Kohl Slams Clinton Email Probe

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Former U.S. Senator Herb Kohl is the latest politician reacting to the renewed FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails.

"I'm disappointed, I don't think it's fair," Kohl (D-Wisconsin) said when asked about the controversy on Monday. "He (FBI Director James Comey) brings up a renewal of an investigation that was closed last summer, while at the same time offering no facts about why he's doing it. That's deeply unsettling and troubling in a democracy."

Kohl, who made an appearance at Democratic of Brown County headquarters in Green Bay, called Comey's decision "unprecedented".

"I think the American people have always felt that, at some level, politics needs to be fair and I do believe that he's gone beyond that proposition in what he did," said Kohl.

Comey's letter last Friday notified members of Congress that the FBI had discovered new emails apparently pertinent to the Clinton server probe. It came during a separate investigation into former Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-New York), who is the estranged husband of top Clinton aide Huma Abedin.

Despite the news coming 11 days before Election Day, Kohl isn't sure what kind of impact it will have on voters who will cast a ballot on November 8.

"I would like to hope that people, either pro or con, have made up their mind," Kohl said.

According to a RealClearPolitics aggregate poll (with a range of October 20 to October 30), Clinton holds a 3.1 point advantage (48.0-44.9) over Trump.

Kohl did formally endorse Clinton, along with Democratic candidate in the 8th Congressional District Thomas Nelson. Nelson, the Outagamie County Executive, is battling political newcomer and Republican Mike Gallagher.

SOONER RATHER THAN LATER

The 81-year-old Kohl called on Comey to release those facts surrounding his revived investigation into Clinton's emails promptly.

"He has to talk about that in the next several days," Kohl stated. "You do not take a human being, let alone a presidential candidate, and hang them out to dry."

In letters to Congressional members on Monday, Assistant Attorney General Peter Kadzik relayed the Justice Department was dedicating "all necessary resources" to work with the FBI on its examination of the newly discovered emails "as expeditiously as possible."

But how soon that might happen was not made clear, according to one official familiar with the FBI review. Nelson, when asked about his reaction to the story, was vaguer than Kohl in his response.

"I think we're going to see play itself out in the next couple of days," says Nelson. "There really isn't a lot of information outside of what has trickled down of the last couple of days so I think we'll wait to see more."

UNPRECEDENTED ELECTION YEAR

Kohl won his U.S. Senate seat during the 1988 election, and prior to that served as Chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party from 1975 to 1977. This election year, he admits, is unlike any before and not just because he's seen a few.

"I think most people, who are of any age, say that they've never seen an election like this because it has not been civil," Kohl says. "Hillary Clinton's campaign has been civil. You may or may not agree with her positions, but she's been civil. Well, with Donald Trump you've had something different."

Trump's campaign, Kohl explained, has been full of, "divisiveness, anger, demeaning his opponents." He admits that while the business mogul has attracted large crowds, Trump himself encouraged that very divisiveness. Kohl also went after Trump's lack of experience.

"Being president is not an entry-level job," says Kohl. "In my opinion, his lone position is because I've been a successful business person, therefore at age 70 I can be on day one a successful president? Well, that's debatable."

Kohl went on to praise Clinton, whom he says he's known for 25 years, as having, "all the qualities that I look for. I know she will be a good president."

ONEIDA, WI (WTAQ) - A single vehicle rollover crash has claimed the life of a teenager, while sending four others to the hospital.

The Outagamie County Sheriff's Department says they were called around 10 p.m. Monday for the accident on Bain Road just west of County Highway U in the Town of Oneida.

"A mid-sized SUV was westbound on Bain, the vehicle lost control, rolled over and struck a power pole, breaking the power pole off before coming to a rest," says Lt. Terry Hammen of the Outagamie County Sheriff's Department. "There was five occupants of the vehicle ranging in age from 13 to 18."

A 13-year-old boy was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He was identified Tuesday afternoon as Braxton Kasee of the Seymour area. The other 4 victims were taken to a hospital by ambulance.

"It looked like it was a straight drive, they're driving straight from what the accident report said," Hammen says, adding that a vehicle that size could easily have enough impact at a slow speed to break the power pole.

There is no update on the conditions of the other 4 teenagers.

While on the scene, a 65-year-old volunteer firefighter with the Town of Oneida Fire Department complained of feeling ill while setting up a landing zone for the aeromedical helicopter. The man was treated on scene and taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay where he was pronounced dead.

In a statement by the fire department, officials are treating this as a line of duty death. The name of the firefighter will be released upon final notification of family members.

"This tragedy coupled with the tragic outcome of the incident which brought our fire department to the scene weighs heavy on us as an organization and community," the statement read. "We ask that you please keep the family of our fallen brother, and the rest of the Oneida Fire Department and community in your thoughts as we navigate these difficult times."

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Just a week before Election Day, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani came to Green Bay in order to stump for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

"Donald Trump is a shrewd businessman who knows how to get things done," Giuliani said during his speech at the Rock Garden.

Giuliani described Trump's human side, saying he's made mistakes but has learned from them to become a better person.

"One thing he's learned is that you can't do it alone," says Giuliani. "Trump will surround himself with the best people and let them do their job."

Later Tuesday, Trump himself will make a campaign stop in Eau Claire. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is expected to be in attendance for the 6 p.m. event.

Not to be outdone, Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine is scheduled to hold a rally at Lawrence University in Appleton at 2:15 p.m.

Wisconsin has 10 electoral votes that both campaigns are looking to secure on Election Day.

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - Democratic vice presidential hopeful Tim Kaine is making his first campaign appearance in northeast Wisconsin exactly one week before Election Day.

Kaine is headlining a campaign rally Tuesday on the campus of Lawrence University in Appleton. Also appearing with the Virginia Senator were Wisconsin state Representative Amanda Stuck (D-Appleton), U.S. Senate candidate Russ Feingold and U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin).

Hundreds of people attended the event to hear about Kaine and his running mate, Hillary Clinton, and what they will do should they win the White House.

Many of those at the Warch Campus Center say they have already voted in-person absentee and don't feel the FBI's reopening of the investigation into Clinton's emails while she was secretary of state would have them change their mind.

Regardless, Jack Mattner of Chilton, isn't too happy about the FBI making that decision so close to Election Day.

"They didn't even have a warrant yet, so it's really premature, so then keep your mouth shut."

Attendees hope that Kaine will focus on issues more important to the nation as a whole, rather than focusing on the email scandal.

On the Republican side, Wisconsin hosted a pair of events for presidential nominee Donald Trump on Tuesday. The first was an appearance in Green Bay by former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Trump, along with Giuliani and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, will hold a campaign rally in Eau Claire Tuesday evening.
