GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Green Bay's far east side could become home to a new psychiatric hospital.

Strategic Behavioral Health conducted a nationwide search and found Green Bay has the greatest need for its services.

So the Tennessee-based group says they want to build a $10 million facility in an area between Ontario Road and Einstein Way in the I-43 Business Park.

“If you do the population demographic, you’ll see there is a bed need,” Jim Shaheen, president and founder of Strategic Behavioral Health, told FOX 11.

The proposed Green Bay hospital would have 72 beds, and serve people of all ages for mental health and substance abuse. The facility would employ 200 people.

“We’ve designed these hospitals from a physical plan specifically for these patient populations,” said Shaheen.

Strategic Behavioral Health plans to buy a 10 acre property from the city for just under $500,000. City staff views the project as a perfect fit for the I-43 Business Park.

“As far as that core area around Aurora, it’s pretty well built,” Green Bay director of economic development Kevin Vonck told FOX 11. “We really felt it was a great fit with what we’re trying to go after.”

Strategic Behavioral Health hopes to break ground in June and open a year later. The health care provider owns and operates 8 facilities nationwide with 3 others in development.

Under its Green Bay plan, the city would provide the company $1 million over five years in tax increment financing.
