GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is heading to Green Bay this week.

Trump plans to campaign in Green Bay around 6 p.m. Friday at a venue yet to be named.

"Wisconsin is in play, also Brown County is very crucial and we've always known that," says Marian Krumberger, chairwoman of the Republican Party of Brown County. "We know that he will do well, he will win Brown County. But we need to have a very good turnout and a really strong showing for him to take the state of Wisconsin."

It's his first visit to Wisconsin since before April's primary. Trump lost that primary election to Texas Senator Ted Cruz. Krumberger believes getting the support from both Governor Scott Walker and House Speaker Paul Ryan will be a boost for Trump.

This comes amid a growing dispute between the business mogul and the parents of a Muslim U.S. Army officer killed in the Iraq war.

"You know we need to stay focused on issues," Krumberger says in answering a question about the controversy. "The issues being security for all of us, our economy and that's what everyone needs to be focused on."

Gov. Walker said on Sunday that the parents of Army Captain Humayun Khan should be off limits.

"I've gone to too many funerals, met too many families. What they've sacrificed is just unbelievable," said Walker.

MADISON, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network) - A new poster aims to raise awareness of human trafficking in Wisconsin.

Attorney General Brad Schimel calls it “modern day slavery,” and a challenging criminal enterprise. “I’ve never seen cases more challenging than when we try bring human trafficking cases to prosecution,” Schimel said at a press conference to introduce the poster.

The poster includes a toll-free number and can be downloaded free from an informational state website: BeFreeWisconsin.com.

Creation of the poster was required by the passage last year of Wisconsin Act 5, aimed at strengthening the state’s response to human trafficking.

State Representative Amy Loudenbeck (R-Clinton), was one of the authors of the legislation. Loudenbeck said the hotline number will be answered by staff at the Polaris Project, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., that has operated the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline since 2007.

Loudenbeck said the hotline is an essential component in addressing human trafficking.

“It is the number one most important thing that you can do to increase the incidence of reporting a case human trafficking,” she said. “It doesn’t necessarily lead to prosecution, but it is the number one thing that increases awareness.’

His son was taken to the hospital. He has since been released.

Investigators believe alcohol and speed were factors. The crash remains under investigation.

Tools for School Gets Donation

DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) - Back to school shopping is in full swing and for parents having to check off all the items on their child's list, the cost can really add up.

When it comes to the shopping part, Abby Baetke of Neenah tells FOX 11 she has a strategy.

"We kind of have done bits, and pieces of it, and we didn't want to do it all at once, and overwhelm myself or my son," said Baetke.

She says between pencils, pens, and new gym shoes, it's something that her family usually budgets for.

"I mean it does add up in cost, I won't say it's terrible, but yea it's definitely something. It's August, we got to put a little money aside for this," said Baetke.

Stephanie Warnke, who teaches 6th grade in the Howard-Suamico School District, says she also has to budget for school supplies.

"Just knowing that some students aren't going to have everything, so what they don't have we can supply that for them," said Warnke.

The Brown County Salvation Army says school supply lists for one child can cost up to $100. That's why they have programs like Tools for School, which provides school supplies for lower income families.

On Monday, Shopko and the Greenleaf-Wrightstown Optimist Club each donated $500 worth of school supplies to the program.

Nan Pahl with the Brown County Salvation Army says each donation makes a difference.

"This program really gives children the opportunity that they blend in just like everybody else. So they get that, and they say my crayons smell so good, because they have that new crayon smell," said Pahl.

Brett Favre's Marketing Impact

UNDATED (WTAQ) - Brett Favre will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this weekend.

But the Green Bay Packers legend meant more to the team and the NFL than just winning on the field.

"Brett Favre was almost the perfect storm, as it were, for sports marketing, particularly here in Green Bay," says Kevin Quinn, Dean of the Donald J. Schneider School of Business and Economics at St. Norbert College in De Pere. "He was colorful, good-looking guy, kind of an everyman, unassuming especially early on, good ol' boy who liked to have fun and here in Green Bay, we like to have fun we know that."

Favre became the starter for the Green Bay Packers in the fourth game of the 1992 season. The next year, the Fox television network bid $1.58 billion to get the broadcast rights for NFC football. The NFL accepted the bid, which topped CBS' offer. That 1993 season culminated in Favre leading the Packers to the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

"The money in the 1990s, partly because of a booming economy and a consumer booming economy, and partly because sports were recognized as crossover more generally, the money just flowed in," Quinn says. "He benefitted from Michael Jordan, he was concurrent with Tiger Woods in some ways, but those sports figures were probably more dominant in marketing then, than they probably are now."

