GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The Green Bay Metropolitan Area’s jobless rate increased in June while the area added 3,300 new jobs.

A household survey reported a 6.5 percent unemployment in June, a three-tenths of a percent increase from May. It's a half a percent improvement over last June.

Tourism related businesses accounted for a large number of the jobs addes, with 1,300, followed by 900 in manufacturing, 400 jons reported among mostly temp service agencues, and 200 jobs in construction.

Department of Workforce Development Office of Economic Advisors Labor Market Analyst Jeff Sachse says the rise in the unemployment rate was mainly due to the seasonal influx of college and high school students looking for work.

The Green Bay Metropolitan Area is Brown, Kewaunee and Oconto Counties.

Monthly jobs data is preliminary and at a local numbers are not seasonally adjusted.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) -The new plaza area dedicated to the Packers in downtown Green Bay is under construction, but already changes are coming.

Packers Heritage Trail President Cliff Christl says they are doubling the number of statues to six.

Two of the new additions will be double statues involving kids, with Clarke Hinkle holding a boy's hand and Bart Starr signing an autograph for a girl.

A sixth statue is still to be decided.

The three original statues include George Whitney Calhoun, Johnny Blood, Paul Hornung. The Hinkle and Starr statues will come after September's grand opening and will be finished by November.

Packers pictures and history will provide a backdrop along with a goal post at the corner of Cherry Street and Washington.

The Packers Heritage Trail includes 22 plaques, all but one in the downtown, so the plaza will be another draw to the area.

There is no official name for the plaza area, it’s being erected partly to recognize sponsors who have made the Packers landmark history trail possible.

The plaza’s grand opening is September 14th, a day before the season home opener at Lambeau Field

Opening for Medical College of Wisconsin in Green Bay announced

DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) - Officials with the Medical College of Wisconsin says it will welcome the first students to its new Green Bay program in the summer of 2015.

The college will utilize classrooms at the brand new science center on the St. Norbert College campus in De Pere, along with space at Bellin College in Green Bay.

Thursday morning, the Medical College said it would wait until 2016 to start classes in Wausau – so area residents can first get a look at how the school’s other graduates perform.

The new facilities were developed after the state’s Hospital Association warned in 2011 that Wisconsin would have a severe shortage of doctors by 2030 unless more are trained.

CEO John Raymond said Medical College students from the Milwaukee and Green Bay campuses would perform clinical work at hospitals in central Wisconsin and Marshfield Clinic in the year before Wausau opens. Raymond says it will show, “a presence and a commitment to the community.”

Officials said the delay would also provide more planning time for the central Wisconsin facility – which will have both classes and office space at North-central Technical College and Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

Raymond expects the first Wausau class to have 15 to 25 students, who would complete their residencies at area medical facilities. They would get three-year general medical degrees, then work in specialty fields during their residencies.

Deans for both the Wausau and Green Bay facilities will be announced this fall. Students will be recruited starting next year.

ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) - More than a year-and-a-half in the making, officials finally opened the doors to Wisconsin's third Cabela's store to the public Thursday.

It's the start of a weekend kickoff for the 100,000 square foot space featuring giveaways, outdoor celebrities and family events.

Customers began lining up around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday to be the first through the doors following Thursday's ceremonial ribbon cutting.

The Titletown District-based store is a next generation design, featuring outdoor products, a mountain replica, hundreds of museum-quality wildlife displays, an aquarium and indoor archery range and gun library, a bargain cave, along with a deli and fudge shop.

Officials say for the first time, this store will have a Wisconsin Sportsman's Hall of Fame showcasing trophy animal mounts and other memorabilia honoring the state's outdoor heritage.

Store officials estimate between 6,000 and 7,000 customers enter their stores each day, but this kickoff weekend may top that. They expect a big bump from the start of training camp for the Green Bay Packers on Friday.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) -The Official Packers station in Green Bay is no longer being broadcast on Time Warner Cable after terms of a new contract could not be reached before a midnight Wednesday deadline.

NBC 26 WGBA-TV is owned by Journal Communications, which also owns WTMJ in Milwaukee and numerous other TV stations across the nation whose channels have gone black on Time Warner.

WGBA General Manager Joe Poss says a contract extension was offered on Wednesday.

