BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - Charges have been filed against a Chicago man for stealing credit cards from health club locker rooms in Brown County.

42-year-old Nicholas Soteras is facing 8 total counts in connection with the case.

Back in October, investigators first reported the thefts. Authorities provided a description of the suspect and informed local health clubs of the crimes. For a few months afterward, there were no reported thefts. But in March they started up again.

Sheriff’s officials say the Soteras was jailed in Illinois for unlawful possession of credit cards between November and February.

Invesitgators say the suspect went into locker rooms and picked locks, took credit cards and then re-secured the lockers.

Authorities say their break in the case came last Thursday, when an employee of the Eastside YMCA in Green Bay saw a person matching a suspect description that had been released. While at the YMCA, authorities called the Western Racquet and Fitness Club in Ashwaubenon to warn the business to be on the lookout. Minutes later, an employee called authorities to report the suspect; the employee also gave a description of the man’s vehicle. Officers stopped the vehicle as it headed south on Interstate 43 and arrested Soteras and a second person, who was questioned and later released.

Brown County officials say they are working with authorities in several counties in eastern Wisconsin to investigate similar thefts as well as purchases Soteras is believed to have made with the stolen credit cards. Items purchased include iPads, tools and cameras.

Soteras is scheduled to appear in Brown County court on Friday.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - As part of National Peace Officers' Memorial Day Wednesday, the Green Bay Police Department is holding a silent watch at the Community Tribute to Law Enforcement Memorial.

That's in front of the department's headquarters at 307 S. Adams Street in downtown Green Bay.

Officers will stand watch in silence in front of the memorial from sunrise to sunset to honor those killed in the line of duty, those who serve, and those who are serving.

"What we are representing here is not only the profession, the officers that serve us still, the officers that have served us in the past, and unfortunately those that gave the ultimate sacrifice of being killed in the line of duty," Green Bay Assistant Police Chief Lisa Sterr says.

In Fond du Lac, the police department will honor the memory of three of its own officers who gave their lives in the line of duty, including Officer Craig Birkholz who was shot and killed in the line of duty in March 2011.

A memorial ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m. at the Hamilton Park Public Safety Memorial Site on Sophia Street. The public is invited to attend.

United States and Wisconsin flags will be flown at half-staff Wednesday in honor of law enforcement who have been killed in the line of duty.

Officials say the risk of more wildfires is very high in most of the Badger State – and hazardous conditions are expected to continue until there’s a change in the weather pattern.

Trent Marty of the state DNR says his agency asks that no campfires be made, and people should not smoke in wooded and grassy areas.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Officials at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay have received an investigator's report into allegations of abuse against men's basketball coach Brian Wardle.

The investigation involved allegations of verbal and emotional abuse by Wardle. The investigation began last month, led by local attorney Joe Nicks.

The mother of former UWGB Phoenix player Ryan Bross sent a letter to the school, which sparked the investigation. A second parent, the mother of former forward Brennan Cougill, also sent a letter upset about Wardle's coaching.

According to the school, Chancellor Tom Harden said Wednesday that the University will publicly release the investigator’s report as soon as it is legally permissible to do so.

Because the allegations arise out of Wardle’s employment at the University, the Wisconsin Public Records law requires the institution to provide a notification to him that the report will be publicly released.

Wardle has up to 10 days to review his copy of the report and challenge whether all or part of the document should be released.

Before the report and any decision are released to the public, Harden is planning to meet with Wardle.

The Chancellor said the University will have no further comment until the report is made public.

Brad Toll is President of the Greater Green Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau and says they would have some concerns if the TBS show portrays the community and fans in a negative light.

Toll says they spend a lot of money advertising the area and promoting a positive image.

“Cheeseheads” is a working title for the show that is being produced by a man who also helped to produce MTV’s “Real World”, and the “Bachelor”.

The show follows diehard Packers fans and the hilarious subculture that ensues.

The show was pitched to advertisers in New York Wednesday.

No timetable has been set for the show.

Wisconsin Supreme Court won't review Felton's baby death conviction

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The Wisconsin Supreme Court has denied a Brown County man's petition to hear an appeal to his conviction for killing his four-month-old son.

Online court records show that the court declined Jeremiah Felton's petition.

Felton is serving a life prison sentence after he slammed his son's head into a bathroom door in June, 2008. He is eligible for parole in 2040.

A state appeals court denied his appeal in 2012 , writing:

"Felton seeks a new trial either in the interest of justice or because his trial counsel was ineffective. Both theories rely on the same two premises: the jury was not apprised of expert testimony on shaken baby syndrome that contradicted that of the State's experts, and the prosecutor incorrectly stated during closing argument that a jailhouse informant could not receive anything in return for his testimony. We conclude that Felton fails to demonstrate that his proffered expert testimony substantially conflicted with the State's case and that the prosecutor's statement was not sufficiently harmful. We therefore affirm."

MARINETTE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - Marinette County sheriff's say a man is recovering after being attacked by a black bear.

Authorities say Gerre Ninnemann was in Silver Cliff at a cabin when he heard his dog barking Wednesday. That's when Ninnemann saw the bear going after his dog. He called the dog back and tried to run inside the house, but the bear ran Ninnemann down from behind and took him to the ground, biting him and clawing his back.

Ninnemann was able to get up, but the bear caught him and attacked him again.

Ninnemann's wife Marie tells FOX 11 she grabbed a gun from the basement and some shells, and her husband told her to shoot it. She said she never shot a gun before and didn't know how to load it.

That's when Marie hit the bear over the head with the gun trying to get it away from her husband.

The bear let go and Gerre was able to get the shotgun from Marie and used it as a stick, trying to poke it so they could get back in the cabin.

The bear continued to circle the cabin, and looked in every window. It didn't want to leave.

Sheriff's deputy Daniel Beauchamp arrived on scene and saw what appeared to be a juvenile bear in the driveway. The deputy got out of the squad car and once the bear got closer to him, the deputy shot and killed the bear.

Gerre Ninnemann was taken to a local hospital. We don't know his condition. However, officials say he had bite marks from his belt line up to the back of his head along with cuts and scratches.

The bear is being tested for rabies.
