GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - It's hard to imagine a family member here one minute and then gone the next.

In the latest episode of WTAQ's Green Bay Crime, police continue to look for clues into what happened to 40-year-old Dawn Mohn, who went missing August 21, 2000 after visiting a bar on the city's west side.

Investigations Commander Jim Runge explains what happened that night.

"There was an apartment above the bar that some people lived and she was associated with that. She was there for a corn roast one night...after that she disappeared and has not been seen since."

Shortly after she went missing, individuals close to her were interviewed.

"The boyfriend and others she'd been associated with had been talked to, search warrants had been done, a property outside of Green Bay had been searched to no avail," said Runge.

The department hasn't had a lead in the case although it's reviewed by detectives on a monthly basis.

"We have several missing people, just like they fell off the face of the earth," Runge said.

Next Round Of Ice On The Way

MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - As another possible storm moves into Northeast Wisconsin, people across the area are still dealing with the effects of last week's weather.

The storm left a blanket of ice in many communities and many are still digging their way from under that ice.

Another ice storm in the forecast has led to busy days at the Menasha Kitz & Pfeil.

"People tend to panic," said assistant manager Mike Straw.

Straw tells WLUK that panic has then led to nearly record sales of ice melt products.

"Probably at the highest that they've been since I've been here,

A few pallets of ice melt product are all this Kitz & Pfeil location has left from a semi truck full.

"There are a lot of stores that are out right now. We've been fortunate in that we've planned ahead"

The only products the store has left are rock salt and calcium chloride. Both of which come with cons. Neither is pet friendly and rock salt is very rough on concrete, for example.

No matter how difficult, however, Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O'Leary says it's important you get rid of ice on your walk ways. Whether that's ice from last week, or ice that develops later.

"We've had an incredible amount of falls, slips and falls. We've had serious injuries"

According to O'Leary some people have broken bones because of slips.

"We still have a lot of winter left. So I think people need to be resourceful"

There are other products you can try besides the traditional ice melts like sand, water softener salt or even beet juice.

And Straw said you can put a little ice melt down before the next round of weather. He advised letting it do it's work and then doing yours.

"Remove the ice after it's done its job so that it doesn't refreeze"

The best advice of all may be getting at the snow and ice right away, before it becomes even harder to remove.

Straw recommends using sand if you have pets or new concrete. He said that will be the most gentle on paws and cause the least damage to the concrete.

FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) - Mercury Marine officially opened a plant containing a $24 million dollar electro deposition paint (EDP) system on Monday.

Mercury leaders say it will more than double the capacity of the current facility.

The expansion is part of Mercury's investment of more than $730 million since 2008 on additions and improvements to the global headquarters in Fond du Lac.

The new plant broke ground in 2015, but it took 18 months to complete.

Mercury Marine's president, John Pfeifer, says the EDP system improves the quality of Mercury's products, giving them the reliability to sustain harsh environments.

"This sets Mercury up for the next 20, maybe 30 years to continue to grow globally with the products we produce," Pfiefer said.

ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) - Business is picking up at one area ticket distributor after the Green and Gold's victory on Sunday.

Folks are interested in tickets for the NFC Championship game in Atlanta, Georgia on Januray 22nd.

Travis Loftus, manager of Ticket King in Ashwaubenon, says online ticket sales began increasing after the Pack's victory Sunday. Good news, He doesn't expect ticket prices to rise too much higher than they already are.

"To be honest, I think the price, if anything, might come down a little bit later in the week. If I was a buyer, I'd probably pull the trigger anytime between now and Thursday."

Tickets are selling anywhere from $350 for upper level end zone seats, all the way to $800 for lower level seats around the 30 yard line.

Loftus says it's not too soon to start thinking about the Super Bowl.

"We've actually had some season ticket holders that won the lottery, to be put in with the Super Bowl drawing. We've been doing contracts with them if the Packers would go that far to sell Super Bowl tickets to us," said Loftus.

Be wary of scams as well. Lotus reiterates if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.

The Perils of Ice

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Icy conditions have been plaguing Northeast Wisconsin for a couple of weeks now.

Layers of ice and slush on sidewalks and parking lots are causing many of us to be extremely vigilant when walking to our cars or into stores.

Dr. Jocko Zifferblatt, Emergency Department Medical Director at HSHS St. Vincent and St. Mary’s Hospitals in Green Bay, says they've been treating people with more than just bumps and bruises.

"We're seeing a multitude of falls including injured wrists, ankles, multiple broken bones...people have hit their heads, concussions. So, there's been a lot of injuries."

Strangely enough, Zifferblatt says what you wear, can help you stay safe from injury.

"You should not wear any flat shoes, you should have shoes with rubber soles on them. Make sure you are using padded coats, gloves and hats to protect you. Other things include taking short steps and walking flat-footed," said Zifferblatt.

If you do fall down, be sure to watch for these symptoms.

"If you're having a lot of pain with walking or it you can't bend your wrists, you need to come in. Mostly, if you hit your head and your vomiting and have persistent headaches, you need to come in," Zifferblatt cautioned.

One Step Closer To Big School Referendum

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - Despite weather concerns, dozens of people showed up to Green Bay's school board meeting last night to discuss referendum options.

“I don't like referendums,” said Patrick Doherty, a former school board member.

“I'm 100 percent for the referendum,” said Sherry Madsen of New Franken.

The district is considering two referendums. The first would address overcrowding at east side schools and cost $68.25 million. The second would ask voters to exceed state revenue limits for regular operating costs by $15 million a year for ten years.

Katie Williams spoke to WLUK.

“I got more of the feeling from the parents not that they objected to a recurring, but some were a little bit more on edge about the feeling of a recurring referendum”

District leaders have said the operational referendum would prevent drastic budget cuts and larger class sizes, if money from the state is not increased.

Most of the people at the board meeting, however, addressed the possible overcrowding referendum.

The board had been looking at three options to address overcrowding.

It came to a consensus on an option that would potentially impact 19 schools. Those changes include building a new elementary school where Baird School sits. The option would also change school boundaries, but in the board's view minimize them.

A district spokesperson says the overcrowding option the board chose removes the other two options. One of those eliminated options was to build a new 4K-8th grade school on the district's far east side.

“I think this referendum that we're putting forth really emphasizes that what we're trying to do is invest in our young people,” said Sandy Juno of Green Bay.

The board is expected to vote on referendum resolutions next week, just before the deadline for each question to appear on the April ballot.

Clogged Inlets Create Street Ponding

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - You might have noticed water collecting along city streets and parking lots over the past couple of days.

Green Bay Public Works Director, Steve Grenier, says last week's snow fall and the current icy conditions are both factors in why the water is not draining properly.

"When we plow, obviously we plow back to the curb and tends to fill in the storm water inlets."

Plus, the recent icy conditions doesn't help either. Grenier says all hands are on deck to clear out the inlets with around 100 employees on a mission.

"We've got tractors and loaders and guys in pickup trucks with shovels and picks and blow torches even," said Grenier.

It's not an easy job and it will likely take several days to complete.

But as temperatures begin to rise, the city is focusing on clearing the roads too.

"We're out now with graders and we're starting to systematically work our way through the routes citywide and with the grader you can actually press down, it's what we call down pressure. We can generate some down pressure to help peel that accumulated material back up off of the street."

Grenier asks homeowners for a favor.

"We'd like folks to adopt those inlets. When you're clearing your driveway and your sidewalk, take a couple of minutes after each snowfall and go down and make sure that inlet is cleared of snow and ice and keep those open," Grenier said.
