APPLETON, WI (WTAQ)- With all the Easter activity this weekend, veterinarians are reminding pet owners to keep an eye on their pets.

Dr. Sanjay Jain of Apple Valley Veterinary Clinic says Easter provides many dangers to animals.

"A lot of people like to use the Easter grass, and if cats or small dogs get a hold of that, it can cause their intestines to bunch up and that would require emergency surgery.

Doctor Jain also warns of another danger that is sometimes overlooked.

"Easter Lilly Flowers are toxic and can cause kidney disease to occur.

Chocolate is also dangerous for animals.

Doctor Jain said one thing that sometime gets missed, is that pets can get stressed out with lots of people coming and going.

He said it may be best to keep your pets in their own rooms away from the group.

SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ)- Ice fishermen are enjoying their final days on the ice.

On the waters of Shawano Lake, ice fishermen holding on to hopes that season will last a little longer.   "We haven't had fishing in March in three years."  Cory Kuhn of Kuhn's Bait and Tackle in Shawano tells Fox 11 that there is still ice to fish on.  "There is a lot of ice yet, about 18 to 20 inches yet, but the shorelines are starting to go away a little bit."   Ice fishermen realize that can change fast, and their days of ice fishing this year are numbered.   "I think it is probably going to be my last time, but we will see what happens with the weather," said John Hoffman of De Pere.  Even though open water fishing is around the corner, not everyone is looking forward to that, so the longer ice fishing goes, the better.   "I don't do much fishing during the summer, but I live for ice fishing," said Mike DeBroux, Gresham.  For now it may just be smaller fish being caught, but it's still a day on the ice.

GREENLEAF, WI (WTAQ- WLUK)-A golf course restaurant in Brown County is reaching out to the family of a missing teen.

Last weekend, 17-year-old Reedsville High School student Jevon Lemke went missing in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

During the Good Friday fish fry at Wander Springs Golf Course, donations for the family were being collected.

Lemke's mother Carrie Holton said the community support has helped her get through rough days one week after the Reedsville High School student went missing in the water in Alabama.

"It's amazing, I would have never expected this type of response," Holton told FOX 11.

The response was big, as many heard about it and decided to make dinner plans at the restuarant to donate to the cause.

Lemke worked at the golf course for two seasons.

"I'm not from here and I've not been here long, for them to care as much as they do, that tells you that Jevon has impacted this community as well as Brillion and surrounding areas," said Holton.

You can still make donations by contacting Wander Springs Golf Course at 1-800-465-3499.

Bay Beach Renovation In Council's Hands

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ)- The future of a beach at Bay Beach is in the hands of the city council tonight.

Green Bay has received the green light in the form of a permit from the DNR, and Mayor Jim Schmitt feels the beach would be good for the city.

“It's just something that we don't have in this area, you go to Two Rivers, Kewaunee, or Door County,” said Schmitt. “We'll have that here and we're very excited about that."   Schmitt says the plan has been met with questions, but in the end, feels it will make a positive difference in Green Bay.

“I just think if you talk about what people look back and say what were the significant changes, you look at the City Deck or you look at Schreiber, this beach is going to be one of them,” said Schmitt.

The idea of restoring the 1,000 foot beach, building a 450 foot pier, boardwalk, bathhouse and new parking lots has had some support, but Alderman Chris Wery says there are still some big questions.

“It's great news that the DNR is saying hey we think it's safe and your plan is good,” said Green Bay Alderman Chris Wery. “I want to look at the particulars on the water quality to make sure we're moving ahead with something we think that people would want to use.”

A three year study has shown that the water is safe for swimming, but E-Coli and algae blooms will likely close the beach on some days. There is a concern on how to monitor the water and how comfortable people will be swimming there.

Schmitt says the price tag is $7 million dollars, but it planned to be paid for with fundraising, grants and borrowing.

“The beauty of this enhancement is it's going to all be paid for by the profits of Bay Beach, no tax dollars into this,” said Schmitt.

If approved the plan calls for fundraising, grants and borrowing money to pay for it.

MADISON, WI (WTAQ)- A big to determine the future of the State Treasurer is just a day away.

Former State Treasurer Jack Voight it pushing for a "no" vote for the question of eliminating his former position.

