FREEDOM, WI (WTAQ) - If you think it’s hard for parents to hold a college graduation party, try multiplying it by three.

Triplets from a Fox Valley family will graduate from UW-Madison this weekend in three separate commencement ceremonies.

Stephanie, Ashley, and Kyle Verhasselt of Freedom decided to end their undergraduate careers together, and then head their separate ways.

Stephanie is getting a social worker’s degree. Ashley is heading to the Medical College of Wisconsin with a biology degree. Kyle, a business grad, has a job lined up at GE Capital.

They’ve shared a meal together each week, and they’ve always tailgated during the football season.

Stephanie says their parents have relished every possible opportunity to see the triplets in Madison.

UW Extension to present options for dairy farms dealing with alfalfa shortage

PULASKI, WI (WTAQ) - The UW Extension Service will meet with dairy farmers later this month, to discuss options for feeding their cows in the wake of heavy alfalfa damage.

Forage agronomist Dan Undersander says the crop probably has its worst winter kill in over 20 years throughout the Upper Midwest.

Losses are up to 80 percent in central Wisconsin, with damage on 20 to 30 percent of fields in the southern part of the state.

Undersander said much of the alfalfa went dormant last fall without storing up nutrients – and the long winter was too much for the crop to withstand. Low areas also have a good amount of winter kill.

Officials say the situation has created a worst-case scenario for dairy farmers who are running out of forage, and are facing hay shortages.

As a result, Undersander says farmers might have to try to salvage stands they would normally replace.

The UW Extension has five meetings planned to discuss feeding options. They’ll take place May 28th in Bear Creek and Pulaski, May 29th in Kiel and Kaukauna, and May 30th in Wausau.

Prosecutors said Anderson received bank loans for development projects in Shawano, Bowler, and Cecil from 2005 to ’08 – but the loan proceeds were used for other things.

City of Green Bay pays $20,000 in police brutality settlement

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The city of Green Bay paid $20,000 to settle allegations of police brutality.

34-year-old Anthony Basler said four officers used batons, shackles, and bodily force in September of 2010 – and it caused numerous injuries to his head and body.

Police were called while his estranged wife was moving some of her belongings out. Officials said Basler got agitated, and the officers thought he was reaching for a weapon when they used force.

He was treated at a hospital for his injuries.

Basler was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and using pepper spray on police officers. The charges were later dropped, and Basler filed a damage claim for $50,000.

The city settled for $20,000, and one of the officers involved was disciplined.

Officials said there was a chance the city would lose in court, so it reached a settlement to avoid the litigation.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette said it learned about the settlement while checking damage claims filed against the city since last summer. The paper said most claims were either denied, or the plaintiffs got as low as $50 for property damage and other minor concerns.

Green Bay murder suspect reaches plea deal

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A teen charged with fatally shooting another teenager in Green Bay has reached a plea deal.

18-year-old Julio Gonzalez pled no contest Thursday to two counts related to the shooting death of 15-year-old Jeremy Teller on July 31, 2012. Teller's friend was also injured.

A trial that was scheduled for Monday has been canceled.

According to police, the suspects drove to the Smith Street home looking for another man they had a fight with earlier in the day. Teller was not involved in the earlier fight -- but was shot leaving the home. Police say he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Gonzalez was originally charged with first-degree intentional homicide, attempted first-degree intentional homicide and being a felon in possession of a firearm. In the plea deal, he pleaded no contest to reduced charges of first-degree reckless homicide and second-degree recklessly endangering safety. The gun possession charge was dropped.

That means instead of facing a mandatory life prison term, if he had been convicted of the intentional homicide charge, Gonzalez faces a maximum of 60 years on the reckless homicide charge. The recklessly endangering safety count carries a maximum 10-year term, as opposed to 60 years for attempted homicide.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 5 before Judge Marc Hammer.

Several others were charged for their role in the incident, but only Gonzalez faced homicide charges.

Daniel Kuehl's body was found in his home on North Ashland Avenue early Saturday morning.

Police made the ruling after reviewing the autopsy and meeting with the medical examiner.

Investigators are not releasing the cause of Kuehl’s death at this time.

Police continue to review evidence that was taken from Kuehl’s home following his death. Testing has already begun at the State Crime Lab in Madison.

ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) - The WIAA girls state basketball tournament may be staying at the Resch Center for a little longer.

The WIAA Board of Control has voted unanimously to open contract talks with PMI Entertainment Group  for an extension through 2020.

“We’ve had an abundance of time since the tournament has ended to evaluate the whole experience and the sentiment has been universally positive,” WIAA Executive Director Dave Anderson told FOX 11. “We recognize when there’s a good fit in the right place for our tournaments. Now the Board has approved seeking to extend that agreement.”

The girls state tournament moved from Madison after 37 years to the Resch Center because of scheduling issues this season and was received with overwhelming support. The tournament’s attendance was more than 39,000 and that was without a local Division 1 school in the field.

