ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ)- Police cars in Brown County were filled with groceries Friday.

Pick N' Save teamed up with police to "Fill the Cruiser" with food that customers purchased for donating to the New Community Shelter.

Customers buy the bags in amounts of $10  dollars or $5 dollars.

Ashwaubenon Public Safety, Green Bay Police and Brown County Sheriff's Office competed to see who could collect more, but Captain Jody Crocker of the Ashwaubenon Public Safety says even the department that collects the most is not the real winners.

"In the end the community and the people in need are the real winners."

Pick N' Save in Ashwaubenon went through over 600 bags in the first three hours.

Jon Soffa, Pick N' Save Store Manager in Ashwaubenon said people stepped up big.

"It's awesome, everyone needs food and we are able to help those who need the most this holiday season."

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ)- One person is still missing after falling through the ice just before midnight Friday.

Green Bay Metro Fire Department was called out to East River near Quincy Street at 11:32pm.

A rescue operation was underway for 40 minutes, but was then stopped and will resume as a recovery operation this morning.

Rescue officials say the 40 minute window was the available time for survivability.

Footprints leading to a hole in the ice were identified by those on scene.

Fire officials say temperatures have not been cold enough for solid ice development and people should stay off the ice.

ASHWAUBENON (WTAQ-WLUK) -- Step inside Bay Park Square mall, in Ashwaubenon, and you'll find at least two types of people, those who are done Christmas shopping and those who will tell you, there's still time.

"For me, I Christmas shop early. He's a procrastinator," said Erin Hoefler.

"Yeah, I wait," said Tim Lyon.

"He shops late because he wants to tell everyone what he got them for Christmas," Hoefler said.

"Yeah, just finishing up right now, maybe two more items," Lyon added.

Not everyone at the mall was there to shop. A few Salvation Army bell ringers, asked people to give.

"There you go," a man said as he put money into the red kettle.

In another part of the mall parents introduced their children to Santa.

As the camera flashed, some parents also held up their cellphones and ask their children for a big smile.

After the photo, Santa gave a little girl a hat and candy cane.

As more shoppers headed through the mall, we found a grandma picking up a gift.

"I'm getting my granddaughter something and I think I'll find it right here at Hallmark." said Sharri Hintz.

When asked if she enjoys Christmas shopping, Hintz said, "I'm glad it's just about done,."

With Christmas a few days away, shoppers also shared what they enjoy most about the holiday.

"I'd just have to say the holiday spirit," Lyon said.

"The decorations," Hintz said.

"Just family, getting things for people and the looks on their faces when they open up the present and they got what they really wanted," Hoefler said.

Director of Public Afffairs Aaron Popkey said he does not see the Friday's events being an issue.

"Speaking with all the parties that helped us operate on game day, there are no issues there or anything like that."

Police arrived on scene within minutes of when a former contracted food service employee attempted to run down a former co-worker with his vehicle.

Popkey thanked law enforcement for their quick response Friday and efforts to keep everyone safe on gameday and everyday.

"I appreciate their great help and coorporation and they do a great job keeping us all safe at Lamebeau Field."

Many fans at Lambeau Field Friday witnessed Friday's scene.

John Schuster said his stop at Lambeau Field left him in the middle of a dangerous situation.

"Just as we got here, it was like a turmoil. The first thing we see is a car backed up ontop of another one, and so we said something is going on."

Schuster said the scene escalated quickly.

"It was so active that all of the sudden you had to start looking out for police cars."

Fans that were in the attrium or Packers Pro Shop did not notice anything on the other side of Lambeau Field.

Packer personnel said they did not evacuate the entire building due to the scene ending so quickly, and being far away from a majority of fans.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - While Christmas may bring family and fun for many, not everyone is feeling the Holiday spirit this year.

Kris Olson of NEW Community Shelter said that is the case for many of their homeless residents.

"We do experience some people not feeling the greatest right now because they are in our program, but we do try to make things special."

Olson said the community helps provide little gifts, but the staff provides the holiday spirit.

Staff will participate in games and fun on Christmas Eve.

Olson said the staff also provides the residents the support to continue improving their situations.

"Staff comes in an we make breakfest for them and we bring our families to make it as festive as we can for them."

Olson said allowing staff to bring their families gives staff the oppertunity to help out at the shelter, but not have to be away from their families for work.

Olson said it is also eye opening to family members that participate, and she remembers her first Christmas working at the shelter.

"We gave this man some white T-shirts for Christmas and he just stared at them and said he can't remember the last time he had a new clean white t-shirt."

Residents at NEW Community Shelter become part of a program with the ultimate goal of getting back in the world on their feet.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ)- It's the final day for the Salvation Army Christmas Campaign, and there is still more work to do.

"The Christmas campaign accounts for nearly two-thirds of our budget."

Nick Meisner of the Greater Green Bay Salvation Army says they are at about 75 percent of their goal heading into today, but there is still more work to be done with the Red Kettles.

Meisner says their are at about 55 percent of the Red Kettle goal, but have one more big day scheduled.