"We would lose the checks and balances. We would lose the fiscal voice and watchdog for Wisconsin citizens.

Voight says that may be just the beginning if the vote is yes.

"The next two offices will be on the ballot as well," Voight says. "That is the Secretary of State Office as well as the Constitutional Agency of Public Land."

Current State Treasurer Matt Adamczyk says the duties of the position have been shifted to other departments.

Voight says State Treasurer Matt Adamczyk is not taking the right approach.

"First of all I think Mr. Adamczyk should have fired himself initially, because he said it does not do anything while he is taking a salary for the last three years."

He also argues that eliminating the position goes against the constitution.

"It's on the ballot, and I hope they vote no."

SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ)- Owners of a soon-to-be brewery in Shawano are finding a fun way to raise money to keep a historical element of their building in place.

A marquee on the front of the future Stubborn Brothers Brewery is a visual reminder of the 1900's on Main Street in Shawano. It is something that the Shawano Community would like to keep in tact.

"People wanted us to save a building."

As they did with other aspects of the planning process, Aaron and Erik Gilling asked the community what they wanted done.

"99 percent of people that responded said let's keep the marquee," Aaron Gilling said.

However, Gilling said that comes with an expensive price tag.

"The cost is $25-50 thousand dollars, and that is not in the budget."

To come up with the money, the Gilling Brothers are using the history of the building to their advantage, offering tours of the building this weekend for small donations.   Gilling says it is a win-win as some of the history that they uncovered when renovating the old Crescent Pitcher show, is worth seeing.

The tours will the last chance to see elements of the original building that will be covered up in the construction process. For some, it will be a trip back in time to what they remember whiles others will see the historical elements for the first and only time.

"You are not going to be able to see some of the original rooms where people got changed for vaudeville theater. It is going to be kind of our last hoorah to show people."

Gilling says that is just one example.

From the day they purchased the building, the Gilling brothers have asked for community imput. Giving the community what they want is the key driving force in the project.

"We want this to be a community staple were people say we helped that, we did that. All of this money is going to go towards renovating the front of the building or the facade."

The tours will be Saturday and Sunday. The tours are being given in groups, so those interested should just show up for a tour. A $20 dollar donation is requested, but any amount will be accepted.

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - One Fox Valley police department is reporting more and more cars being stolen. And it's turning to social media to try and get residents to turn the trend around.

Your car could be the target of thieves.

Oshkosh Police officers have seen a rise in thefts in the city this year.

Last week a pickup truck was stolen from Washington County, the driver ended up crashing into a home in Oshkosh. Police say he then stole another car.

"Many times these types of crimes occur its because the opportunity is there and someone takes advantage of that.

Lt. Andy Lecker with Oshkosh police tells FOX 11 if residents can take the opportunity away from car thieves they can help prevent the thefts from happening.

"Many of our vehicle thefts are because the keys were left in the vehicle and someone simply got in the vehicle, took the keys and started and drove off."

Oshkosh police is in the midst of a social media campaign on Facebook urging residents to lock up their vehicles and their homes.

All messages urge residents make it a nightly routine, using the hashtag 9 p.m. routine.

"Very, very, rarely do we have stolen autos that are not taken because they acquired the keys somehow."

Most to the thefts take place with keys left in cars on the street or in driveways.

But Lecker says cars in garages should be locked too.

"I would still recommend if you keep your car in though garage you still take the keys out of it because people do break into garages periodically."

Police believe the spike in car thefts is happening in other communities across the state as well.

DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) - A new study shows Wisconsin companies are using wellness programs to improve employee health.

One of those companies is De Pere-based Belmark.

They have a workout room and exercise equipment for staff and their families.

They also have the YMCA. Trainers from the Y go to Belmark and lead classes several times week.

"Over the last couple of years, companies have really been putting a significant emphasis on employee health."

Nick Rozek runs the Y's corporate wellness outreach.

They design programs to work with companies and their employees. It leads to healthier staff and a more family-like atmosphere.

All of that sounds good to Karl Schmidt, Belmark CEO.

"People are healthy together. You see that in society getting healthy together. I see that all through Belmark."

