ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) - There's a new player on the scene when it comes to offering a destination for performing arts of all kinds.

The new Ashwaubenon Performing Arts Center announcing its inaugural series.

It will include ten events, ranging from local talent to national and international touring productions.

"This is the first thing that we wanted to get in place here. A structured performing arts series."

Kate Green is the Ashwaubenon PAC manager. Performances will begin next month and run through June of 2018. Green knows there are other venues that offer touring shows and concerts.

Green's goal isn't necessarily to compete against them.

"Make sure that we are augmenting the entertainment scene in the area....rather than butting up against anything else that's going on."

Green says they expect to learn quite a bit this first year, and make changes in following years based on that.

"Really this first year is going to be one that speaks back to us and lets us know what our audiences want to see. Do they want more, do they want less ? What are they looking for ?"

The Performing Arts Center is connected to Ashwaubenon High School.

Some of the programs in the upcoming series will offer learning opportunities for students.

A list of shows in the series, details about them, and ticket options for the season, can be found here

DENVER, CO, (WTAQ) - The Green Bay Packers jumped out to an early 10-0 lead but couldn't hold it in falling to the Denver Broncos 20-17 on a warm night at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium Saturday night.

Aaron Rodgers was on the field for just two series and Mason Crosby hit a 52 yard field goal to cap the second.  Moments later, Kentrell Brice intercepted Trevor Siemian over the middle and returned the pick 42 yards to the Denver 2.

On the next snap, Ty Montgomery crashed in for the touchdown and the early advantage.

By halftime, the Broncos got even on a 16 C.J. Anderson touchdown run and a 28 yard Brian McManus Field goal on the final play of the half.

Brett Hundley finished the game at quarterback and while he had a nice completion percentage, most of his throws were underneath coverages or checkdown routes.   Protection was also a problem as Hundley was sacked a handful of times.

The offense managed only 256 yards and converted just 2 of 13 third down plays and they were 0 for 4 on fourth down conversions, twice Hundley was stopped on quarterback sneaks.

Denver got another McManus field goal to open the second half and Hunter Sharp caught a 21 yard touchdown behind Lenzy Pipkins late in the third quarter to give the Broncos a 20-10 lead.

Hundley's six yard scoring run brought the Packers to within three but they never threatened on their last three possessions.

The Packers (2-1) will finish the Pre-Season next Thursday night, hosting the Los Angeles Rams at Lambeau Field at 7:00 PM.

Seminar Offering Home Protection Tips

FOX CROSSING, WI (WTAQ) - Fox Crossing residents are invited to a police department seminar Monday evening.

Officer Jason Weber says the goal is to teach people about the technologies available to safeguard their homes.

"Property crime tends to be the biggest issue that we have.  It's the burglaries, the thefts, so we try to get people to target-harden their homes."

Weber notes there are a variety of technologies available, including cameras.

"Now granted the cameras are reactive, but once you start doing that, and the word gets out that 'hey man, these people might have cameras and there might be cameras around,' then that ultimately becomes a deterrent effect."

Weber says representatives from a pair of companies will be on hand, demonstrating products and offering discounts on some those items.

"Home Depot jumped on board, so they give 10% off any locks, lighting, safety, security related type of item."

Weber claims Ring Video Doorball will also offer a $50 discount on their products, which typically run for roughly $150.

He stresses the importance of these safeguards, noting that posting surveillance images and videos on social media has become one of their main ways of catching criminals.

"Our agency had posted a picture of an individual that was taken from a surveillance camera.  I kid you not, within 30 minutes, we had phone calls and that person was identified."

Weber says Monday's home protection seminar starts at 6 pm at the Fox Crossing Community Center, 1000 Valley Road.

Milestone Birthday For GBPD

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - Old newspaper clippings, give a glimpse into the long-standing history of the Green Bay Police Department.

The department which was founded on August 27, 1857, celebrated it's 160th birthday Sunday.

It is working to put together a "history book," highlighting memories over the years.

"By looking at our past, it allows us to look forward, and look where we're going as an organization," said Lt. Jody Buth.

Sifting through old scrap books, Buth who is coordinating the project, tells WLUK it's been quite the task.

"The original intention was to have it done for today, the 160th anniversary of the Green Bay Police Department, but as we got along it's probably going to be the 170th." Buth says the scrap books, date back to 1937, under Police Chief Thomas Hawley.

"He had tasked his records division, every morning they read the press gazette, cut out articles the Green Bay Police Department was mentioned in, they would do this, and put them in these scrap books."

Chief Hawley holds the title in the Guinness Book of World Records, as the longest serving police chief on record at 49 years. From newspaper clippings, to photos....each little piece of history shows how the agency has progressed over the years.

Buth says the opportunity to walk back in time has given him a sense of pride, "Because you look back at all the great work that a lot of the officers have done over the years."

Looking ahead to the next 100 years, he says times may change, but their commitment to protect and serve remains the same.

Once the book is complete, the department plans to make it available to the public.

ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - After years works in the making, Ashwaubenon High School science teacher, Dan Albrent, tells WLUK he has found a way to bring gardening into the classroom.

