GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Big plans were unveiled for the NEW Zoo and Adventure Park on Thursday.

Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach revealed a new Master Plan to the County's Education and Recreation Committee.

The proposal will bring together the 1,600 acres of the NEW Zoo, Adventure Park and Reforestation Camp into one cohesive destination place.

“The NEW Zoo and Adventure Park is an impact player when it comes to attractions and quality of life in Brown County,” Streckenbach said.

NEW Zoo Director Neil Anderson says he couldn't be more excited about the extended project.

"We're looking at 10 to 20 years. We have some ambitious projects that are in here (the plan) that are out a little bit further between the 10 and 20 and we have some that we'd like to get going within the 10 year."

Some of the projects Anderson's talking about include a new entrance, tree-top trail, a possible splash pad, and much more.

"We are going to put, what we're calling a "Zip and Slip." So we are going to do a 300 foot slip and slide from the top of the hill to the bottom of the hill," said Anderson.

The "zip" part is the already popular zip line.

Anderson says the new Master Plan strengthens the guest experience for the entire park.

"We wanted to create the regional destination for wildlife conservation, education, and adventure."

The total cost is estimated between $25-30 million dollars.

Flying A Different Flag

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - A flag with a peace sign on it now hangs at the home that donned a Nazi flag earlier in the week.

This after social media backlash, and alleged threats against a neighbor.

"I wanna know who did it so I can give them a hug," says Rosangela Diaz.

A much different symbol than what was flown there before - a Nazi flag.

Diaz spoke to WLUK.

"I definitely have to give kudos to whoever put the flag up there, the new one at least. Because it's definitely representing the opposite of what the original flag did, and that's always a plus."

Diaz lives on the other side of the duplex where the Nazi flag was flown.

Since images of the flag spread on social media, she says she received several threats, despite not being responsible for putting the flag up.

"I don't know the true reason behind it, but it's had quite an effect on us. By the good grace of God, everything is calming down. We haven't had anyone bothering us for the last day and a half or so"

Because of all the threats earlier in the week, Diaz and her family plan to leave the duplex.

"We're in the process of moving, I no longer feel safe here"

So far, no one has been able to get in touch with the resident who hung the Nazi flag, or whoever hung the peace flag in its place.

A Fishing Trip Could Put You On Thin Ice

DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - The recent warm-up is causing a winter fishing spot in the lower Fox River to fade away.

Anglers try their luck for walleye and white bass through the ice at Voyageur Park in De Pere, but those anglers are being asked to stay on shore, for now.

With pockets of open water, and cracks all around, Zachary Mickle and Chris Mitcheltree tell WLUK they knew right away they wouldn't be ice fishing Thursday morning.

"It looks like we're not getting out on it. There's a bunch of open spots. The current is just eating away at the ice. There's no way to get out there" "It's not worth your life coming out here, just for a fish. Falling through that water, because if you go through, in this current, they're not going to find you. If they do, it's gong to be too late,"

The recent warm up is causing the Fox River to run, and the De Pere Dam is just upstream.

Rich Annen is the Assistant Chief at De Pere Fire-Rescue.

"Any time you're near rapid water, that ice will not freeze as much as it does say in dead water, or calm water"

Annen says De Pere Fire-Rescue responds to several calls each season for people needing help along the Fox River. He says if you do fall through the ice, there isn't much time.

"If you fall into 32 degree water, you've got anywhere from 10-15 minutes, and your muscles are going to tighten up, and you're probably not going to do a whole lot to save yourself. You're not going to get to your cell phone. So don't think that your cell phone is going to be your saving there. The only thing that's going to save you at that point in time, is other fishermen, or people on shore, that will be able to acess 9-1-1 to alert us to it"

Meanwhile back at the park, the two fishermen called it quits.

"No. No. We're definitely not going out there today," said Mickle.

Officials warn no ice is ever 100 percent safe.

De Pere Fire-Rescue and Ashwaubenon Public Safety will hold an ice-rescue training session just south of the dam, this Saturday.