“Putting contract extensions in there, so it doesn’t spill out to the viewers is very common, and Time Warner decided not to, so that is why we are not on,” Poss said during a phone conversation Thursday.

NBC 26 broadcasts the Packers preseason games that start in a couple weeks.

“We are working hard, I have a conference call every single day to try and resolve this, but we do have to make smart businesses decisions,” Poss said.

Time Warner says Journal is asking for a 200 percent increase in fees.

“If you take a penny and you double it, it’s a 100 percent increase…I think the real number we need to look at is a half a penny a day in a monthly contract for a subscriber of Time Warner,” Poss said.

Poss highlights other alternatives to watch NBC 26, like the traditional TV antenna, Dish Network, DirecTV, or AT&T Uverse.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Green Bay Packers fans from across the country have flocked to Ray Nitschke Field Friday for the start of training camp.

For many, it's an annual tradition that brings dreams of Super Bowl glory.

The first whistle for practice blew at 8:20 a.m. The team practiced in shells - not in full pads.

Many fans have to get to Ray Nitschke Field early to locate the best spot on the bleachers or to find the best place along the fence.

For a complete list of practice times, click here.

One surprise Friday was that second-year corner Casey Hayward was not practicing – and neither was corner Davon House. The reasons were not immediately known.

Linebacker Jamari Lattimore also did not practice. He was reported as having a non-football illness.

Seven other players – including defensive end Mike Neal and running back DuJuan Harris – failed their physicals Thursday, and are on the team’s physically unable to perform list.

Harris is getting over lung surgery to contain a cyst. It was not immediately known what happened to Neal, who practiced at outside linebacker during some of the Packers’ off-season workouts.

The team will continue to have early morning practices for most of the next week. The Packers’ annual Family Night is a week from Saturday night at Lambeau Field.

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - A growing trend in the workplace has arrived in Appleton.

It's called coworking, and one of the latest spaces available to business people in the Fox Valley is the Avenue HQ in downtown Appleton.

Financial consultant Mike Paschen tells FOX 11 he tried to work from home.

"I have three kids, so, they can distract me pretty darn quick, if they're in the mood," said Paschen.

Pachen says he visited other places.

"The only option would be something like a coffee shop. That adds distraction as well too," said Paschen.

For $75 a month, the Avenue HQ offers a business setting for freelancers, remote workers, and those just trying to get some work done.

Matthew Straub opened the coworking space Monday. He says an open house with free services this week attracted 75 people.

"A place that people have access to where they have coworkers again, they have that kind of social atmosphere," Matthew Straub, Avenue HQ co-founder, told FOX 11.

Appleton city leaders say this new venture is good for downtown development.

"This is a good stepping stone. To come together and look at downtown Appleton as a place to grow their business. And that could lead to a storefront, could lead to an office front," Jennifer Stephany, executive director of Downtown Appleton, Inc., told FOX 11.

Statistics indicate there are more than 800 coworking spaces nationwide, including Green Bay, Milwaukee, and Madison.

Clarion Hotel decision could jeopardize $35M renovation of Hotel Northland

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Tuesday's Green Bay City Council decision on the Clarion Hotel could jeopardize an estimated $35 million renovation of the Hotel Northland in downtown.

Northland developer Frantz-Hobart says the city’s decision on a proposal for the Clarion is a cause of concern because when they started their plans nine months ago, they were under the assumption that the Clarion would stay as a mid-tier hotel, not become a new four star hotel.

The Northland is expected to be a five-star hotel.

CEO Mike Frantz says their studies show the downtown can’t support that many premium rooms.

“It’s directly in contradiction to what the strategy was, “ Frantz said.

Frantz says they don’t want to sway the council’s decision.

“Will we pull out and take our ball and walk away, that’s not what we are about, we certainly don’t want any of our comments to be a threat,” Frantz said.

Frantz says they have already had to delay the start of closing on the Northland property by a month because of Edgewater Resources coming in at the 11th hour.

Closing proceedings were supposed to start in mid-July.

The city council will decide on a $4 million renovation of the Clarion Hotel or a new 16-story $33.5 million hotel with top floor condominiums, a marina, restaurant and bar, and an all day spa on the site of the Clarion.

Edgewater Resources presented their plans at an informal meeting last Monday.  American Hospitality Management, the current operator of the Clarion Hotel, will present their plans today at 4 p.m. at city hall.

