Extreme cold temperatures playing havoc with Wisconsinites homes

JANESVILLE, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin always has at least one cold spell each winter -- but it's been so cold for so long in December, that folks are hearing strange noises at home.

Police in Janesville say they've had 11 calls about suspicious residential activity from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. In every one of those cases, police said they were caused by the falling temperatures and a contraction of pipes and other home materials.

According to the Janesville Gazette, one homeowner pulled out a handgun, thinking the odd noises were a burglar breaking in. Another woman feared the same thing, and she rounded up her kids before calling police.

Tuesday morning, it's been colder that the 4 to 10-below the National Weather Service had predicted for northern Wisconsin. It was minus-14 in Superior at 10 a.m., and it was below zero as far south as Viroqua.

Wind chills in the northern half of the state were generally in the minus-20's as of late morning. Janesville actually got a break. It was three-above in that city, with no wind chill.

Superior had a minus-30 wind chill early Tuesday.

It's supposed to remain cold into the New Year in the northern two-thirds of Wisconsin, while the southern-third gets anywhere from a half-inch to 6 inches of snow -- less than forecasters were projecting for this afternoon through New Year's Day.

Less frigid than expected to start 2014 in Wisconsin

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - It's not as cold as expected in northern Wisconsin on this first morning of 2014.

But the eastern counties along Lake Michigan will get a bigger dose of lake effect snow than was originally forecast -- up to 8 inches in Metro Milwaukee.

About the southern third of the Badger State got at least some snow on New Year's Eve.

Janesville reported the most, with three-and-a-half inches by early evening. Most other parts of the region had 2 to 3 inches.

The National Weather Service says a low pressure system that's moving south of Wisconsin will bring lake effect snows to eastern Wisconsin. Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha could get 4 to 8 inches Wednesday and Thursday. Three to five inches are in the forecast along the lake between Kewaunee and Ozaukee counties.

The nearest tier of inland counties can expect 1 to 3 inches. The rest of Wisconsin will stay dry, or close to it.

Meanwhile, it's warmer than expected in the north, if you can call it that. It was 17-below at 5 a.m. in Hayward, where the overnight low was predicted to be minus-27.

Winds are light for the most part. Highs Wednesday are expected from the single digits above in the north, to around 20 in the southeast.

Wednesday night's lows are expected to be in the teens in the south, to the teens-below in the far north.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - An area animal shelter is looking for help after part of its heating system failed.  The Bay Area Humane Society in Green Bay says one of its heat exchangers stopped working. The failure of the 20-year-old piece of equipment means the kennel area is without heat. It could take three to four weeks for a replacement to be found and installed.  Staff members say the area typically houses 40-50 dogs at any one time, and they are concerned about extreme cold temperatures in the forecast. For more information on helping, call (920) 469-3110 ext. 115.

NEW FRANKEN, WI (WTAQ) - Fire crews dealt with a major blaze at a New Franken home Thursday that was being remodled.

They were called to the home on Edgewater Beach Road Thursday morning. Construction crews working on the house were on scene when the fire started.

Authorities say the house suffered extensive damage. Firefighters struggled with the freezing temperatures and road conditions during the fire.

Officials say it’s still unclear exactly how the fire started. There is no damage estimate at this time.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Believe it or not, temperatures in much of northern Wisconsin rose by 10 to 15 degrees early Friday morning.

In Rice Lake, it was nine-below at 7 a.m. That was 15 degrees warmer than just three hours earlier, as a new weather system moves in with southerly winds.

It's still frigid, to be sure. Rice Lake's wind chill was minus-25 as the sun was about to rise.

The National Weather Service said Antigo and Green Bay set new record lows for this date. It got down to minus-25 into Antigo, breaking the old mark of 22-below set in 1979.

Green Bay fell to 18-below, not including the wind chill. That's one degree colder than the old mark set in 1887, 1911, and 1979.

Meanwhile, the Wisconsin Public Service Web site shows no more power outages as of 7:15 a.m. That was after 5,500 customers were listed as being out during the night in parts of far northern Wisconsin.

Alliant Energy, which had its Web site down early Friday, had only a couple outages as of 7 a.m.

Forecasters say it will be warmer Friday and Saturday, with highs in the teens and 20's with a chance of light snow and freezing drizzle.

