KEWAUNEE, WI (WTAQ) - Ten-thousand Chinook salmon fingerlings are being protected while they get a chance to grow up in Lake Michigan.

The state DNR has released the baby fish in two holding pens in the Kewaunee River. The pens are designed to keep birds and other species from eating up the tiny fish -- and that will help the young salmon get acclimated to Lake Michigan.

Algoma fishing guide Lee Haasch tells FOX 11 that the new salmon should give the Kewaunee area a boost in tourism, and make the region a popular destination for sport fishing.

A state law passed last year allows the DNR to work as partners with local sporting clubs on fish development in various waterways.

The clubs normally pay for build the pens, feed the young fish, and check on their progress.

CHILTON, WI (WTAQ) - A college science professor says he'll run for Congress this fall.

Ron Gruett of Chilton is the first Democrat to announce a bid against four-year GOP incumbent Reid Ribble of Sherwood.

The 64-year-old Gruett ran for the state Assembly two years ago, and lost in a Democratic primary.

He's a physics and chemistry professor at Marian University in Fond du Lac, and he taught at Brillion High School from 1973 to 2005.

Gruett tells the Appleton Post-Crescent he's frustrated with Ribble's votes to repeal the Obama Affordable Care Act. He said Ribble is a nice guy but as he put it, "He's doing despicable things for taking health care away from 14 million people."

Gruett says he's convinced that Ribble has "got it in" for the middle class.

Ribble had almost a million dollars in his campaign fund as of March 31st. He unseated Democratic incumbent Steve Kagen in 2010, and easily defeated Jamie Wall of Green Bay two years ago.

Now, Specialist Zackary Warnke will compete in a regional competition in Minnesota.

The 34-year-old Warnke is a member of the 32nd Infantry Brigade's combat team.

Soldiers and non-commissioned officers have their skills evaluated in a variety of ways -- including firearm tests, and a 12-mile march while carrying a 30-pound backpack.

Guard officials say it's quite an accomplishment for one of their part-time members to make it this far -- because they're competing with full-time Army soldiers.

Warnke is a full-time student at UW-Oshkosh. He'll be competing among soldiers from seven other states in May at Camp Ripley in Minnesota.

LITTLE CHUTE, WI (WTAQ) - The Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway is looking to renovate several lock tender houses along the Fox River.

The group will aim to renovate three of those homes, which helped boats and shipping around the clock on the Fox River until the 1980s, in Little Chute and Combined Locks.

Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway's first task is a $150,000 project to renovate the inside of a lock tender house in Little Chute.

President Candice Mortara tells FOX 11 they want to renovate them to use as vacation rental properties. Mortara says with the reopening of many of the locks along the Fox River in recent years, kayakers and boaters are interested in renting properties along the river.

So far, the group has raised nearly $2,800 toward the project. Anyone interested in donating money or time for the project can visit their website at heritageparkway.org.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The Lambeau Field Atrium will open its doors Saturday for the 21st annual Packers Pro Shop Tent Sale.

"It's a great opportunity to get great prices on Packers items and it's kind of grown into the big, fun event," says Packers Director of Retail Operations Kate Hogan. "Discounts are anywhere from about 50 to 75 percent. We have about 25,000 units of merchandise to sell."

Team officials say the sale is happening earlier than in previous years, due to the construction at Lambeau Field and the work that the Pro Shop team must complete in preparation for the new store. The new Pro Shop is scheduled to open this summer.

The sale will feature the traditional mix of Pro Shop items and other special purchases, like team apparel no longer in use. Some items are practice-worn gear not normally available in the Pro Shop.

If you're planning to head to Lambeau Field, you should enter the Atrium through the Oneida Nation Gate. Parking is available in the lot on Lambeau Field's east side near the Oneida Nation Gate, which can be accessed only off Lombardi Avenue due to construction on Oneida Street.

The Packers Pro Shop Tent Sale runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A number of open carry advocates held a demonstration in downtown Green Bay early Sunday morning.

Charles Branstrom of Appleton gathered outside several bars on S. Washington Street with about a dozen of his friends. Some were carrying concealed weapons.

This comes a week after an altercation between a Green Bay police officer and a bar patron was caught on cell phone video.

According to police, an external agency is reviewing the incident which went viral during the past week.

