GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Green Bay Democratic Senator Dave Hansen along with two other senators are asking the Dane County District Attorney to open a criminal investigation into the state’s troubled job creation agency.

The Wisconsin Economic DevelopmentCorporation was the focus of a highly critical audit into its operations.  The audit found the agency failed to follow state laws in issuing awards, incentives, and tax credits, and failed to track tens of millions dollars in loans.

“We received the letter, we’ll take a look at it,” Dane County DA Ismael Ozanne said “we look at everything we receive and go from there.”

Sen. Hansen says there needs to be an independent investigation and this seems to be the only way to compel their cooperation with state statutes.

“We don’t know if it rises to the level of criminal behavior, and you don’t want to place blame,” Hansen said. “But what we want to see is WEDC comply with the law.”

The letter was sent by Hansen along with Democrats Bob Wirch and Jon Erpenbach.

St. Vincent Hospital celebrates 125th anniversary

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The 125th anniversary of St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay is being honored this week.

"We've had activities all week," says Chief Nurse Executive Paula Hafeman. "Every colleague is part of our mission, and they are carrying on the Sisters mission, so they're celebrating with our Sisters and our leadership."

The St. Vincent Hospital story began with a letter written in 1888. At the urging of community leaders, Bishop Frederick Katzer wrote to the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis in Springfield, Illinois, asking for help.

At the time, Green Bay had no hospital.

Five sisters made the trip from Springfield to Green Bay, and on December 12, 1888, they opened a hospital in a 23-room house on Quincy Street with just one chair, four beds, and an old cook stove.

"They would trade $25 of goods so they could survive and eat, for a certificate good for health care for a year," said Hafeman.

Since then, Hafeman points out that the biggest changes in health care are technology and specialty care.

"Our mission is to love to heal, that's what the Sisters did, they loved people to wellness," says Hafeman. "That's what we are here to do; we just have more tools to do it with."

Renovations to the medical facility since the 437-bed hospital was completed in 1957, has brought about the region's first Newborn Intensive Care Unit, the Heart Center, the Regional Emergency Center and St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center.

Hafeman says they continue to serve as many people as they can and will strive to be a part of the fabric of Green Bay.

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - The Experimental Aircraft Association says it has grudgingly agreed to pay almost a half-million dollars to have air traffic controllers at the EAA AirVenture show in Oshkosh.

It used to be that the group never had to pay anything extra for federal controllers – but that was before the federal budget sequester took effect in March.

The Federal Aviation Administration says it must cut $384 million from its budget for the current fiscal year – and charging for controllers is one way to do that.

EAA chairman Jack Pelton said the FAA is holding events like his hostage – and they agreed to pay $447,000 for the controllers because there was no other realistic option to, “preserve aviation’s largest annual gathering.”

10,000 planes and hundreds of thousands of spectators attend the EAA show.

The group will pay part of its bill now, and the rest after the event, which is set for July 29th through August 4th at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.

Pelton said the issue is not over. He said he hopes the FAA’s leadership will attend the event to, “personally explain their policy to the nation’s aviators.”
