Walker Fighting Fraud in Wisconsin

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Governor Scott Walker making a stop in Green Bay Thursday highlighting efforts to detect and prevent fraud as a part of Fight Fraud Wisconsin Day.

Walker says in 2016, $51 million dollars was saved on the state and local level thanks to the help from the Department of Health Services Office of the Inspector General.

"This is a win, not just for the taxpayers who are certainly very concerned about making sure taxpayers dollars are not wasted, but also for those people who truly need public assistance," said Walker.

The OIG is responsible for detecting fraud, waste and abuse of public assistance programs.

"Anytime there's areas where waste or fraud or overpayments occur, that's money that's taken away from vital services that are needed for our friends and our neighbors," Walker stated.

Last year, over $19 thousand dollars was discovered in FoodShare program overpayments and future savings in the Badger State.

EAA AirVenture Lands in Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - Airplanes of all types will soon be flying high in the sky above Oshkosh getting ready to land at Whitman Regional Airport for the 65th year of EAA AirVenture.

Event spokesman Dick Knapinski says they had arrivals as early as Thursday preparing for the annual air show.

"We had some regular small aircraft come in, 2-4 passenger, a few ultralights come in, and then on the other end of the spectrum the B-52 Bomber landed," said Knapinski.

More than 55 of the nation's finest air traffic controllers will be working the weeklong event.

"For air traffic controllers, it really is a badge of honor to say I got one of the pink polo shirts and I'm one of the Oshkosh controllers," explained Knapiniski.

The FAA receives hundreds of applications with only the best controllers being selected to work the event.

Despite the high velocity of air traffic coming 'in and out' of airport, Knapinski says it's surprising calm inside the control tower.

"Everybody has their job. Everybody knows what's going on and the airplanes are actually sequenced to make a safe landing."

As many as 8 controllers will be in the tower at a time working the event especially during the peak hours.

Some of those peak hours are coming up this weekend when all the aircraft are arriving to Oshkosh.

"During the peak days, we'll have 3,300 aircraft operations taking place and that is in a 14 hour day because the airport is closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.," Knapinski said.

More than a half million people will attend and more than 10 thousand airplanes will be visiting the region.

The EAA AirVenture takes place July 24-30.

BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - A recent meth bust has been deemed the largest in Brown County history.

Sheriff's officials say they seized nearly 10.7 pounds of the drug during a five-month investigation, almost six pounds more than the department recovered in all of 2016.

Street value is reportedly $485,000.

Deputies are still looking for two of the seven men who were federally indicted in connection with the case, Umero Saldana and Joshua Sepulveda.

While sheriff's officials believe the majority of the drugs were delivered in Brown County, other deliveries reportedly happened in Marinette and Oconto counties.

As part of the investigation, authorities also allegedly recovered heroin, LSD, marijuana, and prescription drugs.

KIEL, WI (WTAQ) - Two teenagers are suspected in the June vandalism of Kiel's Kiwanis Park.

Investigators say the 14 and 16-year-olds were identified through a tip to police.

The pair allegedly painted vulgar and racist graffiti in the park's restroom and another building.

City Administrator Dennis Dedering says there are "toilets that need work, one of the urinals, and there's graffiti over all the walls, I guess, so we're going to have somebody going in and doing a massive cleanup."

Police Chief Dave Funkhouser says the teens have been released to their parents but notes charges are likely.

"We're doing more followup on the case.  Once we get our complete investigation done, we'll send those out to the juvenile authorities."

Dedering says "as soon as we get the o.k. from the police department, we'll start repairing the bathroom damage."

That restroom remains closed.

Damage is estimated around $1,500.

Since the suspects are minors, the city will likely have to flip the bill.

MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) - An exciting day for several tenants of one Manitowoc apartment complex.

Parkview Haven Property Manager Laurie Nordin notes "we do have the first and second floor tenants moving back in today (Wednesday)."

Those residents were among the 88 displaced by a May fire that claimed one life.

Nordin says those moving back in Wednesday received assistance from "people we put on site here ourselves.  It's just the contractors that we have here that are helping when we ask."

Tenants of the complex's west wing were able to return home within the past month.

Nordin notes there is still no timetable for when residents of the third floor, where the fire originated, can move back in, as construction on that part of the building continues.

However, Nordin says Wednesday is an exciting day.

"We're just happy to have them back."

The cause of the fire has not been released.

Green Bay Police Officer Files Discrimination Complaint

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A Green Bay Police Officer has filed a discrimination complaint against the city.

Officer Stephanie Dantoin, 28, alleges she was the subject of "severe or pervasive harassment" for more than a year.

In a complaint filed with the Department of Workforce Development and the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Dantoin's attorney Paul Kinne details six examples of harassment.

The description of each incident includes one of two officers who resigned from the department late last year after an internal investigation into harassment allegations was launched.

Alleged transgressions inlcude: the former officer pushing Dantoin out of the way, the former officer taking Dantoin's handcuffs and either losing or destroying them, and the former officer and other unnamed officers insulting Dantoin for not being married, referring to her as a "crazy single cat lady."

The complaint states Dantoin complained to two supervisors on numerous occasions, but neither of them reportedly took any action to quell the behavior.

The Department of Workforce Development sent a letter to the city on June 21, stating it has until July 21 to respond to the complaint.

Green Bay Police has not wrapped up its internal investigation.

Chief Andrew Smith says there is no timeline for when it will be finished.

"(The investigation) is very thorough and very detailed.  We want to make sure we get everything right."

Smith says he cannot comment on Dantoin's complaint.

"Because the investigation is ongoing and the city attorney is looking at the allegations that were made, obviously we can't discuss that until the complaint is done.  Once the complaint is completed and penalties, if there are any, have been assessed, then that complete complaint is going to be made public to everybody."

Smith has a message for the public.

"I assure you the police department has zero tolerance for harassment or discrimination of any kind. We've got a great bunch of officers here, men and women, out there every day and every night, working hard, treating each other and the public right.  That's not stopping the good work that's getting done by our department every day."

PHILADELPHIA, PA (WTAQ) - The Milwaukee Brewers started well, but the wheels came off in the sith inning and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Brewers 6-1 on Friday.

Starting pitcher Matt Garza allowed two runs in the first inning, but tightened up for the next four. It was reliever Carlos Torres that blew the game open, allowing four hits and four runs without finishing the sixth inning.

Apart from a Brett Phillips RBI in the second inning, the Brewers had no answer at the plate, recording only six hits. Five were against Phillies starter Aaron Nola, who pitched seven complete innings.

This was the sixth-straight loss for the Brewers, who remain a game ahead of the Chicago Cubs for the NL Central division lead and two games ahead of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
