MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - A Marinette pool is set to reopen today after nearly two dozen people were treated for respiratory problems caused by chlorine gas Friday evening.

An expert was brought in to test the chlorine levels and machinery Saturday morning at Marinette Civic Center pool.

Marinette recreation director, Kent Kostelecky tells WLUK it was a one in a million occurrence.

He says a power surge caused the pool to stop circulating water while the chemical feeder continued to add chlorine, resulting in too much of the chemical.

"When the pool was restarted, those chemicals sitting in the empty pipes created a chlorine gas. It was immediately put in the pool and that's what caused the reaction to everybody that was in there."

According to the recreation director, it only took 5 minutes to get everyone out of the pool into the front lawn, where emergency crews were standing by.

Marinette Fire Chief Jay Heckel says the problem was confined to the pool area.

"According to the person from Valley Aquatics, the system is back to functioning normal. It was a mechanical device that failed, but they did the testing on it. Everything seems to be operating normal."

The pool reopened with free admission.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) - Green Bay wide receiver Donald Driver and cornerback Mark Lee became the newest members of the Packers Hall of Fame Saturday.

Fellow Packers and NFL Hall of Fame General Manager Ron Wolf presented Driver, a player he selected in the 7th round of the 1999 NFL Draft.

As for Lee, he selected his Santa Maria (C.A.) high school coach, Bob Jimenez to help add his name to Packers lure.

Two illustrious careers with plenty of accolades, No. 80 goes in as the Packers all-time leading receiver in yards and catches.

He was also a part of Green Bay's 2010 Super Bowl title.

"It's truly an honor to be back where it all started," Driver said. "Right here at Lambeau Field, couldn't imagine this day would ever come. No time soon, I talked with Mark (Lee) about how long he had to wait for this honor and it only took me four years before I got it. The only thing we can say is that we'll be able to share this moment with our families for a very long time."

On the other side of the football, Lee was a star on the up-and-down 1980s Packers teams but still shined hauling in 31 interceptions in 139 starts.

"We all play for the end of the season," Lee said.

"Being that last team standing holding that Vince Lombardi Trophy. Unfortunately that didn't happen for me here but this is just as good, I'll wear this with a badge of honor for the rest of my life."

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Packers training camp starts on Thursday, July 27 and that means more visitors coming to the Green Bay area to see their favorite players hard at work.

Brad Toll, President and CEO of the Greater Green Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau, says this annual event is a way for fans to get up close with personal with the players.

"It's certainly an opportunity for people that don't have season tickets to the games to really come in and get close to Packer players," said Toll.

He says there's an undeniable connection made between the team and fans during this time.

Traditions, like when the players ride kids' bikes to practice and signing autographs help cultivate these bonds.

Toll say his team also takes time to connect with fans by setting up a mobile visitors center outside of Ray Nitschke stadium.

"They're talking about Bay Beach and the zoo and all the other attractions that there are in our community. At the same time we ask visitors to go ahead and put a pin in one of our maps that show where their hometown is," said Toll. "Last year we had people from all 50 states and 39 countries."

Toll says between 90,000 to 100,000 fans travel to Green Bay in the month of August for the event, with an economic impact is around $9,000,000 dollars.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Parents of Washington Middle School students were given a chance to have their voice heard Monday during a series of listening sessions being held by the Green Bay Area School District.

During a June school board meeting, now former sixth grade teacher, Kirsten Westcott, addressed concerns of unsafe conditions for students and staff.

Sara Anderson has a daughter will be entering 8th grade this fall.

She attended the meeting and says she would like the school to do a better job communicating with parents.

"I didn't know a lot of this stuff was happening and then all of a sudden it hits the news and you're concerned. My daughter comes home and she tells us stories but she's 13 you can't always be taking it seriously, but I feel bad now that I didn't take her a little more seriously," Anderson said.

Other parents are pleased with the way the district is handling the alleged abuse.

Steve Engels' daughter is heading into 7th grade this fall and says he's happy with the way the district has responded.

"I do feel like they're (the school district) doing enough. Coming to the meeting I thought it going to be a meeting of them telling us what they're doing, but this was a meeting of them asking us what else could we do," said Engels. "I think that most middle schools in America have middle school events that occur."

Parent Louisa Barman, who's also a teacher in another school district, had this suggestion at the meeting.

"I think as parents and as community members we need to participate and get involved and make sure that we're all keeping this moving forward," said Barman. "The general population in the area doesn't understand that teaching as a whole, you see this in every school. It's a difficult time to teach."

During a June 5, 2017 school board meeting, Westcott alleged disorderly students have taken over the school inflicting 'physical, verbal, emotional, mental, and sexual abuse' on fellow kids and staff members.

The media was not allowed to attend the listening sessions.
