Vandals Move On From Mailboxes

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - Another round of vandalism in the area.  This time, several cars were damaged using spray paint in Green Bay.

It follows other incidents, including stolen lawn ornaments and damage to mailboxes.

Joe Walton tells WLUK he woke up Monday morning when he heard his girlfriend crying about the obscene words spray painted on her car.

"Nothing ever happens around here and then all of the sudden, they start on this rampage." Shortly after seeing that damage, Walton's girlfriend noticed their neighbor's car was also damaged. Walton said the police came to talk to neighbors.

Captain Kevin Warych with the Green Bay Police Department said eight of the incidents were reported in the 1400 block of Wiesner Street.

"They are targeting higher-end vehicles. They would spray paint those vehicles and leave the lesser value alone."

J.J. Schultz also woke up seeing his car sprayed with vulgar language.

Schultz said he works at a school and had to back his car up to the building so kids wouldn't see the paint.

"You get a lot of looks, even though I didn't do anything to deserve this."

But that's not the only vandalism that took place overnight in Brown County. Some homeowners in De Pere found their mailboxes smashed.

De Pere Community Resource Officer, Jedd Bradley, said incidents of vandalism are being reported county-wide, that includes more than 80 mailboxes smashed over the weekend in Suamico.

"It takes up a lot of officer time and resources and it's expensive. Not only using police officers to find out who did this but also the victims have to replace their mailboxes."

As for Walton, he said he'll be on the lookout, "So, God bless them because you're going to jail if I find out who you are."

Anyone with information is asked to call the De Pere or Green Bay Police departments, or Crime Stoppers.

FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) - A Fond du Lac convenience store known for selling plenty of big winners over the years is seeing a huge spike in business as the Powerball jackpot continues to grow.

Ma and Pa's Grocery Express, which has sold multiple nine-figure Powerball tickets, is part of the 'Miracle Mile.'

"We sold just shy of $17,000 in tickets on Saturday.  We estimate it to be at least that for Wednesday. On an average day, we can do anywhere between $3,000-$5,000 worth of tickets."

Manager Amy Karow says they have more than twice their normal staff scheduled to work Tuesday and Wednesday, with roughly 2,000 lottery players expected to come through the doors.

The Powerball jackpot is the second largest in the game's history and third largest in the state lottery's history at $700,000,000, with a cash payout option of $443,300,000.

Karow says the potential big payday has drawn people from near and far.

"We actually had a couple come from Canada last Wednesday, took a little ride on their motorcycle.  All around the state, outside of the state, Illinois, Iowa, just to come get tickets and then turn around and go home."

Karow notes those people have turned to a variety of strategies.

"We have a lot of people bring in their own slips.  Some people that bring in a couple hundred dollars just for tickets don't care.  They just take the quick picks.  There's people that come in looking for mistake tickets that were accidentally printed."

Karow has also seen some players turn to superstitions.

"Say the Powerball number was 13 on Wednesday, they'd like the Powerball 13 for today.  Some people, if they get the same numbers on two different lines, they want a different set of numbers."

Ma and Pa's sales have included $208,000,000 and $111,000,000 winners.

Tickets cost $2 each and must be purchased by 9 pm Wednesday.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Two Green Bay Police Department employees are back at work Tuesday, one day after becoming sick after opening an envelope that came in the mail.

The incident happened Monday which caused a Hazmat team and the FBI to evacuate the building. It was reopened just a few hours later.

Chief Andrew Smith says they still don't know who sent the letter or what the possible substance was that caused the captain and secretary to become ill.

"The postal inspectors has been very helpful. We believe there may be some false information on the front of the envelope so we are going to continue to analyze that and see if we can get to the bottom of that," Smith said.

Smith says the envelope was addressed to the police department but not a specific person.

And although the two employees are back at work, Smith says they are keeping a close eye on them.

"The big concern is if they start to experience flu-like symptoms, then that might be indicative that they've gotten something whatever was in that envelope."

When the incident happened, the employees were given Narcan as a precaution and were taken to the local hospital.

The FBI has taken over the investigation and is analyzing the envelope.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Restoration work will temporarily close the cathedral for Green Bay’s Catholic Diocese.

St. Francis Xavier’s pews will be refurbished and re-stained, and new floors will be installed.

In addition, Worship Director Michael Poradek says significant restoration work will be done to the cathedral’s murals.

“So we haven’t had a cleaning of the murals in quite a long time and after many years of incense and just wear-and-tear, they’re in need of a cleaning.  So we’ll be able to see some beautiful new colors and be able to see that art in a whole new way.”

Poradek says the work is being done ahead of next year’s diocese 150th year celebration.

The last mass at the downtown cathedral is scheduled with September 3, with the first mass at the renovated facility scheduled for December 3.

Church officials encourage people to attend mass at the nearby St. John the Evangelist while the church is closed.

Paper Company Files for Receivership

COMBINED LOCKS, WI (WTAQ) - A Fox Valley paper company is looking for a buyer after recently filing for receivership.

That's an alternative to bankruptcy that will allow Appleton Coated to stay open during the selling process.

Senior Vice President Ann Whalen notes this effects more than just their 620 workers.

"It not only affects the employees directly but lots of suppliers of raw materials and services to the mill as well, so it has a big impact to the community."

The Combined Locks facility makes high-end paper for printing and textbook publishing.

Whalen says digital alternatives have proven to be their biggest challenge.

"This overcapacity is resulting in falling prices and operating losses for our company, as well as many companies in the paper industry."

Whalen remains optimistic that Appleton Coated will find a buyer.

"There has been a lot of interest and we're just getting into heavy meetings with interested parties."

Appleton Coated was last sold three years ago.

DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - Tuesday was the first ever Main Street Day in Wisconsin.

To celebrate, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation highlighted 12 downtowns across the state, including De Pere's.

For the first time in almost 25 years, downtown De Pere is opening the doors to a new major residential development.

Jason Tadych, the primary developer for The 102 on Broadway apartments, spoke to WLUK.

“We felt there was a niche in De Pere for some luxury residences.”

With five stories, The 102 on Broadway already has 20 of its 29 apartment units filled.

Rent ranges from $1,100 for a one-bedroom unit to $2,900 for three bedrooms with a terrace overlooking the river and downtown.

“We've had a lot of people come to us and say we'd really like to be downtown,” said Michael Walsh, De Pere’s mayor. “Not only older people, but millennials too.”

While The 102 on Broadway fills the desire for luxury living, down the street, New Leaf Market Cooperative is hoping to satisfy the appetite for an east De Pere grocery store.

Tracy Flucke is a New Leaf Market board member.

“We have about two thirds of our members right now that live probably within a two-mile radius of this site.”

New Leaf's efforts to open a community-owned grocery store in the Green Bay area started in 2008.

Now nearing 1,000 members and 94 percent of its financing in place, New Leaf hopes to break ground this fall on an expansion and renovation at 320 N Wisconsin Street.

“We've really been pushing membership again recently because that’s our next big thing is to really get membership up,” said Flucke. “All of our other financing is pretty well set.”

“The more day-to-day amenities that we can bring to the downtown area, I think the more people are going to want to live in the downtown area,” said Tadych.

Board members estimate the amount of retail space for the grocery store will be similar to Austin's Grocery Store in Allouez.
