ST. LOUIS, MO (WTAQ) - While they didn't make the postseason, the Milwaukee Brewers were able to wrap up 2017 with a 6-1 win and a series win on the road over their division rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals.

Brett Phillips popped a three-run homer in the first inning to put the Crew ahead early. Jesus Aguilar added a two-run homer and drove in three RBI.

The usual triple-threat of Ryan Braun, Travis Shaw, and Domingo Santana did not appear in the game.

Milwaukee starter Aaron Wilkerson tossed seven innings of one-run ball for his first career win.

The Brewers end their year with a 86-76 record, their best record since 2011, when the club appeared in the National League Championship Series.

Despite that, they had a worse head-to-head record than last season with the division winners, the Chicago Cubs, winning only one series out of a possible six.

The Cubs will attempt to defend their World Series championship from 2016 by facing the Washington Nationals in the Divisional round, beginning this Friday.

The second-place Brewers will reload and prepare for the 2018 season opener against the San Diego Padres on March 29th.

MADISON, WI (WRN) - A reminder to practice good cyber hygiene, as the state begins Cyber Security Awareness month.

The recent data breach at Equifax has many people rethinking the best ways to keep their personal information safe in a world that's constantly more connected to the internet.

Tod Pritchard with Wisconsin Emergency Management says it's important for people to keep tabs on what threats are out there.

"So many of the people who become victims were just not aware of the potential problems coming their way. The just didn't see the scam coming."

Pritchard says simple steps, like keeping your systems up to date and changing passwords often, can go a long way towards protecting yourself.

While remembering passwords to multiple accounts can be difficult, it really is best not to use the same one in several places.

Also, be aware of what's connected to your home network and change the default passwords on those devices.

The free event was hosted by "City Peeps." The group was founded in 2011 and believes backyard chickens made wonderful pets.

Shannon Kenevan is City Peeps co-founder....and spoke to FOX 11...

"They're just fun to watch. They're entertaining. They're fairly easy to care for and then to get eggs on top of it, which you just don't get anything like that from any other pet. It's just a wonderful benefit."

In April, the city's common council voted to allow chickens in Appleton.

Residents are allowed to own up to four hens and no roosters.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Local law enforcement reacts to Sunday night's mass shooting in Las Vegas.

Green Bay Police Captain Kevin Warych notes the tragedy hits home with officers roughly 2-thousand miles away.

"It's a constant reminder why we train, why we prepare, why we have the equipment that we have, and why we connect with the community so that when tragedy does strike, the community can come together."

Warych notes his department always has crisis plans in place.

"Tabletop scenarios will be developed to make sure that we can constantly respond to any type of situation for any type of event here in the Green Bay community.  Nothing is off the table when it comes to planning for an event and protecting the safety of all of the people that come into the City of Green Bay."

Warych says it takes a communal effort to try and prevent a tragedy like this from happening.

"If it's suspicious to you, odds are it's suspicious to law enforcement.  The common phrase in law enforcement is 'if you see something, say something.'"

Authorities say 64-year-old Stephen Paddock opened fire during a country concert at Mandalay Bay and Casino, taking his own life after killing at least 58 people and injuring at least 500 others.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A local hotel official discusses Sunday night's mass shooting near Mandalay Bay and Casino in Las Vegas.

Ron Zellars manages the Hampton Inn Green Bay.  He stresses the importance of hiring vigilant employees and providing them with proper training on signs of suspicious behavior.

"We do our best to make sure that we're looking for things that are out of the normal, things that don't look right, but it's very chilling when you see something like that happen."

Zellars stresses the importance of workers knowing how a typical person or group would act.

"If something seems out of the norm, you'd certainly bring it up, but it can be difficult to determine exactly what's coming or going."

Zellars notes that even having a good staff can't fully prevent against everything since hotels attract a wide-range of guests.

"They don't have different clothing choices, luggage choices, interests.  You're basically at the mercy of someone showing something that they have the intent to do something horrible."

According to Zellars, guarding against a tragedy takes a team effort.

"Whether it be a front desk person that sees something suspicious, a housekeeper that's cleaning their room that something doesn't seem right, or somebody's trying to sneak something inside."

Authorities say 64-year-old Stephen Paddock opened fire at fans at an outdoor country concert, taking his own life after killing at least 58 people and injuring at least 500 others.

Spotting Potentially Deadly Domestic Violence Sooner

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - The Green Bay Police Department says it is taking a new approach, to hopefully prevent domestic violence related deaths, or abuse.

Green Bay Police Commander Jim Runge tells FOX 11 there's point to this.

"Identifying those victims, who are potentially in danger, and going down the road of becoming a victim of homicide."