The gunslinger from Kiln, Mississippi, won the first of his 3 MVP awards in 1995. That next season, Favre would lead the Packers to a win in Super Bowl 31 over the New England Patriots. The game was Fox's first Super Bowl under their initial TV contract.

"As big as the NFL was in the 1980s, they took a step up in the 1990s," explains Quinn. "During the 90s, as the NBA began to fade a little bit after the Jordan years, all of a sudden you had the NFL and Brett Favre. He was the right person at the right place at the right time that he just became bigger than life."

Favre was such a "crossover" star, in 1998 he made a famous cameo in the hit movie There's Something About Mary starring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz. Add in the number of national endorsements for products like Wrangler jeans, Nike, Sears and MasterCard, you have a guy who companies put their trust in.

Quinn adds not to mention what became a fashion staple during that decade

"Here in Green Bay, you would see people at the bank wearing a Packers shirt instead of a suit and tie and that was considered normal here. That was not true everywhere else, but it is now," says Quinn. "The NFL, I think, became more of a merchandising brand company during the 1990s at the same time this was happening. So he was their ''L’Oréal spokesperson' in a sense. Truly from a fashion and lifestyle and brand identification point of view, more just than football."

Fast forward 10 years and there was a messy divorce between Favre and the Packers, which culminated in his trade to the New York Jets. The next year, he would sign with the rival Minnesota Vikings completing the angry fallout from his departure from Green Bay. Despite all of that history, Quinn says Favre remains a strong brand.

"Two things are in play, one time heals all wounds and instead of focusing on that difficult time when the Packers had made the decision to move on before he was ready to move on, and how the fans reacted to that," Quinn says. "I also think there's a greater recognition about the degree to which that this is a business. This idea of loyalty is a little bit of a fiction, we don't want to admit that but it is."

Quinn believes that the appeal of someone like Brett Favre not only hits people in the heart because he's a Packer, but because his is a story of redemption and with the younger generation more apt to learning history, the legend of Favre can continue to live on.

"It's a personal thing, yes he was a great football player, but there was something about him personally that you cared about what he was doing. People that make mistakes, and rebound from those mistakes, American is the land of second chances," says Quinn. "I walk around campus and I hear classic rock from the 60s and the 70s coming out of the dorm rooms. We would've never listened to stuff that was 40 or 50 years old when I was in college. Now that retro stuff is cool, young people are more willing to look at what people who came before them did. Think about somebody who's 10 or 12-years-old, they don't remember Brett Favre other than just as a former player, and I would be willing to guess, especially here in Green Bay, they're going to pay attention to him for a long, long time."

The exact time and location for Trump's visit will be revealed here sometime after 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Republican Party of Brown County chairwoman Marian Krumberger said Monday that a location was not known, but the campaign rally is expected to be at 6 p.m. on Friday.

"Wisconsin is in play, also Brown County is very crucial and we've always known that," says Krumberger. "We know that he will do well, he will win Brown County. But we need to have a very good turnout and a really strong showing for him to take the state of Wisconsin."

WATCH: Johnson Won't Attend Trump Rally

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is scheduled to appear in Green Bay on Friday.

But you can count U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) out of appearing with the business mogul.

"My problem is we've already got my schedule planned out, and these stops end up being so short notice that I make commitments. I'm a business guy and I actually honor those commitments," Johnson said Tuesday. "So I don't figure I'll be able to join him."

Johnson, who's seeking re-election against former Democratic U.S. Senator Russ Feingold, did have something to say about Trump's war of words with the family of a fallen Muslim-American soldier.

"We should only honor and respect Gold Star parents and the service of the finest among us who've made the ultimate sacrifice," says Johnson. "I disagree with any statement issued by anybody that doesn't show full respect and full honor to those Gold Star parents and the sacrifice of their loved ones."

Trump's criticism of Khizr Khan and Ghazala Khan, who took the stage at last week's Democratic convention, sparked growing concern and dismay from Republican lawmakers.

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - It was a busier year at EAA AirVenture than in 2015.

According to EAA, attendance was about 563,000 during the seven-day convention. That's up 1 percent from last year. Officials say attendees are counted each day they enter the gates, so the attendance figure includes some attendees who were counted more than once.

A record 2,369 registered international visitors from 80 countries attended AirVenture this year. The top countries represented were Canada, with 578 attendees, Australia, with 340, and Argentina, with 167.

“Our attendance was particularly outstanding, since we had some weather challenges mid-week compared to seven perfect days in 2015," EAA Chairman Jack Pelton said in a news release. "Our grounds crew and our volunteers, who number more than 5,000, did a superb job keeping the site ready for visitors and campers who arrived by ground or by air.”

More than 10,000 aircraft arrived at area airports during the convention.