Tuesday's decison will be close vote.

Numerous aldermen have already expressed their hesitation about choosing Edgewater over AHM because of the perceived risk in losing the developer for the Hotel Northland. A handful of others are supportive of Edgewater's plans.

EAA's AirVenture takes flight this week in Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - Hundreds of pilots flew into Oshkosh Sunday – and thousands more are expected Monday, as the week-long Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture Show begins.

Many pilots were angered by a fee to help pay for air traffic controllers that the Federal Aviation Administration used to provide for free. This year, the FAA charged the EAA almost a half-million dollars to provide 87 controllers for this week’s Oshkosh events.

It equals about $45 for each plane that goes in and out of Wittman Airport. The cost of the controllers is part of the federal fuel tax for general aviation – and the pilots say the EAA is being taxed twice. The organization says the controller fees will cut into the donations they’re able to make with the show’s proceeds.

The EAA has asked a federal appeals court in Chicago to overturn the fee. A decision is not expected until after the show.

The congressman who represents Oshkosh, Republican Tom Petri of Fond du Lac, has asked U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx to overturn the EAA charge. Senate Republican Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma tells the Web site Politico that he spoke with Foxx after a committee meeting last week – and Foxx said he’s thinking about dropping the charge.

Petri says the FAA’s fee is, “misguided and short sighted.”

Over a half-million people are expected to attend the AirVenture Show, which features numerous forums, displays, air shows, and other performances.

Green Bay police union, city go to arbitration Monday

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - An arbitrator is expected to hear both sides in the Green Bay police union contract stalemate Monday at City Hall.

The police union and city have been unable to agree on a new contract since the current deal expired at the end of 2011.

The first part of the dispute is the length of a deal. Attorneys for the city want a four-year contract, while the union only wants a two-year deal due to an uncertain economy.

The police union also wants to cap retirement contributions at 6.6 percent, while the city wants cops to accept any increases other city employees face. The union is also requesting pay raises that are intended to offset rising pension costs. They want those hikes to start this year, but the city wants to delay those raises until 2014.Health and dental insurance premiums is also a sticking point. The union and city have agreed to the same percentage, but the police want it capped at current rates. Increases in future years would be the city's responsibility.

FOX 11 reports the arbitrator is not expected to issue a decision until a later date.

FBI Moneypak Virus warning from Brown County Sheriff's

BELLEVUE, WI (WTAQ) - Brown County Sheriff's are warning residents about a computer scam that infected a person in Ledgeview over the weekend.

Deputies responded to a report of a possible computer scam on Saturday.

The person told officers that she attempted to log on to her computer but the screen appeared to be locked. There was also a website that stated "FBI - Cybercrime Division."

This screen demanded that a fine of $300 be paid within 72 hours to prevent prosecution. It also appears that this virus was able to take a snapshot from the computers' built-in webcam of the inside of their home.

This virus also attempts to obtain passwords and any other financial information you may have on your computer.

According to a Brown County Sheriff's Department release:

"The FBI Moneypak virus (FBI virus, Citadel Reveton) is ransomware disguised as the FBI that uses Trojans (Trojan.Ransomlock.R) to lock computer systems. The FBI virus alleges the computer has been involved in illegal activity (cyber crime) by the FBI (downloaded or distributed copyrighted material or viewed child pornography, etc.).

It demands a penalty fine of $100 or $200 to be paid in order to unlock the computer system within the allotted time of 72 hours by use of Moneypak cards (Ultimate Game Card Virus, Ukash Virus).

The FBI Moneypak ransomware virus also states on the fake FBI screen that you (the computer owner) may see jail time if the fine is not paid in time.

If you are infected with ransomware such as the FBI virus, your personal and private material and computer system functionality is already at a very high risk. If the infected computer is powered ON and connected to the internet Trojans have complete control of the computer and every piece of stored data.

FBI Moneypak Ransomware involves tricking you by displaying deceptive pop-up ads that may appear as regular Windows notifications with links which look like buttons reading Yes and No. No matter which "button" that you click on, a download starts, installing FBI Moneypak Ransomware on your system."

The Brown County Sheriff's Department is urging citizen's to immediately delete any incoming e-mails from any unknown source. If you believe your computer has already been infected by this or any similar virus, shut down and unplug your computer. You may also want to consider consulting with a commercial computer expert.