"We're providing all the lettuce and then from then on the tomatoes, and eventually make enough money to put on a green house to our school and to keep it going."

Albrent wanted to develop a science curriculum to include science and landscape. His students will learn how to grow fruits and vegetables.

Students will also learn how to grow lettuce without soil, a process called hydroponics.

"When we go out in the courtyard and one kid goes 'hey my lettuce is better than your lettuce', that's the kind of competition and pride that I want them to take with them."

According to Albrent, students could produce about 300 heads of lettuce in 45 days. One way to make lettuce without soil is by using fish.

"Basically we have tanks on the side that will eventually cycle through our fish. Fish will produce the bacteria, the bacteria will be living inside the tube and inside some of the filters, breaking down fish waste. The plants will suck up those nutrients, clean out water a bit and then it's a conserve system."

Albrent started working on the school's courtyard four years ago. The yard includes fruit trees, strawberries, native wild flowers, and a tomato jungle.

Albert plans to grow native trees and raise chickens in the near future. Currently, the courtyard has an unfinished chicken coop.

The science teacher said he comes up with the ideas and the students take over the projects.

The plan is to sell fresh produce to Ashwaubenon Food Service for a cheaper price, while making the school some profit.

Packers Sharing History with Fans

ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) - Packer fans have a chance this fall to learn about various aspects of their team's past.

The organization is holding a series of monthly 'history nights.'

Hall of Fame and Stadium Tour Manager Krissy Zegers says Tuesday's installment is titled 'Training Camp Traditions.'

"Talking about the many things that the Packers do that are specific and special to the organization itself, all regarding training camp."

Zegers explains the point of creating the series, which launched in February but took a break over the summer.

"There's a lot more of a story behind many of the things that our exhibits are talking about.  Us offering history nights is really giving fans an opportunity to take one step deeper into some of the exhibits that we actually have in the Hall of Fame."

In addition to Tuesday's session on training camp, Zegers notes there is a September 26 gathering on 'Packers Tall Tales,' a 'Growing the Gridiron' presentation on October 25, and a 'Home for the Holidays' session on November 28.

Zegers explains how they decided on the topics.

"We hear different questions that fans are coming up with on stadium tours or questions that fans are asking in the Hall of Fame."

According to Zegers, the various topics will be covered by an array of guest presenters.

"They're either within the organization or they have very close ties to the organization.  What we're really trying to do is tap into a lot of the resources that we have within the building that have pretty great stories, but the stories may not always be shared to the general public."

Tickets are $15 per session and can be purchased at Lambeau Field or by clicking here.

Safe Ride Home For Drinking Drivers

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - A new partnership will help provide more free rides home to people who've been drinking.

Monday, the Wisconsin Tavern League announced it will work with ride-sharing app, called Lyft. The joint venture got its roots in Brown County.

At his Green Bay bar Richard Craniums, Don Mjelde offers SafeRides to his customers.

He tells WLUK that recently he started working with Lyft to expand the program.

"I've been using it for the past three months and it's been working quite well."

As the president of the Brown County Tavern League Mjelde convinced six other bar owners to try it too. It's been so successful the Wisconsin Tavern League decided to partner with Lyft for SafeRides statewide.

"Sometimes it's quicker, cost means are, generally, similar, sometimes a little bit less through Lyft and we appreciate everything the cab services are doing, this just offers a supplemental way to get people home during saturated times as well."

Much like you can request a personal Lyft through your phone using the app, Mjelde says bar employees can request rides for customers using a business account on a table or a computer.

"Keeping on the cutting edge and getting the SafeRide program up to speed on these technological advancements is essential."

Soon any bars that are tavern league members, in an area served by Lyft can join the program, but it will not be a requirement.

The Lyft rides will be free for customers, just like the current cab rides.

Pete Madland, the executive director of the state tavern league says it will take some time before the program becomes wide spread.

"It's gonna take some education. It's gonna take some time for people to get in the habit of doing things differently. Not only bar owners, but, also, their patrons."

He and Mjelde say SafeRides are extremely important and this move will make them better.

"We've seen a 50% drop in alcohol-related fatalities in the last eight years and we like to think that our SafeRide program has a lot to do with that," said Madland.

"There's been 83,000 SafeRides home last year in the state a lone. That's over 225 a day," added Mjelde.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The latest North Korean missile launch, right over neighboring Japan, has put the unsettled situation in that part of the world back on the front burner.

Wisconsin's 8th District Congressman Mike Gallagher says this comes at a time when the U-S military is not at full strength.

"With two destroyers out of commission in the Pacific, our own capabilities are significantly degraded."

Gallagher says the U-S can respond with increasing economic pressure on North Korea.

"The administration, and the Treasury Department in particular, has begun to impose greater pressure on Chinese banks doing business in North Korea."

But he's also inclined to show a little more muscle.

"Knocking one of these missiles out of the sky the next time he conducts a test like this as a demonstration of our capability and resolve."

Gallagher also says the actions and posture taken by Kim Jong-un make a pretty good case why Congress needs to beef up defense spending.