"You know putting a few quarters in, if you think that will not make a difference, you are incorrect."

Meisner says, they have faith that their goal of 1.1 million dollars will be met.

"Every single year we are completely floored by the support of the people in the Greater Green Bay area."

He added being a little short heading into home stretch is not unusual.

"We really see a big boost in the last two weeks of the campaign."

The money collected stays local.

Bell ringing will wrap up Saturday.

Packers blanked again

The Green Bay Packers lost season became even more despressing after they were shut out by division rival Minnesota 16-0 at Lambeau Field Saturday night in 10 degree temperatures.

The Vikings (12-3) put up 10 points in the first quarter on a Kai Forbath 49 yard field goal and a four yard touchdown pass from Case Keenum to Stefon Diggs.   That would be more than enough.

The Packer offense, led again by Brett Hundley, didn't cross midfield until late in the second quarter when a promising drive ended when Harrison Smith intercepted Hundley at the five yard line.

The Packers fizzled on three straight fourth down tries in the second half as the Vikings tacked on two more field goals.

Already missing Aaron Rodgers, the Packers had Davante Adams, Clay Matthews, Nick Perry, Damarious Randall and Jahri Evans on the inactive list.

The injuries kept piling up as Jason Spriggs suffered a signficant knee injury on the game's first offensive play.   The Packers also lost Jordy Nelson and Richard Rodgers to shoulder injuries, Aaron Jones left with a knee injury and Josh Jones also hurt his shoulder during the game.

The Packers (7-8) will finish up the regular season next Sunday against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

Keeping Those Healthy Resolutions

HOWARD, WI (WTAQ) - Christmas in the rearview mirror, the new year just days away. For some that means a resolution to get in better shape. But many fall short, giving up within weeks. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Kim Elsing is a personal trainer at the Greater Green Bay YMCA.

She says one big reason people don't follow through on the get in shape resolution is....

"If they don't get really specific about what actually means, what it is, and what that actually looks like."

Setting a realistic goal, how you're going to get there, and how long it will take.

A personal trainer or exercise group provides support like education and accountability. Elsing hears about it all the time...

"If it wouldn't;t have the appointment I wouldn't have come in. It's that accountability, it's kind of having some skin in the game because you're paying for a service and if you don't show up for it you're wasting your money."

Elsing adds there's times you might fail....and that's OK.

"and it's really not falling off the wagon that is going to be your demise. It's what you're going to do when you do fall off."

The Greater Green Bay YMCA is one place you can get solid information and support to help make sure your healthy 2018 resolution is a success.

Staying Active During Winter Months

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - A local doctor is encouraging folks to stay active during the winter months.

ThedaCare Family Physician Eric Smiltneek says there are number of cold-weather sports and activities for families to enjoy.

"Cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, and ice-skating.  We have a lot of areas where there are frozen ponds or skating venues."

Smiltneek notes there are also physical activities at home, such as video games that require movement and even kitchen dance parties.

"Start up the music, find something that the kids may like, set that up, sometimes set up a theme."

He says adults should spend 30 minutes a day doing activity that gets the heart rate up, with that doubling for kids.

"Some of the numbers that are most affected by exercise levels tend to look worse in February and March than they did in August and September."

Smiltneek also suggests checking local recreational facilities and gyms for indoor sports days/leagues.

Weekend Incident Prompts Ice Safety Reminders

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - A weekend incident is prompting safety reminders from a local company that helps recover vehicles that fall through the ice on frozen bodies of water.

Even though Lake Winnebago's ice is expected to reach the recommended 12 inch thickness for vehicles this weekend, Sunk Dive and Ice's Don Herman suggests avoiding local waters altogether this time of year.

"You've got the current in the river.  It never freezes, it's just like a stream.  Eventually it freezes, but the river is always unsafe.  There is never a good place to go in the wintertime."

If you do head out on the frozen waters, Herman has some advice.

"I tell everybody 'carry a whistle around your neck,' because if you put a whistle around your neck, go into the cold water, and lose your breath, you can still blow a whistle."

He also suggests carrying an ice picker.

Green Bay Police Lieutenant Steve Mahoney says a man fell through the ice near Quincy Street on Green Bay's East River late Friday night.

"The witnesses said they saw the guy in a hole in the ice, screaming for help.  They weren't able to get to him.  They saw the guy go down and not resurface."

The rescue efforts were called off after 40 minutes.

"Consulting with the fire personnel, I believe they said they don't know of anyone that's lasted longer than 40 minutes in cold water.  We do believe that the party passed away."

Mahoney says they don't know the victim's identity, with it possibly being a homeless person.

Recovery efforts were suspended Saturday.

Officers say it's possible the tires were flattened, causing sparks between the car's wheels and the tracks.

Those sparks may have started the fire, keeping the woman from escaping.

Skeletal remains were found inside the car.

Investigators do not believe there was anyone else in the vehicle.

The victim's name is not expected to be released until the identity can be confirmed, which could take several weeks.