In the video, 29-year-old Joshua Wenzel can be heard cursing at Officer Derek Wicklund. Wicklund then knocks down Wenzel. Wenzel was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Wicklund is temporarily assigned to other work while the department investigates.

Branstrom told FOX 11 that the more than three hours on the sidewalk was time well spent, to ensure no one was unlawfully harassed by police.

“I didn’t see anything bad happen. You know, we just came out, had a presence and made sure everybody acted within the law,” Branstrom said.

Green Bay police tell FOX 11 the night was quieter than expected. The department says there were no disturbances on Washington St., either from Branstrom’s group or unruly bar patrons.

Julie Loeffelholz out as Outagamie County's EM Director

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - Outagamie County is apparently looking for a new emergency management director.

The Outagamie County Executive's office says they will release more information later Monday, but Julie Loeffelholz is no longer on the job.

The agency came under fire following sirens failing ahead of six tornadoes which tore through the county last August.

After that, members of the Outagamie County Board ordered an outside review of the department and its response to the tornadoes.

County officials won’t say if Loeffelholz was fired, or if she resigned Monday. Public Safety Committee Chair Jim Duncan told FOX 11 he’s pleased with the change.

“Obviously, we concur with their decision, because, and I told them that I would say that, because back in September, we would make a recommendation that some sort of disciplinary action would be taken,” said Duncan.

Loeffelholz’s departure also comes a few days after another report was released. That showed her department failed to sound emergency sirens on August 7 during this severe storm, which caused $30 million in damage.

Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson says that’s not the reason she’s no longer working for the county. Nelson says he hopes to appoint an interim director soon.

Deputy Emergency Management Director Mike Pamperin will be in charge for now.

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin's education agency is encouraging schools to adopt new safety regulations.

The Department of Public Instruction is highlighting measures developed jointly by education and emergency response leaders.

The proposals include the creations of local and statewide crisis response teams, safety planning teams for each school, and training so school staffers know what to do in the event of emergencies. Other recommendations include controlled access to schools, managing visitors, and new security technology like surveillance cameras and two-way radios.

Wisconsin schools are already required to have their own safety plans -- and to review them every three years.

The education and emergency response team proposed model policies for both schools and local communities to adopt together.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - All of Wisconsin will get more April showers Tuesday.

But there could be snow showers in the far north, enough for another inch or two of the heavy white stuff.

Hawthorne in Douglas County picked up a half-inch of snow and sleet as of early Monday evening. The rest of Wisconsin got a quarter to a half inch of rain for most of Monday.

Stueben in the southwest had just over 1.25 inches of rain.

The National Weather Service said a slow moving low pressure system brought several bands of showers into the Badger State. That will continue through Thursday.

Forecasters say Tuesday will be the roughest weather day, with snow in the north and thunderstorms possible throughout southern Wisconsin. Rain showers are predicted statewide Wednesday and Thursday, with a chance of rain continuing into the weekend.

Temperatures will stay colder than normal, with highs in the 40's and 50's and lows ranging down into the 30's statewide most nights this week.

Green Bay Water Utility to use new water main flushing program

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A new water main flushing program is being rolled out this year by the Green Bay Water Utility.

Starting Monday, the utility will use a method called uni-directional flushing. The goal is to remove settled particles from underground water mains. Uni-directional flushing is an alternative to adding chemicals to the water.

The water utility wants the public to be aware of a few things during the flushing program.

“When the flushing is taking place in your neighborhood, you may notice some discoloration for a short period of time as minerals are dislodged from the water pipes,” said Brian Powell, Water Utility Engineering Services Manager. “If possible, do not use water while the flushing is taking place in your neighborhood. After flushing is completed, if the water is discolored, you may need to run cold water for 5 to 10 minutes until it clears in order to flush the iron minerals from the system.”

Powell also says water pressure may drop briefly in the area where flushing is taking place.

Plans call for uni-directional flushing to begin near the intersection of Baird and Lawe streets. Crews will then move systematically throughout the city. Flushing is expected to take 18 months.

Utility leaders say they will notify key customers before flushing is taking place in their area. Those customers include hospitals and clinics, dentist offices, restaurants, schools, Laundromats, hair salons and buildings with fire suppression systems.

For more information and to find out when flushing is taking place in your neighborhood, call (920) 448-3480 or log on to the Green Bay Water Utility’s website.