On Sunday, it's supposed to get much colder, with wind chills dropping into the minus-50's in some places.

With some schools already cancelling classes on Monday and possibly Tuesday, Governor Scott Walker is considering an order to close all public schools on Monday.

Bay Area Humane Society getting help from local donations

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Community donations are helping to keep dozens of dogs at a Green Bay animal shelter from the dangerous cold weather.

On Friday, Robinson Heating and Cooling installed a temporary fix to Bay Area Humane Society's broken heat exchanger. The day before, that exchanger broke and is estimated to take weeks to replace. That forced the temperature in the main kennel to drop.

Also, the owners of Sidelines Sports Bar donated $3,000 Friday toward the cost of replacing the exchanger.

"We were blessed with another Packer game, so might as well give little bit back," Sidelines Sports Bar owner Kevin Burkel told FOX 11.

Officials with the shelter say they can't thank the community enough for donations that included hundreds of blankets. Among the blanket donations were 200 Friday morning from St. Vincent Hospital.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers will play host to the San Francisco 49ers today at Lambeau Field.

The biggest story in this game will be the weather, with wind chills and the mercury well below zero.

The other story is the same old music all season long… injuries. While the offense will be bolstered with Rodgers starting (collarbone), the defense will have to play without linebacker Clay Matthews (broken thumb).

Because of the cold temperatures, fans at the game will be treated to free coffee and hot chocolate at the concession stands.

Packers and 49ers get underway at 3:40 p.m., with Packers Preview starting at 1 p.m. on 1360/97.5 WTAQ News Talk Sports.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The extreme cold weather forecast Monday has led many school districts across the region to cancel classes.

The Green Bay Area Public School District and private schools will be closed, along with the district announcing the cancellation of Monday evening's Board of Education meeting at 5:30 p.m.

Severe cold weather is also leading to the cancellation of classes in all Appleton Area district schools. The Oshkosh Area School District will also close all schools Monday.

This also means that there will be no practices, games, or school events.

You can view a full list of cancellations here.

FOX 11 reports that highs on Monday are forecast to only reach -12. Lows will be near -20 with wind chills approaching -45 or -50 at times.

Frostbite can occur on unprotected skin in 10 minutes or less in these conditions.

Coldest weather in nearly two decades across Wisconsin

0

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin is shivering through its coldest weather in almost 18 years.

Temperatures were generally in the minus-teens and 20's at 4 a.m. Monday.

Sturgeon Bay in Door County was the warmest at six-below. Hayward was the coldest at 27-below. Wind-chills were in the minus-30's and 40's statewide.

Several places in the north had the coldest wind chill factors at 48-below -- including Superior, Ladysmith, New Richmond, and Osceola.

Much of the U.S. is freezing. Weather officials blame it on a "polar vortex" -- a whirlpool of dense, frigid air, that can be downright dangerous to be in.

That didn't stop 77,000-plus football fans from jamming Lambeau Field Sunday for the Green Bay Packers' playoff loss to San Francisco. It was five-above at kickoff, the seventh-coldest in Lambeau history -- and Monday morning, it was 10-below in Green Bay.

In Illinois, more than a foot of new snow made driving treacherous. Folks in southeast Wisconsin had to battle the bitter cold to move up to 13 inches which fell in that region late last week.

Officials in Milwaukee and other cities urged folks to stay inside and avoid the cold altogether. Schools are closed throughout Wisconsin.

Forecasters say it won't get above zero anywhere in the state until at least Wednesday.

In Rhinelander, 3,800 Wisconsin Public Service customers had their electricity cut off during the night. By 5 a.m., that number was down to around 1,450. It was 26-below in Rhinelander at that hour with wind chills down to 49-below -- the coldest in the state.

We Energies said almost 30 customers in the Green Bay area had outages due to an equipment problem.

Xcel Energy had almost 60 customers out in the Hudson and New Richmond areas. Wisconsin Power and Light reported around 20 outages.

Actual 5 a.m. temperatures ranged from 28-below at Phillips to six-below in Sturgeon Bay.

Forecasters predict light snow and blowing snow statewide Monday, with highs up to three-below along Lake Michigan, to minus-9 to -13 inland. No place in Wisconsin expects above zero readings until at least Wednesday.