AirVenture included 2,855 showplanes, 1,124 homebuilt aircraft, 1,032 vintage airplanes, 371 warbirds, 135 ultralights and light-sport aircraft, 101 seaplanes, 31 rotorcraft, 41 aerobatic aircraft and 20 non-categorized aircraft.

There were also 891 commercial exhibitors, a 10 percent increase from 2015.

Highlights of this year's AirVenture included performances by the Snowbirds, a military stunt team from Canada, and a visit from actor Harrison Ford, whose flight with an Illinois teen marked the 2 millionth of the Young Eagles program. The Hawaii Martin Mars, the world's largest flying water bomber, was forced to drop out of the Saturday air show after it was damaged when it hit something under the water of Lake Winnebago during a demonstration.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - For the 19th year, the Taste on Broadway will be serving hungry visitors on Thursday.

"Taste on Broadway is our premier foodie event of the year," says Ahnna Dexter, Project Manager for On Broadway, Incorporated. "If you love the premier restaurants in Green Bay, this is definitely the right event."

About 20 of the area's top restaurants will be offering their favorite menu items, along with local breweries and wineries pouring their specially crafted products. Thousands are expected to attend the event, which shuts down the historic Broadway District in downtown Green Bay.

"We were up against a Packers pre-season game last year," Dexter says, estimating about 8,000 visitors in 2015. "So we're definitely hoping for a lot more than that this year."

Tokens will be available for purchase the day of the event. Booths will be located at the North and South ends of the event. Tokens are like cash, you will exchange money for tokens $1=1 token. Menu items are priced between 1 and 5 tokens.

There will also be live music featuring:

  • Main Stage 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. The Dirty Martini's
  • Main Stage 7 p.m. - 11 p.m. Big Mouth and The Powertool Horns
  • South Stage 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Unity the Band

Dexter says a new wrinkle this year will be their Taste of Colour, which will happen on the Hubbard Avenue cul-de-sac starting at 8 p.m.

"The whole street gets lit up and then Skaliwags will be serving three different menu items that are paired with a different color," explains Dexter. "So he'll have his food and a craft cocktail paired with it to match that color."

Those will cost 12 token each. You can find out more about the Taste on Broadway here.

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - Milwaukee police say a Green Bay man was shot while trying to buy drugs in the city on Monday night.

FOX 6 in Milwaukee reports that the 30-year-old man was approached by a male suspect on near Teutonia and Locust. The suspect robbed the man, then shot him.

The victim drove himself to a nearby fire station for help and crashed into the garage door. He was then taken to a hospital for treatment.

"The initial report that this was related to a shooting, so there's a whole measure of trauma care that goes into dealing with those wounds because a lot of internal damage can occur, so they sort all that out, stabilize the patient and get that patient going," said Milwaukee deputy chief, Aaron Lipski.

Milwaukee Police are still investigating.

Patience Urged in Voting Rules

MADISON, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network) - State election officials are urging patience, as they sort through recent federal court rulings on Wisconsin voting laws.

A federal judge on Friday struck down several changes Republicans have made to state election laws in recent years, which included restrictions on early voting hours and locations.

In a separate case, a federal judge in Milwaukee last month ordered the state to make it easier for those without a photo ID to obtain a ballot.

The state Department of Justice plans to appeal both rulings, but it’s possible they will be in effect for the November elections if neither decision is stayed.

Wisconsin Elections Commission spokesman Reid Magney says staff is working to address those changes, and hopes to provide guidance to local clerks in the coming days.

“We are consulting with the Department of Justice, we are making plans…and we hope to be communicating with clerks and voters in the days and weeks after the primary about what changes are coming.”

None of the judge’s orders will impact next Tuesday’s primary election for several congressional, legislative, and district attorney races.

Magney says they are trying to use caution right now, so they don’t confuse voters before then.

“We need to be making preparations. However, nothing applies to next Tuesday and we don’t want to confuse things.”

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - It's a night where police officers get to know the community they serve a little bit better.

Tuesday law enforcement locally and around the nation participated in National Night Out, an event that promotes a partnership between the community and police.

Mather Heights Park was filled with police officers, squad cars and even a S.W.A.T vehicle, as part of the event.

Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith spoke with FOX 11.

“I think it's important for people to know that the police we have here in Green Bay are the same folks that live down the street."

Smith along with Mayor Jim Schmit stopped by several neighborhood cook outs, Mather Heights was their second stop.

"That's the best crime prevent program we can have here, is if we have neighbors getting out to support each other,” explained Mayor Schmit.

"We had a very long stretch without any real serious, violent crimes like shootings and things of that nature, so we are really fortune here in Green Bay to live in such a safe community,” added Smith.

Nationally 16,000 communities participate in this event.
