KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ) - Investigators say a Thursday afternoon garage fire in Kaukauna caused an estimated $95,000 in damage.

Crews note the garage was engulfed in flames and note the fire had spread to the 546 Roger Court house by the time they arrived.

It had also melted siding on multiple adjoining properties and a fence.

The blaze is believed to have been electrical in nature.

Big Brother Crossing Guards

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - Trying to expand the supervision of two of Appleton's busiest crosswalks. High definition cameras will soon record every crossing.

The crosswalks are located on College Avenue, connecting sides of the Lawrence University Campus.

Lawrence University Junior Callie Ochs uses these crosswalks at least three times a day.

She tells WLUK most cars stop when they see the lights flashing, but she's still cautious.

"I always make sure to see if the cars are slowing down and you start to get a sense for that after you've crossed the crosswalk long enough."

Jake Woodford is the assistant to the university president. He told us it's not uncommon for vehicles to keep driving as students enter the crosswalks.

"Usually reported issues are often about violations in the crosswalks."

In one specific incident a student was badly hurt when she was hit by a car there in October 2013. That hit and run case is still unsolved and it haunts both the school and the city.

"So it's incidents like that that certainly play a role as we look for ways to improve safety in the crosswalks," explained Woodford.

School and city leaders have decided to install high definition cameras in the median.

Woodford says there's already one in place.

"The cameras are intended to be an additional tool for law enforcement to follow up on issues that happen in the crosswalks."

Eventually another camera will be placed in the median as well so that east and west traffic can be covered.

And while cars not stopping is a big concern at the crosswalks, there are others.

"Issues like street harassment," said Woodford.

According to Woodford students have reported drivers yelling out racial slurs and sexual harassment.

"I've had lots of friends who've gotten cat-called and stuff," said Ochs.

Ochs says having the cameras provides a sense of comfort.

"It's nice to know that there's a camera in case something goes wrong."

The university is paying for the cameras. The city will install and maintain them.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - Thousands from across the state gathered at Lambeau Field today for the 5th annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.

Over 2,100 people climbed the equivalent of 110 stories which represents the height of the fallen World Trade Center towers.

Each climber was given a badge with the name and photograph of one of the fallen officers from that day.

Organizers, like Green Bay Metro Assistant Fire Chief Rob Goplin, tell WLUK it's the largest stair climb in the country and it's amazing to see how many people attend.

"For all those people to come out and remember something that was a huge impact on our country, occurred 16 years ago, still remembering it, it's just amazing to see."

Saturday's event raised $110,000 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

It support the families of fallen firefighters and provides training programs to reduce the number of firefighter deaths.

Appleton Conducting Social Media Survey

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - The City of Appleton is looking to do a better job of reaching people through social media.

Communications Coordinator Chad Doran explains the point of the 20-question survey.

"(The goal is) figuring out what platforms people are using from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube.  We really want to hone in on what platforms our residents are using and really try to look at what they are using them for."

While most questions are multiple choice, Doran notes one is open ended.

"What do they want to see from us on those platforms?  What kind of information do they want us to provide them?"

Doran says they've already received multiple suggestions.

"We know residents want to hear more about traffic and construction projects that we have going on. They want to hear about people that work here for the city, sort of behind the scenes, what sort of jobs we actually have and what people are doing with tax money."

Doran says the annual survey was conducted for the first time in 2016, noting some of the feedback has been implemented.

"One of the biggest ones was just how many people here in Appleton are using Facebook.  We sort of put a premium with our departments to focus our efforts on Facebook."

You can access the survey until September 22 by clicking here or visiting the city's social media sites.

Packers Slapped In Rematch

ATLANTA, GA (WTAQ) - The depth of the Green Bay Packers roster was put to the test in Week 2, and it wasn’t enough to stand up to the defending NFC Champions, the Atlanta Falcons, in a 34-23 loss.