Voter Fraud Should Not Be Top Priority

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) Wisconsin's senior Senator says the President should not make investigating possible voter fraud his top priority.

Ron Johnson telling WTAQ's Jerry Bader Show today (Friday) that while ensuring the integrity of elections is "extremely important," he "would not list this as a top priority the Donald Trump administration should be focused on at this time."

Trump says he wants an investigation into the widely debunked claim that there was widespread voter fraud in the November election he won.

Trump claims anywhere from 3 to 5 million votes were illegally cast...and that's why he did not win the popular vote on election day.

Eau Claire County Clerk Donna Austad says President Trump's complaint about voter fraud is unfounded in her office.

Austad says voters are flagged once they vote in Wisconsin, meaning they'll be caught if they try to vote again in another state.

Johnson won re-election in November and Trump carried Wisconsin.

A recount of Wisconsin's presidential election results changed few votes and revealed no widespread abuse or fraud.

Johnson says he would like Trump to focus on things like regulatory reform, even though he says it is "not a very sexy subject."

FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) - A teen who allegedly wrote a note threatening to "shoot up" Fond du Lac High School was ordered Thursday to stand trial.

17 year old Austin Hill faces one count of making a terrorist threat for the January 11th incident.

No arraignment has been scheduled because Hill asked for a new judge, who has not yet been assigned, according to court records.

Another student, who was referred to juvenile authorities, allegedly dropped the note in a school hallway.

Hill admitted to writing it, but later said he had no intention of carrying out any threat.

In Wisconsin, 17-year-olds are automatically charged in adult court.

MADISON, WI (WRN) - Wisconsin could have new legislative districts in place for the 2018 elections.

Under an order issued Friday morning by a three judge panel in Madison, the state is barred from using the current district maps in future elections.

Lawmakers were also told to have a new version in place by November of this year.

The order follows a previous decision by the court that found Wisconsin’s current legislative district maps as unconstitutional.

Groups challenging the district lines drawn in 2011 argued Republicans drew them in such a way that reduced the influence of Democratic voters.

The state is expected to appeal the original ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court.

A spokesman for the state Department of Justice said they are currently reviewing today’s order, but they do expect to appeal it as well.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) -  Music fans who have been waiting "the longest time" for another concert at Lambeau Field will get their wish when Billy Joel holds a concert in June, sources have confirmed to FOX 11.

The concert will be scheduled for June 17.

Promoter Live Nation has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday morning at the Lambeau Field Atrium to formally announce the concert.

Tickets are expected to go on sale soon after that.

According to Joel's website, other Midwest stops on his 2017 tour include a July 28 concert at Target Field in Minneapolis and an Aug. 11 concert at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

The Green Bay Packers, Live Nation and the stadium district board have been exploring holding a second concert with a different performer that same weekend.

However, stadium district board executive director Pat Webb says that is unlikely this year, but could happen in future years.

The last concert at Lambeau Field was a Kenny Chesney performance in 2015.

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - Just one year ago, Chris and Kristi Maki's lives changed forever.

After losing three of their four children to a devastating house fire, 11-year-old Natalie Martin, 10-year-old Ben Martin, and 7-year-old Carter Maki.

The couple shared their story at Crossroads Community Church in Sheybogan with a message of hope.

"The most important thing is you're sure of where your hope is."

Explaining the highs, "They're really good days that we just continue on with life, we're happy" and the lows, "There are days I wake up and it just feels like everything I do is heavy; like I have a 50-pound backpack on driving to work."

Kristi Maki talks about the moments that have been the hardest.

"It wasn't until three weeks later I was a mess, it hit me I only sent one child to school instead of four"

Jeff Jaeger, senior pastor at the church spoke to WLUK, and says the couple's faith has helped them get through the loss.

"As they decided to step into this opportunity it took a ton of courage to do that today."

Jaeger says the Maki's sharing their story is a part of the healing process, not only for them, but the community who has supported them through it all.

"Our hope is that the community really senses the role that they played in helping this family continue to move forward and pick up the pieces after such an unthinkable loss"

As she continued, Maki explained there has been a silver lining

"The miracle that people don't realize most of the time is we still have Jenna, that fact Jenna is still alive is an absolute miracle."

