GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - An annual event helps roughly 3,000 Brown County elementary and middle school students stock up for the coming school year.

The Service League of Green Bay held its annual 'back to school store' at East High School on Wednesday.

Marketing Director Nicole Baumann says students who qualify for free and reduced lunches are able to get school supplies, dental and vision screenings, and clothing.

"They get to pick out whatever clothes they want.  For a lot of the kids, this is the only time of year they get brand new clothes or brand new shoes."

Maria Garcia is grateful her son Jonn was able to take part.

"Sometimes you just can't get enough for them, or you don't have the funds to get it."

This was the event's 25th year.

Students are able to sign up for the application-based program as early as April.

Archery Season Excites Local Hunters

MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - The archery season for Deer Hunt 2017 is about five weeks away, and some hunters in Manitowoc are signing up for another special hunt within city limits.

A cautious young doe feeds in a park on Manitowoc's north side. Hunters say plenty of deer live in the city.

"Well, there are a lot of deer hiding in those areas, and it might be a little easier," said Chuck Remiker, Manitowoc.

Remiker is one of about a dozen archers interested in bow hunting on city property.

Manitowoc Police Lieutenant Mark Schroeder says the hunt goes back 11 years.

The intent was to thin-out the city's deer population and reduce the number of car-deer crashes in town.

Three public plots have been identified.

Hunters need to shoot from above.

"It's a huge safety thing. When you're hunting out of a tree stand with a bow, your average shot is 15-20 yards. And if it's on a downward angle, it's much safer for everybody in the area," said Lieutenant Mark Schroeder, Manitowoc Police Department.

Hunters may apply online or at the police department.

And new this year, there are some fresh guidelines.

Archers are being asked to turn in their applications by September 7.

That way, police can process the paperwork, before the season begins on September 16.

Last year about 80 hunters participated in the program.

Some hunters are just getting information.

"Just somewhere different to hunt. Seeing what's going on. I'm not going to get involved if there's too many people. I don't like fighting over spots, which is what's going on in the country," said Shane Kochorosky, Shoto.

But Remiker says he is ready for this season to start.

"Last year, I saw at least a 10-pointer. A couple of does. Just couldn't get them to come in by us. We'll have to try something new this year," he said.

Manitowoc Police says deer cause problems for motorists.

According to Wisconsin Department of Transportation, each year there are dozens of crashes within the city, involving deer.

Looking at the past five years, the trend is increasing, from 45 reported crashes in 2012, to 53 in 2013, and 59 in 2014.

Then there was a drop to 50 in 2015.

But then in 2016, the number went up again, with 58 crashes.

And that's just in the city.

Countywide last year saw 704 car-deer crashes.

The archery season begins in Manitowoc and statewide September 16 and runs through January 7.

Green Bay's 9-11 Memorial to be Removed

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - Green Bay’s parks committee voted Wednesday night to have the deteriorating September 11th memorial on the edge of the Fox River taken down.

“It seems like every time I go and look at it, it's in worse shape,” said Randy Scannell, a Green Bay alderman who was on a subcommittee dedicated to figuring out what to do with the memorial. “Over the years there was constant complaints about the condition of it and rightfully so.”

Cracks and factual errors litter the memorial, which was donated and dedicated 12 years ago.

The city's parks committee agreed with the subcommittee that it should be taken down, with the steel beam being saved for a future memorial.

“We're looking at setting up an interactive display, so it would have a touch screen,” said Steve Grenier, the city’s public works director. “You can get a lot more information than just the monument.”

The plan is to remove the steel beam from the memorial this September 11th.

A police and fire honor guard procession would then bring the beam to the city's police department to be displayed for six months.

It would then rotate between the police and fire departments until a joint headquarters is built where the beam would permanently be on display.

“It's interesting to note and very important to remember that the only part of the monument that has any kind of tie directly back to the World Trade Center is the steel beam,” said Grenier.

The city council will vote on the memorial plan next week.

BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - Brown County Sheriff's officials say 35 men have been arrested within county lines as part of a nationwide effort to crack down on human trafficking.

The National Johns Suppression Initiative involved 37 law enforcement agencies across 17 states.

It led to 1,020 arrests of sex buyers and the recovery of 81 victims, including six minors.

"Human traffickers prey on young females, 12-14 years of age, that have problems at home, that don't have any parental guidance or anything like that."

Sergeant Matt Wilson notes how victims get caught up in sex trafficking.

"Some sort of either force, fraud, or coersion, so either they're drug dependent or they're dependent on their "boyfriend" that they're relying to give them either clothes, food, housing, something like that."

Brown County's arrests took place between July 17-20 in municipalities including Green Bay, Ashwaubenon, and De Pere, and included a wide range of people.

"We saw a 20-year-old that was about to get married, and then we saw up to a 64-year-old that was a single male, never been married.

Wilson notes one case that stood out.

"One of our detectives was in contact with a registered sex offender who was 49 years of age in Ashwaubenon.  That individual agreed to have sex with a 15-year-old boy."

The sheriff's office says it is not releasing the names of those arrested at this time.

The National Johns Suppression Initiative started in Cook County, Illinois in 2011.  This was Brown County's first year of participating.
