GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - We're learning more about a Howard village trustee accused of sexually assaulting underage girls.

62-year-old James Widiger appeared in court Friday afternoon, just a day after he was arrested and booked into jail on two counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child.

Widiger had his bond set at $20,000 cash as prosecutors told the court they need more time to investigate. Formal charges have not been filed.

Green Bay police said Friday that there are two alleged victims right now. The ages of those victims are 14 and 26. The 26-year-old woman, police say, was assaulted back in 2003 when she was 13.

"In the investigation, we learned that these two victims had reported some behaviors that were very concerning to us and which led to referring charges over to the district attorney's office," said Green Bay Police Capt. Kevin Warych. "We learned that Widiger was giving private piano lessons. During those piano lessons, the victims reported some acts had occurred at that time."

Widiger gave private piano lessons at a space he rented at Jim's Music in Green Bay for years. However, Widiger is not the owner of Jim's Music.

In 2005, Widiger was first elected to the Howard village board.

Green Bay Police is asking that any members of the public that have additional information about Widiger to contact their local law enforcement agency. If you wish to remain anonymous, please contact Green Bay Crime Stoppers at (920) 432-STOP.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Get ready to lose one hour of sleep this weekend.

You'll need to set your clock ahead as Daylight Saving Time starts at 2:00 Sunday morning.

This is also a good time to check the batteries in your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors and make sure they're working properly.  Green Bay Assistant Fire Chief, Mike Nieft, says these products are critical in saving lives.

"Early notifications are what gives you the opportunity to get out, save your life and call us."

Nieft adds that when buying a carbon monoxide detector, it's important not to purchase the cheapest one.

"It's important that you get one that has a readout that tells you what level is alarming because it lets you know the emergency level of the situation."

You can find detectors at any home improvement store.

MENASHA, WI (WTAQ) - People are being warned to watch out for discarded needles in public places.

That's after Menasha Police say they were alerted to a needle found at Jefferson Park.

Thomas Allen walked with his nephew and two dogs on Friday, looking out for discarded needles.

"It's kinda scary, to be honest, with people walking their dogs and kids playing in the park. It's pretty, it's pretty dangerous," Allen told FOX 11.

Menasha police say they gotten about 10 calls from people finding needles across the city in the past several months.

"With the significant rise in the heroin use we believe it's strongly tied to that," explained Officer Aaron Zemlock, adding that if you do find a needle don't pick it up yourself. He advises just calling police.

The needles aren't just an issue in Menasha. Zemlock said they're being found across the Fox Valley. Another bunch of needles were found in the Town of Menasha several months ago.

"It comes down to lessening the heroin use, supporting those who need the support. Then you should see a reduction in these needles being discarded," said Zemlock.

Authorities also believe that more needles are being found due to the snow melt. They believe some of those needles could've been there for weeks, if not months.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and every year more than 50,000 people die from colorectal cancer.

Dr. Scott Stillwell is a family medicine physician at St. Gianna Clinic in Green Bay and says getting screened at the right age is very important.

"The standard age for a recommendation for a screening for colon cancer is at age 50.  But with anything in medicine, we try to tailor the recommendation according to risk factors."

One of those risk factors include family history of the disease. Every year about 140,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

Polyps are an early stage of colon cancer and screenings are key to detection.

"The goal of screening is finding colon cancer before it becomes unmanagable," says Dr. Stillwell.

Having a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables and low in red meat are pivotal in preventing this disease.

"I tell patients that over half of the products in their grocery cart when they leave the grocery store, should be from the produce department."

He says maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking are vital to prevention.

Green Bay Police Issue St. Patrick's Day Safety Message

$

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The Green Bay Police Department is urging people to plan ahead before going out to celebrate St. Patrick's Day this year.

Police ask that you make a decision to either be responsible and designated a sober driver, or decide to drink and drive. Both options have consequences.

The first consequence will see you home later that night and at your job the next day. The second can and often does end in tragic and unintended consequences, horrific and permanent injuries and even death. Not necessarily your own.

Widely celebrated across the country, St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest holidays due to the number of drunk drivers on the road.

The St. Patrick’s Day holiday period, from 2010 to 2014, saw the loss of 266 lives due to drunk-driving crashes. In 2014, alone, 29 people nationwide were killed in drunk-driving crashes over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period.

In the last 3 years, the Brown County OWI Task Force has arrested 22 people who didn’t get this message in time For St. Pat’s night. This was 22 opportunities for someone to injure or kill themselves or another member of our community when operating a vehicle while impaired.

Tragically, March 17 has become one of the nation’s deadliest holidays. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, during the 2014 St. Patrick’s Day holiday, more than a quarter (28%) of all motor vehicle crash fatalities involved drunk drivers.

Enough is enough! Take some steps to protect both yourself and your community from this menace. Green Bay has already had two alcohol related traffic fatalities for 2016. We don’t need any more.

  1.  Designate a sober driver – and use them.
  2. Use public transportation - Taxi, bus etc.
  3. Plan your ride home before taking your first drink.
  4. Be the designated sober driver for your friends.
  5. If you see an impaired driver, report it.