OTs Bryan Bulaga, David Bakhtiari, and Jason Spriggs were all ruled out coming into the game.

DT Mike Daniels left the game early on with a hamstring injury, and the Packers proceeded to allow more than 100 yards rushing between Falcons RBs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. WR Jordy Nelson (quad), WR Randall Cobb (shoulder), and S Kentrell Brice (groin) also went down with injuries.

The Packers offense was controlled by the Falcons during the first half, held to only 103 yards of total offense and one rushing TD from RB Ty Montgomery.

QB Aaron Rodgers was intercepted by CB Desmond Trufant near the end of the half, setting up another quick Falcons TD drive and putting the Packers down 24-7.

Trufant would be the beneficiary of another Packers miscue to begin the second half. A pressured Aaron Rodgers attempted to throw the ball away, but instead threw a lateral pass to nobody, which was considered a fumble. Trufant returned it for a TD to put the Packers in a deep hole they would make an effort to dig out of with two fourth quarter TDs, but ultimately would drown in.

Injuries to the Packers’ No.1 and 2 receivers could be devastating for the rest of the 2017 campaign.

For now, the Pack will lick their wounds and prepare for a home game next Sunday against the struggling Cincinnati Bengals.

MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) - The Milwaukee Brewers belt out 16 hits against the Miami Marlins in their series finale on the way to a 10-3 win Sunday.

Domingo Santana and Travis Shaw were the biggest contributors for the Brewers with 3 RBI each, all the hard way with no home runs from the Crew.

Jesus Aguilar was also active at the plate, going 3 for 5.

Starting Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff put in quality time over seven innings. He was responsible for all three Marilns runs, but struck out five on the way to his second win of the year.

This series was originally set to be played in Florida, but damage from Hurricane Irma moved it to Milwaukee.

Every game is a must-win from this point on if the Brewers want to see post-season play, and it starts tonight with a road series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) - The Packers officially opened the Titletown District park on Friday.

The unique playground, football field and activities at Titletown Park aren't the only touches that are impressing families.

"They did tell me there were some cameras running around to keep an eye on everybody and make sure nothing goes sour."

Jay Delgado tells WLUK that not only are his kids having fun, but now they're safe.

Packers Director of Public Affairs, Aaron Popkey said the team expanded security to patrol the Titletown development.

"We do have an active safety and security presence as well as personnel and security cameras."

Security will be on scene or nearby 24 hours every day. Popkey said there won't be any gates, but the area is well defined.

"With respect to the environment, we got the parameters, which is mainly just the buildings that are on the outside and then we got the security bollards"Popkey said bollards act as a barrier to keep unwanted vehicles and large objects out of the park.

Park-goers can also expect to see at least one park attendant everyday during park hours between 7 in the morning and 10 at night.

Although the area is in Ashwaubenon, the Brown County Sheriff's department will monitor the zone during game days.

One parent said he's not worried about game day affecting the area.

"I would imagine there's going to be a police presence but I don't know why anybody would come bother anyone here and bother the Packers kids," said Jason Coniff.

Parents also say it's important for the community to respect the new attraction.

"I think we keep everything intact, we keep everything clean, we keep everything safe, so these kids can keep enjoying the park," Dalgado said.

The Packers are still working to complete a tubing hill and skating pond for winter use. A bistro and event space are also set to open by November.

While officers headed that way, they were told the truck went off the road and into the river near Catherine Street and east Wisconsin Avenue.

The man managed to get out of his truck and police say they found him hiding under a trailer but he tried to get away.

In a Facebook Post Kaukauna Police explain how the man was taken into custody.

"He was subdued by use of a Taser and taken into custody. Kaukauna Fire Department Paramedics transported him to the hospital for medical evaluation of minor injuries sustained in the crash. Following medical clearance, he was transported to the Outagamie County Jail on charges of disorderly conduct, resisting and obstructing."

A tow truck pulled the man's vehicle out of the water and officials estimate the damage to be about $8,000.

