NORTHEAST WISCONSIN, WI (WTAQ) - The Fox Cities and Green Bay are celebrating one branch of the United States military.

'Navy Week' coincides with EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh.

Navy Public Affairs Specialist Cecilia Sequeira says various events are set up at the festival, with the goal of educating people about the Navy, its people, and its importance to national security.

"We're representing the institutional memory of the Navy so we're bringing a lot of resources to the public. Here there's not a large Navy presence so we're bringing that large presence here."

Petty Officer First Class Ross Brueggeman is a Naval recruiter in Green Bay.

He says just because Wisconsin doesn't have a Naval base, doesn't mean people aren't joining.

"We actually do real well in Green Bay. We average about three to four people a month, and there's a lot of job fields out there."

The latest numbers show more than 41-hundred Wisconsinites are currently serving in the Navy.

MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) - A seven-run eighth inning lifted the Washington Nationals to an 8-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the second-of-three at Nationals Park.

Starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson dominated the Nats for more than seven innings, but the wheels fell off when the bullpen took over. Jacob Barnes was tagged with the loss.

Bright spots came in the first inning with a Domingo Santana home run, and in the ninth with Milwaukee's top prospect Lewis Brinson hitting his first career home run.

The loss dropped the Brewers a half-game behind the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.

Milwaukee can win the three game series with the Nationals when they meet again this afternoon in D. C.

GREENVILLE, WI (WTAQ) - The excitement from EAA reaches across Northeast Wisconsin.

The planes, and for the first time this year, even the campers are at Appleton International Airport.

It's almost 25 miles away from EAA Airventure, but you can still see, and hear, the outer ring of plane activity in Greenville at the Appleton International Airport.

Pat Tracey, Appleton International Airport's marketing manager, tells WLUK hundreds of planes park at Appleton International for the week.

"Everyone here loves aviation, it's a chance to meet people literally from all over the world." New this year, some of the airplane traffic is from people who've come to the Appleton airport to camp for EAA.

There's enough room for 30 airplanes and their passengers.

Tracey said, "It's a lot quieter here as opposed to Oshkosh, it's very peaceful."

Between the campers and the other airplanes parked here, the airport expects to see about 600 airplanes come through by the end of the week.

"Air traffic control tower brings in extra staffing for the week because we're very busy."

Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson says...

"When we think of EAA we think of Oshkosh, but this is a great thing for Appleton, it's a great thing for all of Outagamie County, it's a great thing for most of Northeast Wisconsin."

75 volunteers are also on hand at the airport to deal with that extra traffic.

Tracey says the success of this pilot year for camping, means the airport is already gearing up for next year.

"We are already talking about doubling our camping next year to 60 sites, we have this beautiful field here waiting for us."

The airport charges $20 a day for the camping.

Representative: Foxconn Plant Will Benefit Northeast Wisconsin

LEDGEVIEW, WI (WTAQ) - While Foxconn plans to build its new $10,000,000,000 manufacturing facility at an undisclosed location in Southern Wisconsin, Ledgeview Representative John Macco believes it will also benefit his part of the state.

"They'll have the need for contractors, construction people, sub-contractors of every kind.  It's going to be unprecedented."

Foxconn's Wisconsin location is expected to initially add 3,000 jobs, with the potential of that number growing to 13,000 over time.

UW-Green Bay Director of Engineering and Technology Patricia Terry believes her school can provide some of those workers, saying employer feedback has prompted them to expand manufacturing-related offerings in recent years.

"We have bachelor programs now in electrical, mechanical, and environmental engineering technology."

Terry says students have been able to get real-life experience during their college careers.

"We have an advisory board that's made up of about 50 companies and technical colleges across the region.  They've been providing internships."

She notes the university's focus has been on teaching students more than just engineering skills.

"They want people who have good communication skills, good writing skills, who are good critical and analytical thinkers."

Terry hopes the expansion of the last three years continues going forward, citing talks of building a new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) innovation center on the UWGB campus by 2019.

"The new building will house the new mechanical engineering program, the Einstein Project, other things to start getting kids interested in STEM-type education."

Macco believes the increased opportunities will help many Northeast Wisconsin graduates land family-supporting careers.

"The engineers that will come out of UWGB will probably start at around $60,000 and go up from there."

In addition to the job opportunities for some of its residents, Macco predicts Foxconn's economic impact will lead to plenty of direct and indirect spending in his part of the state, including from employees who vacation at destinations like Door County."

"Just from a purely tax base, that entity will generate $700,000,000 in just wages alone."

Foxconn's proposed 20,000,000 square foot facility joins the Kenosha facility Amazon opened in 2015 and Haribo's planned Pleasant Prairie Factory as those targeting Southern Wisconsin.

To attract those kinds of companies to Northeast Wisconsin, Macco believes it starts with having necessary transportation mechanisms in place.

"Infrastructure.  We have to have amazing beltways like we have on Highway 41.  I'm acutely involved in trying to get a southern bridge between De Pere and Wrightstown."

To secure the deal, Wisconsin lawmakers will have to pass an incentive package that would grant up to $3,000,000,000 in performance-based tax credits to Foxconn over the next 15 years.

Firm: NE Wisconsin Companies can Profit from Foxconn

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - An economic development organization that serves 18 Northeast Wisconsin counties believes it can help ensure local companies benefit from an expected new plant in the southern part of the state.

New North Executive Director Jerry Murphy says "right about the time that Foxconn will be identifying vendors and suppliers for their supply chain needs, we'll basically be able to position this tool for their buyers to use in identifying particularly Northeast Wisconsin based firms."