In 2012, attendance for the girls state tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison was around 30,000.

Anderson said he was confident the tournament would be a success at the Resch Center.

“It didn’t surprise me or us,” Anderson said. “We were grateful (because) you never know for certain what the experience will be like not having been there. In doing our homework and doing our research, we wouldn’t have put it some place if we had a sense of impending failure. We were optimistic about it and extremely pleased.”

The Green Bay Coast Guard Station held an open house to raise awareness about the event. The event featured safe kayak demonstrations, free boat safety checks and more.

Officials want to everyone to wear their life jacket, not drink and boat, and to take boat safety classes. They also say you should always have a plan before heading out onto the water.

"Many times people are in a rush, they want to get on the water, they want to go and have fun. Make a plan before you go. Let someone know where you're going and just be prepared before you go out there," CPO Kyle Dupree with the Green Bay Coast Guard station told FOX 11. \

National Safe Boating Week runs until May 24th.

Organizers ensure changes made for smoother Cellcom Green Bay Marathon

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Runners in the 2013 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon were noticing a lot of changes to this year's event.

Organizers say they wanted to be better prepared following last year's heat-related problems and the tragedy of the Boston Marathon.

“In the last few years, we dealt with course errors a few years ago, last year we dealt with heat, a month ago the whole world changed in this sport with what happened in Boston, so it's relieving to see everything going smooth,” Race Director Sean Ryan told FOX 11.

Race officials made sure it was a safer environment this weekend for its more than 13,000 participants.

A medical tent was added to every mile along the route. The medical tent at the end of the race more than doubled and overall staffing tripled compared to last year.

“Even though we're still a mid-sized event, we have the resources of a major event, so we can withstand a lot more that mother nature has to offer us,” said Ryan.

“I noticed that the medical tents seemed to be very well staffed as you got through,” said Ethan Treptow of Green Bay. “There was always multiple people at each medical tent, so that was good.”

Organizers also prepared for the unexpected, which is what happened at last month's Boston Marathon. Uniformed security was doubled compared to last year, including contracted security along with police and sheriff officials.

“Whether its stray bags, suspicious behavior, anything out of the ordinary, so they're our eyes and ears,” said Ryan.

Ordinary is what the race weekend ended up being, which was just fine for those involved.

“This year not quite as hot, so that was a good thing,” said Treptow

TOWN OF HARTLAND, WI (WTAQ) - Green Bay police say they're questioning several people following a high speed chase that began in the city and ended up in Shawano County.

The vehicle ran over the tire spikes and stopped.

The driver and several passengers were detained by Green Bay police for questioning.

Officer-involved shooting in Town of Menasha Sunday

TOWN OF MENASHA, WI (WTAQ) - A Town of Menasha police officer is under investigation after shooting at a man for showing a gun.

Police were investigating an armed robbery at the PDQ Food Store on Racine Street around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The shooting incident happened one block away at the Citgo gas station.

"The man was armed with a black colored handgun, and he made some movements, had the handgun pointed in the direction of the officer," Town of Menasha Police Officer Jason Weber told FOX 11.

Police say the incident in the Citgo gas station parking lot was because the 24-year-old suspect had just robbed the PDQ Food Store a block away. Authorities aren't sure how much money he took.

They say once the suspect showed a gun, a 13-year veteran officer on the force took action.

"The officer did respond with firing two shots towards the suspect. None of the shots did strike the suspect and he was taken into custody right after that," Weber said.

This is the second officer involved shooting in the Town of Menasha in the last month.

Winnebago County investigators ruled an officer was justified when he shot and killed 66-year-old Wilson Lutz, who had a 12-gauge shotgun pointed at police.

"Not really sure what the community is coming to here with two uses of deadly force in the last month, but this again is something our agency really hasn't had to face," said Weber.

Officers said the suspect, who has not yet been identified, was taken to the hospital as a precaution. They are investigating both the robbery and the use of force by the officer.

Local veterans official disagrees with Gwen Moore military culture link to sexual assaults

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - Wisconsin Congresswoman Gwen Moore is causing controversy with her comments regarding a possible link between military culture and a rise in sexual assaults among troops.

Appearing on MSNBC Sunday, the Milwaukee Democrat told host Alex Witt, "When you look at the mission of the military and military culture, which is about aggression and about war, it shouldn't surprise us at all that sexual assault would emerge as a huge issue that they need to look at."

President of the United Patriotic Society Larry Heyrman disagrees with that statement.

"You're trained to do you job," says Heyrman. "And I don't think it makes you more aggressive towards woman, sexual-wise."

Heyrman admits that it's a different world for military members. In the 1950's when Heyrman served, it was an all-male military. However, Heyrman says sexual assault training takes place, and doesn't feel the military culture breeds aggressive sexual action.

The military recently announced the results of a survey that estimated there were 26,000 instances of unwanted sexual conduct among troops in 2012. That's up 35 percent from 2010.
