday at a mobile home on N. Gilbert Lane. Officials say the blaze started in a detached garage and then spread to the home.

The homeowner was inside at the time and was able to escape safely.

Fire departments from several area communities were called in to help. They got the fire under control in less than an hour.

Abrams Fire Chief Rick Race says one wall of the home is gone. He says a quarter of the home has fire damage, and the rest has smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Red Cross is helping the homeowner.

Gas prices not expected to drop much lower

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Many traveling for the holidays have a little more green in their wallet thanks to a considerate decline in gas prices.

Patrick DeHaan with Gasbuddy.com says our most dramatic price drop is likely in the past.

DeHaan says prices may drop but probably not a whole lot more and not at the rate we've seen in the recent past.

He says Wisconsin residents shouldn't expect the average price of gas to go below $2.00 a gallon.

On this date last year prices stood at $3.11 a gallon and Friday we're at $2.44 which is .67 cent drop.

The average price of gas in Wisconsin as of Friday is $2.45 a gallon. The lowest price in the state is in Kenosha at $2.09.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Lambeau Field played host to a special celebration today, as family, friends, fans and the Packers organization said goodbye to Fred "Fuzzy" Thurston.

Thurston passed away earlier this week at the age of 80 after battling health issues for the last several years.

A visitation at Lambeau Field began at 11 a.m. Friday, with a ceremony to celebrate Thurston’s life to follow around 3 p.m.

Thurston's niece, Tracy Herron, said it was the perfect sendoff for her uncle.

"He loved people, he loved the fans, the Packers were in his heart," said Herron. "He was just a warm, kind person...always positive, always happy. Anyone he would meet would be greeted with a big hug and kiss, whether he knew them or had never met them."

Gary Richards and his girlfriend Chris Kennedy drove in from Iron River, Michigan. Thurston was godfather to Richards' youngest daughter. He agreed with the public celebration.

"I think he would be very, very honored," said Richards. "Fuzzy, he bled green and gold all the way."

Thurston played left guard, during the Vince Lombardi era, helping the team and its legendary power sweep offense to five NFL championships. Thurston retired in 1967 and was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 1975.

KESHENA, WI (WTAQ) - The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has reopened Highway 47/55 in Keshena Friday.

The road was closed to traffic on Tuesday, after it was covered by floodwaters from the Wolf River.

Ice jams on the river have caused flooding for over a week -- and colder temps this week may create more ice.

The Menominee Indian tribe is about to install barriers to replace sandbags, as they try and keep more flooding to a minimum on the Wolf River.

The tribe is working with state and federal agencies on placing the barriers, after consulting with engineering experts to shape them correctly.

BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - A truck driver was hurt and thousands of gallons of manure spilled following a tanker crash in Brown County Saturday.

Authorities were called about a rollover crash at the intersection of Highway 32 and Kunesh Road around 10 a.m.

“When we got here, it was the manure truck from Green Valley Farms, that rolled over and pretty much deposited the whole load of liquid manure, on the side of the road,” Pulaski Tri-County Fire Chief Randy Wichlacz told FOX 11.

According to Wichlacz, the driver was trapped in the vehicle. The Eagle III rescue transport helicopter was called in to help.

“And the driver was pinned in the cab of the truck,” said Wichlacz. “And we had to extricate him and loaded him up and Eagle III took him to the hospital in Green Bay.”

Authorities say the truck was turning east onto Kunesh Road, when the manure shifted inside the tank, causing it to roll over.

About 4,000 gallons of manure spilled out of the truck. Police say the driver suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The DNR says it doesn’t anticipate significant environmental damage, despite the spill happening near a western branch of the Suamico River.

No charges in Milwaukee cop shooting

MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) - Milwaukee's top prosecutor said Monday morning he will not file criminal charges against a white former police officer who shot a mentally ill black man to death in April.

After a nearly 8 month investigation, DA John Chisholm said ex-Milwaukee officer Christopher Manney acted in self defense when he shot Dontre Hamilton 14 times -- and Manney's defense "cannot be reasonably overcome to establish a basis to charge" the officer with a crime.

In a news release, Chisholm said it was a "tragic incident" for the Hamilton family and the community.

Supporters of Hamilton's family, including the Coalition for Justice, were gathering Monday morning at Red Arrow Park. That's where Manney shot the 31-year-old Hamilton during a scuffle on April 30th, after the officer had frisked the man from behind.

Coalition member Curtis Sails told the Journal Sentinel just before the DA's decision that he hoped America, in his words, "does the right thing this time -- because it seems like in other cases, they've gotten it wrong."

Hamilton's family urged peaceful protests, after the violence from the white on black police shooting in Ferguson Missouri.

Reports said Hamilton fought the officer once the frisking began. Manney tried using his baton to subdue Hamilton -- but Hamilton seized control of the baton, swung it at the officer, and hit his neck. That's when Manney started shooting.

Reports indicated that Manney had no idea that two officers previously checked on Hamilton the same afternoon in the park, and found he was doing nothing wrong. His family said Hamilton was treated for schizophrenia, and was not a violent person.

Police Chief Ed Flynn fired officer Manney in October for violating police procedures in approaching from behind. Manney is appealing his termination, and the police union gave Flynn a vote of no confidence for what they called a political firing.

The original report was that 7 had minor injuries. Authorities said nobody was directly hit by the lightning -- but the shock caused a number of people to fall, as rocks were kicked up.

A northwest Wisconsin woman who drove down for the game had the roof of her car damaged by lightning. Terry Halvorson of Somerset told a local TV reporter she planned to drive up to Minnesota Monday for Christmas -- but that won't happen now.

One of the injured spectators was hospitalized in critical condition at last word.

Milwaukee Alderman react to Dontre Hamilton shooting

Milwaukee, WI (WTAQ) - Five of Milwaukee's 16 aldermen say they'll push for police reforms, in the wake of D-A John Chisholm's decision not to file charges in the police shooting death of Dontre Hamilton.

The 5 say they support the Hamilton family as they seek justice.

They said their reforms would ensure that every life is protected by Milwaukee Police.

The aldermen want a new advisory council on community-police relations. They also want a possible new contractor to provide diversity training to officers -- body cameras for all police officers, instead of just the 50 in next year's budget -- an expansion of the city's Fire-and-Police Commission from seven members to nine.

And an early warning system which monitors officers for indications of violent and aggressive tendencies.