WPS Helping Put Florida Back Together

Pomona Park, FLA, (WTAQ) - Progress is being made, but it's still a slow go for 2 dozen WPS linemen and technicians helping to restore power to millions of Floridians who've been in the dark since Hurricane Irma roared through more than a week ago.

Crews were initially assigned to help out in Georgia, but a couple of days later were sent to Florida.

What they've encountered is one big job.

"Like a storm in the Green Bay area, this is probably like a hundred times worse."

Steven Van Campenhout says there's a lot of places that haven't even been able to get into because the water is still too high.

Crews get their assignment every morning, go out and pull a 16 hour shift.

They're warned before going out each day to watch for snakes, red ants....and gators.

"Well, we understand they can go o-to-40 pretty quick. So you don't want to taunt them."

One thing that makes the sometimes dangerous work, and long hours, worth it....is how grateful everyone is to see them

Darla Turner was thrilled to see the WPS truck pull up to her Pomona Park home.

"It's been kind of a challenge, but we're very, very thankful. It would'nt be appropriate for me to hug them...but I'd hug them all."

Van Campenhout says the assignment was for 3 weeks, but if they're needed to stay longer they will.

Brown County Murder Trial Postponed

BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - The trial for the 39-year-old Green Bay man charged in a May 2016 Bellevue murder has been postponed.

Multiple unresolved pre-trial motions have pushed the start of George Burch's trial back from October 2 to February 16.

Prosecutors believe Burch killed Nicole VanderHeyden and dumped her body in a field.

Burch plans to argue that VanderHeyden's ex-boyfriend Douglass Detrie is the real killer.

The state will allow his defense team to make that case, but only after Burch takes the stand.

Hurricane Affected Dogs Arrive in Appleton

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - A group of dogs whose owners had to give them up after being affected by Hurricane Harvey have arrived in Northeast Wisconsin.

A total of 56 canines made the flight from Houston to Appleton Monday.

While the majority of the dogs will stay at the Fox Valley Humane Society's Appleton location, six are headed to their Oshkosh facility.

The Humane Society's Deb Lewis hopes the dogs will be ready for adoption next week.

"If you stop and think about that pet that's sitting on your Davenport next to you, can you imagine if you had to sign it over because you couldn't take it with you?  It just breaks my heart to think what those people are going through."

Change Of Heart For 9-11 Memorial ?

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - Two Green Bay aldermen say the decision to take down the city's deteriorating September 11th memorial was made too quickly.

Aldermen Guy Zima and Andy Nicholson are asking for a re-vote, even though a deaccession ceremony was held last Monday, on the 16th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

As part of the ceremony, a steel beam from the World Trade Center was transported from the memorial to the city’s police station.

The beam was considered by many as the most important part of the memorial.

“It went before the park committee five days before our last council meeting, which went on until 3 o'clock in the morning,” Zima tells WLUK.

“This was completely overlooked.”

The council unanimously agreed to remove the steel beam and have it rotate being displayed at the police and fire stations until it can be permanently placed at a future police and fire headquarters.

Green Bay alderman Randy Scannell is a little mystified.

“They get an agenda packet over the weekend. They know what's in their packets. They know it's coming up. Whatever time it is we discuss it is immaterial.”

Scannell was part of a subcommittee that evaluated options for the memorial, which is not only falling apart, but includes factual errors.

“The girder, which is the most important part of the monument was also never meant to be exposed to the elements, so we really should do something with that to protect it.”

“There is ways to protect everything,” said Zima.

“It's in a place of prominence right now. Tens of thousands of people drive by it every day.”

The city's public works department is waiting for a possible reconsideration vote before taking down the rest of the memorial.

If the council maintains last month's vote, everything will be coming down in the next few weeks.

Scannell and Public Works Director Steve Grenier say they are unaware of anyone that looked into the cost for fixing the current memorial.

It was built in 2005 with $250,000 of donations.