Jennifer Valentine has been working at Belmark for eight years.

She takes advantage of the company workout room and exercise equipment. But is also an active participant in the classes led by Y.

"It's been an added benefit to Belmark because it helps a total body workout."

She also says taking a break during the day to go to the Y's 'on-site' exercise class helps her feel more productive when she goes back to her desk.

Rozek says each program is tailored to the employees of the company. It's not a 'one size fits all' workout.

"That could really include different forms of cardiovascular training, a lot of really good strength work."

The Y's Corporate Wellness program also aims to encourage healthier lifestyles to employees outside of work.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ)- The next weather system is coming in Monday and will stick around for awhile.

Timm Uhlmann of the National Weather Service in Green Bay says this one is on the larger size.

"Probally going to be one of our higher events for the entire season."

About 8-10 inches of wet snow could fall in the Green Bay area.

Fluffier snow is expected further south.

The snow is expected to fall throughout the day on Tuesday, and could impact travel both in the morning and evening.

"Travel impact is a strong focus. Both morning and evening travel could be impacted."

For the most part, the area has dodged the snow bullett this season.

"The past three weeks, we have not really been seeing anything, but that is because the East Coast has been getting hammered and we have been sitting under the high pressure system, but now I guess it is our turn.

The early indications are for more snow possible next week.

DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ)- The upcoming deer hunt is just over 7 months away, but the work to shape the season starts now.

That offically begins with the public getting a chance to weigh in to their Deer Advisory Council.

In Door County, last year was a successful season, but Council President Dick Baudhuin is still looking for input.

"I think what's happening is the hunters are recognizing that the population is there."

This year, Door County hunters may get the opportunity to receive five free antlerless permits for every license purchased."

"Hunters are more willing to purchase antlerless deer," Baudhuin told Fox 11. "Are we where we need to be? No. But I think the trend is there."

Also this year, council have the ability to extend the archery season.

DNR Wildlife Biologist says input can be made through their website.

"You can select a county that you either hunt in, live in, or recreate in. You can provide comments in regards to what that county has recommended."

Baudhuin says the input however is what is missing.

"We're not hearing from the other people that are impacted."

Councils will forward their final recommendations to the State Natural Resources Board for approval.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ)- A YMCA sponsored Youth Camp near Suring is doing all they can to help send kids to camp.

With hopes of leveling the playing field, Camp Unahliya Executive Director Max Clark says the goal is to make sure that at risk youth get the experience and benefits that camp brings.

"We raise funds to help that family out and we stretch those dollars out as much as we can."

Without that fundraising, Clark says these kids would not be able to afford to go.

He says the camp is not just about time away from home, but what the troubled youth learn while they are there.

"We really want to get into their lives, and speak some postive values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibilty and hopefully have some life changing events with them.

The Greater Green Bay YMCA camp applies for grants each year and then fundraiser to match that amount.

"That is enough to send 60 at-risk kids from Green Bay to camp, and even outfit them with all the gear they need to."

Clark says that includes backpacks, sleeping bags, and transportation.

"It is really good for them to go to camp. It is good for them to be away from their parents to form independence and that postive character."

.A large fundraising dinner is taking place April 12th at Hinterland.

Long Day Ahead For Public Works

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ)- It's another day of snow fighting for Green Bay Public Works.

Public Works Director Steve Griener says the amount of snow falling does not concern him or his staff, but how long the snow storm lasts does cause a need to schedule carefully.

"It is only safe to have people in plowing equipment for a certain period of time and then you have to get them home and get them rested."

Griener say duration is a concern no matter what time of year it is.

He says the goal is to move people around so the work does not stop.

Griener says while it may seem like a burden for many, his staff is prepped to make everyday life as easy and safe as possible today.

"I am biased. I will put my staff against any staff in the U.S. any day anytime."

Highly traveled roads will be the priority today and will have repeat maintenance, while the hope is to only have to plow residential streets one time.

Griener says his crew is ready to fight what mother nature brings, but they are putting their battle plan in place and calling audible's as the storm continues.

"To put a plan in place and execute it without tweaking it would be more of the exception than the rule."

He says April snow is not always the worse because the sun and pavement temperatures take care of the snow faster.
