OCONTO, WI (WTAQ) - A Pulaski man has been formally charged with hit-and-run involving death for a crash last week.

35-year-old Joseph Anderson appeared in Oconto County court Monday.

Authorities say Anderson struck and killed 51-year-old George Birr of the Sobieski area while he was walking on County Road S on December 21.

A few days later, the Oconto County Sheriff's Department received an anonymous tip from a friend which led them to Anderson.

Anderson is due back in court for his preliminary hearing January 5.

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - Formal charges have been filed against a man in connection with a police-involved shooting earlier this month in the Town of Algoma.

Richard Klemz appeared in Winnebago County court Monday, where bond was set ay $500,000 cash. He returns to court January 7.

Prosecutors filed six charges, including two of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, for the incident on December 10.

The ordeal ended with officers shooting and injuring Klemz at the Algoma Town Hall. But it began when authorities say Klemz threatened to hurt himself and used a knife and hammer to damage property.

Last week, Winnebago County district attorney Christian Gossett ruled that the officers involved in the shooting were justified.

UNDATED (WTAQ) - Lots of Wisconsinites could not wait for the new snow to arrive, because more snowmobile trails are about to open.

Vilas County plans to open its trails Wednesday -- but officials say riders must watch for wet and icy spots, and not ride on the lakes until it gets colder.

Travel Wisconsin.Com says parts of Iron, Ashland, Bayfield, Sawyer, Price, and Burnett counties had at least some of their trails open even before the new snow the past couple days.

Meanwhile, we're getting larger snow totals from Monday's storm -- which was clearing out Tuesday morning.

Sturgeon Bay in Door County picked up 13-and-a-half inches, Tomah in western Wisconsin got 12 inches, and Madison received just over 6 inches.

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - A car stuck on tracks in downtown Appleton was hit by a train Tuesday, causing traffic to be backed-up for over an hour.

Authorities say it happened around 11:05 a.m. at the intersection of College Avenue and Richmond Street.

Police say a vehicle crashed into a car, pushing that car up onto the median and hitting a fence. The first vehicle left the scene, while the struck car was partially over the railroad tracks and stuck on a snowbank.

As soon as officers arrived, they notified the railroad and had a tow truck respond. The driver of the car sat in a squad car for safety.

According to police, a CN railroad train had not received the notification of the accident and hit the vehicle.

The train was going about 20 miles per hour and tried to stop before hitting the car, but could not.

Aurora Health Care unveils plans for pediatric care network

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - Aurora Health Care plans to begin building a network of pediatric specialists throughout eastern Wisconsin, a move that could put the state's largest health care system in competition with Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

The move is the next step toward Aurora's goal of building an integrated health care system — a one-stop shop providing coordinated care for most of a person's or family's health care needs.

Aurora's expansion may include collaborating with Children's Hospital, but it also could mean fewer referrals to the hospital, cutting into the patient volumes needed to support highly specialized pediatric care.

Children's Hospital of Wisconsin is one of the country's largest children's hospitals in part because other hospitals in the Milwaukee area and much of eastern Wisconsin have not provided pediatric care.

GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ) - A family fun center in the Fox Valley abruptly closed Wednesday, but it's not clear why.

Funset Boulevard at 3916 W. College Avenue shut their doors due to what employees say were structural issues related to this week's winter storm.

In a statement e-mailed to WTAQ from Marcus Theatres:

"Due to roofing damage sustained during the recent snowstorm, Marcus Theatres has made the decision to temporarily close Funset Boulevard, pending further evaluation and repairs. Contractors and professionals have been called to the site to conduct a thorough assessment of the situation. It will be reopened as soon as it is appropriate to do so. The adjacent Hollywood Cinema, a separate building with 14 movie auditoriums, is unaffected and will remain open for business."

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - Almost 20,000 requests have been made for the federal government to either investigate the Wisconsin murder convictions of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey -- or have President Obama pardon the pair.

Three petitions have cropped up on the White House website, after Netflix unveiled the 10-part documentary "Making a Murderer" on December 18th.

Avery and his nephew Dassey were both sent to prison for killing Teresa Halbach in Manitowoc County in 2005.

Avery maintains his innocence, and Dassey had claimed he was coerced into confessing -- but Sheriff Robert Hermann says the documentary does not have all the facts.

Each of the three petitions must have at least 100,000 signatures by late January in order for the White House to consider them.