The Makis relied on their faith and friends through church to help them get through their pain.

They hope their sharing their struggle will help others live to fight another day.

Green Bay is No Sanctuary

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Last Wednesday President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at stripping federal money from states and sanctuary cities that shelter illegal immigrants.

Many people may wonder if Green Bay is considered a sanctuary city and if this order will have any ramifications on the community.

Police Chief Andrew Smith explains Green Bay's status.

"Green Bay is not a sanctuary city and as far as I know, it never has been. So, the sanctuary city terms in the president's declaration really won't affect us here at all in Green Bay."

The chief says immigration is a federal issue and his officers don't ask people about their immigration status.

"We tell our officers that a person's immigration status is really not a concern for us until they commit a crime. Somebody commits a crime, we don't even ask them their immigration status then. But when they get to jail and they're being detained in the jail, that's when the immigration status gets questioned," Smith said.

Smith says having good relations with all groups, including the immigrant community, is critical with reporting and solving crimes.

"We're here to help people. We're here to solve crimes. We're here to prevent people from being taken advantage of and victimized. We're not here to enforce immigration laws."

Calming Fears Of A Worried Population

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - Following President Donald Trump's executive orders this past Wednesday against immigrants, the Mayor of Appleton talked to members of the community affected by the news.

Speaking to a full crowd Sunday morning at St. Therese Church, Appleton Mayor Tim Hanna addressed immigration and answered questions about city policies.

Afterwards, Hanna spoke to WLUK.

"I want them to know that we still care about them that they're part of our community."

Norys Pina, who runs Unidos por un Futuro Mejor Fox Cities, says many immigrants are concerned.

"The community is living in fear right now with all that is happening around the country. We think it is important for the community to hear the message directly from the mayor."

On Wednesday, Trump signed an executive order denying federal funding to sanctuary cities, which are cities that don't follow federal orders to detain illegal immigrants.

Hanna says... "We have not declared ourselves a sanctuary city, we do work with the federal government. When they request our assistance we provide assistance."

But Hanna says that does not mean Appleton police will actively seek out and detain illegal immigrants.

"We still treat people as human beings. We're going to treat them with dignity and respect, that's not going to change"

Trump goes on to say his order focuses on people who pose a threat to public safety.

Back at Sunday's meeting, attendees, like Claudio Lewin, focused on what Hanna had to say.

"I know he meant what he said. He made me feel safe, that's for sure."

The group says it will continue to host community events like this to keep the conversation going.

Since Appleton has not formally declared itself a sanctuary city, Hanna says it is unclear whether or not federal funding will be withheld.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Gas prices dropped in the Green Bay and Fox Valley areas last week.

According to GasBuddy, drivers in the Green Bay area were paying 7.1 cents less per gallon on Sunday than they were a week earlier, with the average price at $2.26.

In the Appleton area, the price was down 3.2 cents to $2.21.

Industry analysts say weak demand has led to the drop in prices, which has lasted for more than three weeks.

In a news release Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, says

"Before motorists celebrate such cheap gas, the sweet deal likely won't stick much longer as we've been waiting since last week to see such loss-leaders to disappear. However, we may continue to see the national average moderate during the next week, with the exception in the Great Lakes - where a price adjustment of sorts is still expected."

MADISON, WI (WTAQ-METRO SOURCE) - The Wisconsin DOJ, the Attorney General and the Coalition against Sexual Assault are teaming up to support survivors of sexual assault.

The "By Your Side" campaign is designed to help survivors who had a rape kit collected, but don't know if their kit was tested for DNA evidence.

Attorney General Brad Schimel says connecting victims with the hundreds of untested rape kits could help solve cold cases.

Survivors will also be connected to victim services through the By Your Side program.

DOJ and the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault have launched a website and hotline, which victims can use to track down their sexual assault kits.

The hotline is at 1-800-446-6564 and the website is at By-Your-Side-W-I-dot-o-r-g.
