OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - Super-sized sturgeon are being taken from Lake Winnebago, as the annual spearing season winds down after just one weekend.
Don Feldner caught the heaviest fish on Saturday and Sunday, a 75-inch sturgeon near Fond du Lac weighing 148 pounds. However, spearers caught even heavier fish Monday.
The DNR's Web site had photos of two sturgeon weighing in at more than 150 pounds. Both were at least six-feet long, like Feldner's big catch.
Spearers were so successful during the season's first weekend, the upriver lakes connected to Lake Winnebago were closing their season at 1 p.m. Monday.
The spearing on Lake Winnebago was expected to be wrapped up later this week, as the spearers reach their total limits for the year. DNR experts said the cold winter has resulted in the clearest water in at least four years -- thus making it easier for the spearers to search for their big catches.