Murphy describes New North as a supply chain marketplace that connects suppliers and buyers, with 370 users as of April 2017.

He says Foxconn, which plans to build a $10,000,000,000 manufacturing plant in southern Wisconsin within the next few years, will have quite a few needs that the northeast part of the state could provide.

"They'll have a supply chain spend of over $4,000,000,000, and an anticipation of roughly one-third of that most likely from Wisconsin firms."

He says those opportunities for Northeast Wisconsin companies could come in a variety of fields.

"There may be some construction benefits that dribble through, professional services, engineering, financial, legal, packing requirements they will have for their production, the logistics needs they might have for distributing their products."

Murphy says there is no cost for businesses to post their company profile in New North's online directory.

WAUPACA COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - Authorities have identified the 15-year-old Waupaca boy who was accidentally shot and killed by his 17-year-old friend.

Waupaca County Sheriff Brad Hardel says Jacob Peglow was shot in the upper chest, near the shoulder, by a .22 caliber firearm on Wednesday afternoon.

Hardel says dispatch advised those on scene how to attempt life-saving measures.

The sheriff's office is arranging counselors for both the family and the first responders who arrived at the Town of Farmington residence on Rieben Road.

"It's one of those things that you go through that even though it's part of our job, it's not easy.  Our staff needs counseling also."

Hardel says the boys likely did not know the gun was loaded at the time.

"When you're dealing with a firearm, treat it as it's loaded all the time, no matter what."

Hardel says no charges will be filed.

WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - Two people are in critical condition, one suffered minor injuries after a seaplane crashed near EAA AirVenture.

The crash happened Thursday evening near the sea-plane base in Black Wolf. That's just outside Oshkosh.

Emergency vehicles blocked off the road into EAA's seaplane base.

Winnebago County Sheriff's Lieutenant David Roth tells WLUK one of the planes flipped over into Lake Winnebago.

"I do know the plane was attempting to take off. Lake Winnebago is rough at this point in time."

Roth said it's unclear what exactly caused the crash.

"Two of the occupants were trapped in the plane. One of the occupants was able to get out when the door opened when it crashed. The other two had to be taken out of the plane."

Roth says a first responder was also hurt.

"He received a cut on the hand and he was burned by the fuel in the water." According to Roth the people on the plane are all from Minnesota. They were attempting to head back that way when the crash happened.

The FAA and the NTSB are investigating this crash.

Authorities said the plane will likely be removed from the water some time today (Friday) .

Local first responders and the Coast Guard helped with rescue efforts.

Divers did get in the water to make sure no one else was in the plane.

OUTAGAMIE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - Two motorcycles collide in Outagamie County, the drivers are dead and a passenger injured.

The crash happened around 1:30 this morning in the area of County Highway O and Quarry Road, near the Town of Center.

The operator of the first motorcycle, a 27 year old man from Kaukauna, was traveling west on County Highway O and was negotiating a curve on the road where it begins a westbound direction.

While negotiating this curve the motorcycle collided with the second motorcycle.

The second motorcycle was operated by a 29 year old man from Little Chute and had a passenger, a 22 year old woman from Oneida.

The second motorcycle was eastbound on County Highway O approaching the curve to head northbound.

Both the 27 year old man from Kaukauna and the 29 year old man from Little Chute died as a result of their injuries.

The 22 year old woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries. Her condition is not yet known.

Sheriff's Sergeant Nate Borman says "we don't yet have any information regarding alcohol use, although the investigation is ongoing.  It would appear that one of the motorcycles likely crossed the center line, causing the crash.  Also, speed may have been a factor."

All three subjects were wearing helmets.

Borman encourages operates of any vehicle to be careful when on the roads, especially at night.

"This year we've experienced a great increase in fatalities in Outagamie County.  We're trying to figure out why this is happening."

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - A stop in Northeast Wisconsin was included in Governor Scott Walker's Friday schedule as he travels the state to promote the newly-signed Foxconn deal.

Walker's itinerary also included events in Wausau, Eau Claire, and La Crosse.

The governor says the goal is to begin construction on the 20,000,000 square foot facility in 2018, with a completion date in 2020.

Foxconn plans to make the liquid crystal display monitors that are used for computers and televisions at a new $10,000,000,000 manufacturing facility.

While the location has not been finalized, officials are reportedly looking at sites in Racine and Kenosha counties.

Foxconn's new facility is expected to create an initial 3,000 jobs, with a chance of that increasing to 13,000 over time.

If the company makes good on its investment and job creation goals, Walker has proposed providing a $3,000,000,000 tax incentive package over a 15 year period.

Walker plans to call a special session in August, with hopes of getting the necessary legislative approval.

MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) - A Brewers' lefty making just his eighth career start stifled the defending champions' bats Friday night.

Brent Suter scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings as Milwaukee beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1.

Suter, who entered the rotation when Chase Anderson went down with an oblique strain late last month, is 2-0 in five July starts, yielding just five earned runs in 30 innings.

The Brewers' tallies came in the second inning on a Manny Pina groundout that plated Jesus Aguilar and in the fourth on an Orlando Arcia fielder's choice that scored Hernan Perez.

In the eighth inning, the North-siders got one back when Javy Baez hit a solo home run off newly-acquired Milwaukee reliever Anthony Swarzak.

However, Corey Knebel shut the door in the ninth, converting his 18th save in 23 chances.

The Crew, who had lost 9 of 11 entering play Friday, improved to 55-50 with the win and sit just one-half game behind the NL Central leading Cubs (54-48).

Milwaukee and Chicago meet for the second of three from Miller Park tonight, with coverage beginning at 5:35 pm on WTAQ.