Runge says all officers in Brown County will undergo the training, "Implementing what is called the Maryland Model of Lethality."

He continued to explain, that officers will be taught to ask certain questions.

"It's a short questionnaire that is scored, it's about 11 questions, an officer will ask a victim of domestic violence."

Officers will be asking questions like is the suspected abuser employed? Do they have children with the person? or has the person ever try to kill them self?

"The questions that are asked right away to victims, on the scene, helps them understand how dangerous this can be," said Karen Michaels, Golden House Executive Director.

The training is in partnership with agency, a domestic violence program and shelter.

Michaels says if someone answers, "yes" to enough questions, someone from the agency will respond.

"For these victims it will be an immediate connection, between the officer, and the advocate agency, which will be us."

In what Runge says is effort to end domestic abuse in our area.

"That's really what this is all about, having more positive outcomes."

Officers will begin training at the end of the month.

Organizers tell FOX 11 one in four women will be affected by domestic violence and that men will play a critical role in ending this epidemic.

"It's a pretty big issue," said Harbor House Calumet Co. outreach coordinator, Melissa Giebel.

"A lot of times it goes unreported, but we prosecute about 125 cases per year but we know that there's more than that in the community."

"We know men are the vast majority of the perpetrators and because of that, we need men also stepping up and speaking up and helping in these epidemics, " said Shannon Kenevan of Voices of Men.

Harbor House says it serves more than 1,600 children and adults each year.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - More than 500 people were injured after the deadly shooting in Las Vegas and local hospitals have been taking a proactive approach in case a tragic event happens here.

Once a year hospitals in Green Bay work to exercise a massive casualty drill. As part of the drill college students play a role of someone who is injured.

HSHS St. Vincent chief nursing executive for the eastern Wisconsin division, Paula Hafeman tells FOX 11 there's also plans in case the hospitals become full.

"We utilize our census management plan, which quite frequently since it gets high we have a plan on how we discharge patients and we have a room of where they set up for them to be in temporarily if they they transportation."

The last mass causality drill was in August.

Bellin Celebrates Surgical Milestone

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A local healthcare provider is celebrating a milestone.

Bellin Health officials say they recently completed their 5-thousandth robotic-assisted surgery, which they first implemented in 2005.

The procedure involves making small incisions to allow for the insertion of viewing scopes and thin arms with tiny surgical instruments.

A surgeon sits at a separate console to control instruments by hand and foot controls, while looking through a magnified 3D high-definition vision system.

Health officials say the tools bend and rotate much better than the human hand, allowing for greater control and precision.

Vice-President of Anesthesia and Surgery Lori Rexses says that all leads to multiple benefits for patients.

"It results in a reduced amount of pain, blood loss, and early return to normal activity."

Rexses notes robotic surgery allows Bellin to reduce costs for clients.

"Patients don't need to stay as long in the hospital.  We see a reduction in complications and also a reduction in emergency room visits."

Rexses says the typical outcomes of a robotic surgery separate it from even those procedures that are the most similar.

"Between a laparoscopic procedure and a case that is done with the robot, the length of stay is even shorter (when the robot is used)."

Rexses notes it also normally results in less pain for patients and allows Bellin to take on more complex cases than they could if only offering the laparoscopic route.

Robotic Coordinator Alecia Van Lanen notes one of Bellin's greatest robotics success stories.

"One of surgeons did a hysterectomy case on a patient.  That very night, she was able to go to her child's football game."

Bellin now has three robotics units: two at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay and one at Bellin Health Oconto Hospital.

Nearly two dozen surgeons perform robotic surgeries at Bellin facilities.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - It may still be nearly three months away, but one local organization is already looking ahead to the holidays.

The Salvation Army of Greater Green Bay held the first of five Christmas assistance interviews Tuesday.

Social Services Director Nan Pahl explains the requirements for Brown County residents.

"(They must present) photo IDs of the adults in the household and something that has the dates of birth of the children.  We also ask the family to talk to us about their income situation."

The assistance interviews cover the Coats for Kids, Toys for Tots, and holiday food basket programs.

"We provide family games, and we want to do things that bring the family together to create Christmas memories."

Pahl says they do not have a limit on the number of recipient families since most items are donated.

"The coats are donated.  We end up purchasing just a few of our new coats.  For our toys, we partner with the U.S. Marines, or they're donated by either individuals, businesses, or churches who do specific toy collections."

Pahl says they'll likely be doing quite a bit of work this winter.

"We expect to have signed up about 2-thousand families.  If numbers hold as they were last year, that would be about 5-thousand children."

Pahl notes there are four more Christmas assistance interview dates scheduled.  You can find out more about those and other ways to apply by clicking here or calling 920-497-7053, Extension 2626.
