Packers Players Bunk In, Get Down To Business

DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) - Grab your bag and find a bunk.  Sunday was move in day for Packers training camp.

Packers rookie linebacker Blake Martinez was one of the first to arrive.

"It's a weird feeling in a sense because it's the same set up I had in college. I don't know if its purposely that the rookies are on the third floor and having to bring all of the stuff up, but that's where I am at right now, and that's where I was as a freshman at Stanford."

Packers offensive lineman JC Tretter knows the drill.

"I can pretty much sleep on anything. I know some people need the pampered feather beds and stuff but I can sleep on a couch or any type of mattress so that stuff doesn't matter to me. I think everyone has their own thoughts and choices on what they want to bring, but it all depends."

There are certainly butterflies for the rookies going through this experience for the first time.

McCormick Hall is the home of the Packers officially until August 13th.

The veterans, like Tretter, are intermixing with the rookies and there certainly will be some little brother, big brother going on, as this team grows and gets to know each other.

"The older guys will razz you a little bit, but I think we do a good job of just getting everybody to have a good time. To have an older guy razz you a little bit will loosen you up and I think that's a good thing at some point."

Training camp starts Tuesday.

ALGOMA, WI (WTAQ) - Thousands of anglers are taking to the waters of Lake Michigan this week, looking for that prize-winning salmon.

Door and Kewaunee County make up the boundaries for the tournament, and all that activity along the Lakeshore brings a boost to the local economy.

Howard Heinonen has been fishing the Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament for years.

"It seems like the fish are bigger. Normally we come here, we average 14-15 pounds. Now, there seems to be quite a few 20 pounders being caught"

The Kewaunee/Door County Tournament covers five different ports including Algoma, where fire damaged boats in the marina about a month ago.

Kevin Naze is Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament Coordinator.

"Everything's come back to normal again. Even when the marina was closed for three days, we do have an upriver launch at Olson Park where any boat 20 feet and under could launch"

Naze says over the course of the nine days, about 3,000 fishermen could contribute about $1 million to the area ecomony.

"You got to buy your new baits, you got to buy your gas. You got to have lodging, you got to support the bars and restaurants, and coffee shops, and gift shops. Everybody spends hundreds of dollars. You can do the math, it's a lot of money"

The 34th annual Kewaunee Door County Salmon tournament runs through next Sunday.

The total in cash and prizes adds up to more than $50,000.

GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ) - Appleton police are releasing more information about a crime spree which began in Grand Chute and ended in Brown County Saturday evening.

In a statement Monday, police are referring a charge of strong arm robbery against 36-year-old Michael J. Lawrenz of Random Lake.

Lawrenz is currently being held in the Outagamie County Jail and is not expected in court Monday.

Officials say it all began at the Pawn America store in Grand Chute around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Police were called to investigate a possible retail theft involving two men.

During a physical altercation, police say Lawrenz somehow got into a squad car and began to drive off.

"He did either back or somehow strike the vehicle that was driven by the supervisor from the Grand Chute Police Department who had arrived on scene," Sgt. Dave Lund of the Appleton Police Department said. "That collision did cause injury to the supervisor."

The officer's injuries are non-life-threatening.

Multiple police officers fired at Lawrenz as continued to drive away. Lawrenz was hit by a bullet.

Authorities say Lawrenz drove into Appleton with the police lights on and stopped a vehicle in the 1500 block of W. Fourth Street. Lawrenz allegedly approached the vehicle and used physical force to remove a 35-year-old Appleton woman from her vehicle and drove off in it.

The woman was not hurt during the carjacking.

Brown County deputies located the woman's stolen vehicle traveling northbound on I-41 and stopped the vehicle and took Lawrenz into custody.

Appleton Police say Lawrenz admitted to his criminal involvement during an interview with detectives.

The Appleton Police Department is investigating the incident as it involves the use of force by Grand Chute police officers. No word on the number of officers involved.

According to online court records, Lawrenz has multiple open cases in four Wisconsin counties for retail theft, bail jumping and traffic violations.

UNDATED (WTAQ) - Criminal charges will not be filed against Marinette County sheriff's deputies in the shooting death of an armed man.

Officials say they located Rasmussen on Highway 141 after getting an alert from Madison police that he was suicidal and a danger to authorities. They also said Rasmussen was headed to the Northwoods where he had family.

Deputies said they tried to negotiate with Rasmussen, but he threatened to shoot officers. Eventually, according to sheriff's officials, he stopped, got out of his vehicle with a gun, and ignored deputies' commands to drop his gun. Three deputies then fatally shot him.

Lawsuit Filed In Neenah Police Standoff

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The estate of Michael Funk - who was shot and killed by Neenah police during an incident at Eagle Nation Cycles - filed a federal lawsuit against the city Monday.

Theresa Mason-Funk, his wife, is the plantiff, listed individually and as the administrator of his estate. The defendents are the city of Neenah, Office Craig Hoffer, and Officer Robert Ross.

According to the complaint:

Police responded to the store, and knew that Brian Flatoff was holding hostages.

"Michael subsequently attempted to escape from Flatoff by going out the Shop's rear entrance into the Alley. Flatoff shot at Michael as he attempted to escape. It was apparent to a reasonable person in Officer Hoffer's and Officer Ross's location that Flatoff was firing at Michael and that Michael was a hostage and was not the hostage-taker.

Michael posed no threat to Officers Hoffer and Ross or to anyone else as he attempted to escape. Nevertheless, within seconds after Michael exited the Shop, Officers Hoffer and Ross emerged from their protected position and shot Michael multiple times without giving him any warning of their presence, any warning that he might be shot, or any other instruction or communication of any sort. Many of the shots fired by Officers Hoffer and Ross struck Michael in the back. Michael fell in the Alley. After Michael fell, he was still alive. Officer Ross then shot Michael twice more." the suit alleges.

"The force used by Officers Hoffer and Ross was unnecessary, unreasonable and excessive under the circumstances of the Incident for various reasons," it states.

The suit asks for unspecified compensatory, punitive and exemplary damages.

Neenah City Attorney Jim Godlewski told Post-Crescent Media that the lawsuit will be referred to the city's defense counsel. He had no comment on the lawsuit itself.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice determined the officers thought Funk was the armed hostage taker and was a threat, and they weren't criminally responsible for his killing.

Flatoff faces trial March 13.

"We are grateful for those who have already stepped up this summer to give and want to remind those who are eligible that hospital patients are still counting on them to roll up a sleeve."

Currently, the Red Cross has less than a five-day blood supply on hand. The Red Cross strives to have a five-day supply at all times to meet the needs of patients every day and be prepared for emergencies that may require significant volumes of donated blood products.

OCONTO, WI (WTAQ) - A plea deal has been reached for one of the teens accused of spiking their teacher's drink.

On Tuesday, 18-year-old Hailey Brock of Gillett pleaded no contest to a count of placing a foreign object in an edible. Two other charges, recklessly endangering safety and disorderly conduct, are expected to be dismissed during sentencing on September 6.

The criminal complaint states that Brock confessed to putting a cleaning solution for a dry-erase board in the drink of Gillett High School staffer Ray Johnson last October 20. Brock admitted she spiked his soda with white board cleaning solution, calling it a prank, police say.

Officials also say Gavin Gilbertston helped out. He's scheduled for trial on September 27.
