Matthews, Lacy dealing with injuries for Packers

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The Packers may have to move forward without linebacker Clay Matthews.

He reinjured his previously broken right thumb in last Sunday's home loss to Pittsburgh. Coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that his training staff, "didn't feel good about the injury, so we're still working through the process."

Matthews broke the base of his right thumb on October 6th against Detroit. The four-time Pro Bowler leads Green Bay with seven-and-a-half sacks this season -- four-and-a-half of which came in the 7 games since he returned from his initial injury.

Also, the Packers are not sure whether they'll have running back Eddie Lacy for Sunday's divisional showdown at Chicago. Lacy aggravated his sprained right ankle against the Steelers.

McCarthy said Lacy won't practice until Thursday, and they'll have a better of his status then.

Receiver and kick returner Randall Cobb will get more practice time this week. He broke a bone in his right leg in mid-October, and he remains on the injured reserve-designated to return list.

CHICAGO (WTAQ) - If you want to give Packer-Bear tickets for Christmas, you'll have to really open your wallet.

The ticket search engine Tiq-IQ says the average price is $427 to get into Sunday's contest in Chicago that will determine the NFC North champion.

The winner of the Green Bay-Chicago game will win the division crown and a playoff berth. The loser goes home in second place, and will have to watch the playoffs on TV.

Tuesday morning, both the Ticketmaster Ticket Exchange and StubHub were selling seats for as low as $170 apiece. They're located in the nosebleed sections in a corner of Soldier Field.

The weather shouldn't be a problem. Highs Sunday are predicted in the upper 20's. And just as reminder -- the kickoff was moved from Noon to 3:25 p.m.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Most of Wisconsin has received a fresh blanket of snow, making for an even whiter Christmas than it already was.

One-and-a-half to 4 inches of new snow fell Tuesday night and early Wednesday in the northern two-thirds of the state. It was still coming down at 5 a.m., but it was expected to leave soon after.

The final winter weather advisory expired at 5 a.m. in the Green Bay region.

Temperatures warmed up on Christmas Eve, and many places remained in the teens overnight. No place in Wisconsin reported below-zero readings.

Meanwhile, another low pressure system is expected to arrive in Wisconsin around mid-afternoon Wednesday. Up to one-and-a-half inches are possible through Christmas Night. South central areas could get the most.

A brief warm-up is expected through the end of the week. By Saturday, highs could be above freezing in the south. Arctic air could return early next week.

Packers lucky to be in position with Rodgers return and playoffs still in sight

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The Green Bay Packers are fortunate to be playing for the NFC North Division title on Sunday, considering how they played while Aaron Rodgers sat out.

Until three weeks ago, the Packer defense struggled mightily -- while the offense relied mainly on rookie running back Eddie Lacy to stay afloat.

The Packers went 2-5-1 with Rodgers on the sideline with his broken collarbone. Both victories came against two of the five worst defenses in the NFL in Atlanta and Dallas.

Meanwhile, teams in the N-F-C North went 10-18-2 in the seven weeks in which Rodgers sat out -- and such mediocrity is one reason the Packers still have a shot at their third straight North crown.

On Sunday, Rodgers will face a Chicago defense that gives up the fourth-most total yards in the NFL, almost 390 per game.

The Packers are 7-6-1 while Chicago is 8-7. A Packers' victory would give Green Bay the division title and a home Wild Card game. A Bears' victory would give Chicago those same spoils.

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - About one of every six state government employees were given bonuses and merit pay raises this year.

FOX 11 found that 6,300 workers were given bonuses and merit pay hikes totaling $14 million. A year ago, about 1,800 state workers received $6 million in extra money.

UW-Madison police detectives were given one-time bonuses of $6,900 which represented about 11 percent of their salaries. A deputy health services administrator was given an hourly raise of seven percent.

The Corrections Department gave out the most bonuses, with 1,300-plus workers getting averages of $750 each. The health services agency gave out the most in bonus money, around $2.2 million.

Republican Governor Scott Walker said the state should find a way to reward employees who save tax dollars, provide better quality service, and do more with less.

State employees who didn't get bonuses still received one percent raises, the state's first general pay hike since 2008.

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - Forecasters have downgraded the heavy snow predictions for the southern third of Wisconsin.

Up to nine inches were forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday -- but the National Weather Service says 3 to 6 inches is the most that can be expected south of a line from Milwaukee to Madison to Sauk City.

Places just north of that line could get a-half to two inches. In southwest Wisconsin, the Weather Service says the bulk of the snow will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday -- just in time to make things slippery for New Year's Eve celebrations.

Winter weather advisories will stretch until 6 a.m Wednesday.

It's supposed to stay dry in northern Wisconsin -- but revelers there will pay for it with continued sub-zero temperatures.

Hayward expects an overnight low of 27-below. The Wausau and Green Bay regions could get down to 10-below. Wind chill advisories were in effect until noon Tuesday in much of the north, with wind chills getting down to 40-below near Lake Superior.

It's about 10 degrees colder than expected in parts of the north Tuesday morning. Hayward was down to minus-21, and Siren minus-20 at 6 a.m. Superior had the most brutal wind chills, at minus-30.
