Green Bay police encourage residents to report crimes online

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Green Bay Police are encouraging the public to use their online crime reporting system.

This service is intended to provide residents an easy option to report certain non-emergency crimes.

Since April of 2013, the GBPD has received over 80 online crime reports.

"A small theft, or a criminal damage, where they don't have any suspects," Lt. Kevin Warych says these are the types of crimes that can be reported. "A local business may report vandalism or graffiti."

Warych says it's effective in that residents can dictate how they want to handle the crime being reported.

"They can fill out the online report on their cell phone, or any other electronic device," says Warych. "We want to encourage people to report crime, because this tool gives them the ability to report a crime when they otherwise may not have because they didn't want to meet with an officer."

If you choose to use the online reporting system, the report will be followed up on within 24 hours by a Community Service Intern or an officer.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Folks in northwest Wisconsin will get relief Thursday night from a heat wave that’s been around since last weekend.

The rest of us, though, will have to wait until Friday night for things to cool down.

The National Weather Service says a cold front will arrive Thursday evening in northwest Wisconsin, and will sweep southward across the state Friday.

Until then, afternoon highs in the 90’s and heat indices in the 100’s will continue to be the norm.

Boscobel in Grant County had the week’s highest heat index Wednesday at 109.

Green Bay set a new record Wednesday for the warmest overnight low for the date at 75. Milwaukee and Wausau tied similar records.

Madison had just under an inch of rain in a half-hour late Wednesday afternoon.

Spotty thunderstorms are in the forecast statewide for Thursday.

Rusty Kapela of the Weather Service calls this a normal summer heat wave – nothing like the gripping heat of a year ago, when it was in the 90’s for over 20 days. Still, officials say folks should not brush this off.

Milwaukee officials urge people to check on neighbors who are elderly or live alone – don’t leave kids and pets alone in a hot car – and find public places to cool down if necessary.

Heat advisories continue until 9 p.m. Thursday in northwest Wisconsin, until 5 p.m. Friday in central and northeast areas, and until 7 p.m. Friday in the rest of the state.

Bridge repairs in De Pere underway

DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) - Crews with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is working on repairs to a De Pere bridge damaged by a truck last September.

DOT officials say the truck was too tall and struck the underside of the bridge, damaging four girders that support the bridge surface.

Work on the project, which began July 8, will continue through mid-October.

WisDOT says the bridge is structurally sound right now, but time and exposure to the elements could weaken the girders. That’s why the DOT decided now is the time to replace three girders and apply a protective surface coat to the other.

During the repair work, there will be some traffic impacts. They are as follows:

  • Night closures of U.S. 41 northbound and Scheuring Road. Traffic will be diverted up and down the ramps of the Scheuring Road interchange.
  • Eastbound Scheuring Road reduced to one lane for duration of project.
  • Westbound lane of Scheuring Road closed for five consecutive days towards the end of the project.
  • Lane closures on US 41 and Scheuring Road.

Insurance is covering the repair, meaning it will not impact taxpayers.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The calendar may say July, and you may be sweating in this heat, but officials with the Salvation Army of Brown County are hoping to bring out some Christmas cheer next week.

The Salvation Army is kicking off "Christmas in July" on Monday, July 22. The Red Kettles and bell ringers will be out to help raise money for the need-based community programs.

"This is the first year that the Salvation Army of Brown County is hosting Christmas in July," says county coordinator Captain Ken Shiels. "A number of other Army locations have brought out their Red Kettles during July and we thought it was a good idea given the ongoing need in the community."

During their most recent Red Kettle Christmas campaign, the group raised nearly $1.113 million, falling short of their $1.2 million goal.

"The need is still there in the community, so anything we can raise during our Christmas in July efforts will help us deliver the programs to meet that need," says Shiels. "It's also a great opportunity for people to ring bells while enjoying some nice summer weather."

Festival Foods locations in Green Bay, Suamico and De Pere will host the kettles from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. from July 22 to 28 with the Festival clerks donning the familiar bell-ringing aprons.

There is also a list of area businesses which have agreed to match the donations:

  • Associated Bank - July 22
  • Schreiber Foods - July 23
  • Broadway Automotive - July 24
  • Wisconsin Public Service Foundation - July 25
  • Cellcom - July 26
  • Fox Communities Credit Union - July 27

Duck Creek Golf Center will also help out with the fundraising effort by holding a Driving Range Challenge from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. from July 22 to 28. Participants make a donation of a certain amount and get 3 balls to attempt to land one into the big red kettle 100 yards away. Prizes are given to those who get a hole in one.

Culvers will also host the red kettles at its four Green Bay area locations, while donating 10 percent of all sales from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on July 23 to the campaign.

Anyone interest in ringing bells at one of the Festival Foods locations during Christmas in July can sign up here.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - After two years of construction, Lambeau Field’s newest addition of 7,000 seats is complete.

The Packers cut the ribbon on the new south end zone and Shopko Gate Thursday.

Packers President Mark Murphy says the new expansion makes Lambeau the 3rd largest stadium in the NFL with 80,750 seats.

Murphy says the expansion allowed for 3,800 fans to come off the decades-long waiting list for season tickets. The average wait time was 30 years.

Hundreds of new season ticket holders gathered Thursday to see the ribbon cutting and to see their new seats.

Norma Kuputa from Salem has been on the waiting list for 33 years.

”This is awesome, these seats are the best, I didn’t think I was going to live to see this moment," Kuputa said.

Around 1,500 current season ticket holders took the option of relocating to the new section.

Chuck Veil and his wife were one of those who relocated to the 700 Level. Previously, they were in the bowl along an aisle.

“People were coming up and down, we came to watch football not party, so I don’t think we are going to have that trouble up here; we just love it, “ Veil said.

The new south end zone section is accessible through the new Shopko Gate and includes the Miller Lite Lounge and Party Deck, the Terrace Suites, the Champions Club, along with the south end zone roof top viewing platform.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Most of Wisconsin can expect one more day of temperatures in the 90’s, before a nearly week-long heat wave finally ends.

The National Weather Service said a cold front was heading into northwest Wisconsin during the night, bringing spotty thunderstorms and cooler readings.

A heat advisory expired Thursday night in the northwest, but it still steamy overnight. It was 83 at 3 a.m. Friday in Eau Claire, Menomonie, and Osceola. Kenosha and Racine had 82.

For the second day in a row, Milwaukee set a record for the warmest overnight low – 79 early Thursday. Wausau set a similar record with 74.

Thursday’s heat index hit 110 near La Crosse.

Forecasters say the cold front will reach southern Wisconsin late Friday. Until then, heat advisories continue until 5 p.m. in north central and northeast areas, and until 7 p.m. in the south.

Friday night’s lows could drop into the 50’s in the north – where it might not get above 70 Saturday. We might not see 80 again until Monday and Tuesday.

LA CROSSE, WI (WTAQ) - Thunderstorms are moving across Wisconsin’s mid-section, in advance of a cold front that’s supposed to bring the state’s week-long heat wave to an end Friday night.

A line of storms rumbled through the Wausau region during the 6 a.m. hour.

The National Weather Service did not issue any warnings, and there were no immediate reports of storm damage.

Forecasters say severe weather is possible in the Madison and Milwaukee regions Friday afternoon and early evening as the cold front moves southward.

The storms carried winds of 58 miles an hour in Rochester Minnesota. The Weather Service in La Crosse says up to a half-inch of rain could fall in a one-hour time period in that region.

Highs in the 80’s and 90’s are again predicted for Friday throughout Wisconsin. The heat index is supposed to be a few degrees cooler, after 110 near Onalaska Thursday – the highest recorded in the state this week.

Once the front goes through, Friday night’s lows will get down to the 50’s and 60’s.

Saturday’s highs will be around 20 degrees cooler than Friday, in the 60’s and 70’s. Rain is possible again on Sunday, and officials say it could be Monday before 80 degree weather returns.

Nationwide outbreak of parasite causes prolonged "food poisoning" like symptoms

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - An unusual multi-state outbreak of a microscopic parasite is causing prolonged “food poisoning” like symptoms for a handful of Wisconsin residents, including one in Brown County.  The cyclospora parasite has effected around 200 people nationwide, a majority in Iowa, and health officials have still to determine its point of origin.  “In the past it’s been associated with contaminated produce or contaminated water ingestion,”  said State Public Health Veterinarian Dr. Jim Kazmierczak. The illness is treatable, but it could last for months if it’s not treated.

The parasite incubation period is normally a week.

Kazmierczak says everyone should take an extra precaution and thoroughly wash any produce.
