Green Bay city leaders ban flying drones at special events

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - City officials in Green Bay have enacted a ban on flying drones at special events.

The City Council voted unanimously this week to approve the ban on flying unmanned aerial vehicles at such events.

Green Bay is the first city in Wisconsin to have such an ordinance. City Attorney James Mueller says the ban came out of a request by the Green Bay Packers for an ordinance that lets police regulate drone use at Lambeau Field.

The ban applies to special events in Green Bay, meaning events that interfere with street and sidewalk traffic or the normal use of public areas. The ordinance exempts public safety officials.

Those who want to fly drones can get permission from event organizers or the Federal Aviation Administration.

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - Inspired by similar attractions in Green Bay, Milwaukee and Madison, volunteers have put together the first ever Fox Cities Restaurant Week.

The event runs from Thursday August 27 through Thursday September 3.

"We received a lot of responses from the restaurants that were along the lines of thank you we've been waiting for this," says event coordinator Samantha Dennis. "They're really hungry for something like this, they've seen it work in their neighboring communities, and have wanted it in the Fox Cities area."

Participating restaurants throughout the Fox Cities will be offering price-fixed, three-course menu options: $12 for lunch, and $25 or $35 options for dinner. The offer excludes beverages, tax and gratuity.

No tickets, coupons or cards are required for redemption. However, reservations are recommended to reserve your spot.

You can see the complete list of participating restaurants, hours and menus by clicking here.

Since it's the first turn for Fox Cities Restaurant Week, Dennis says customer feedback is important.

"We will be doing surveying, and there also is an incentive for people who fill out a survey," says Dennis. "They will receive $100 in dining gift certificates to the different participating restaurants, and we'll give out 13 of those."

Diners are encouraged to share their experiences and post photos of their meals using the hashtag #foxfoodie. Like and follow Fox Cities Restaurant Week on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@foxfoodie).

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - It’s a chronic shortage.

Wisconsin’s $18 billion tourism industry can’t find enough workers and it is struggling to train the next generation of managers.

The rapidly-growing market segment accounts for nearly 200,000 Wisconsin jobs.

Several resorts in the northeast part of the state partnered with Lakeland College this spring to help train potential workers.

Students taking hospitality management courses at Lakeland are offered entry level positions or internships. By the time they graduate, they have the equivalent of two years work experience.

TOWN OF CHILTON, WI (WTAQ) - An old dairy barn in Calumet County was destroyed by fire Sunday.

Fire crews were called to 2990 State Road in the Town of Chilton around 1 p.m. for reports of a structure fire. By the time firefighters arrived, the barn was fully engulfed.

The property was a former dairy farm, according to fire officials. Animals do live on the property.

No one was hurt and it appears all the animals got out safely. Several dozen cows were seen roaming in a fenced-in area of the property as crews cleaned up the scene, according to authorities.

High winds and no fire hydrants made battling the blaze more difficult. Multiple agencies were called to help, from as far away as Brown County. Most of the aid came from water trucks shuttling water to the scene.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The Green Bay Packers made it official Monday by confirming what has been feared since the 1st quarter of Sunday's pre-season game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In an e-mailed statement, "It was determined that WR Jordy Nelson sustained a significant right knee injury in yesterday’s game at Pittsburgh. He will miss the remainder of the season."

Nelson was scheduled to undergo an MRI Monday, and it's believed based on multiple media accounts that he tore the ACL in his left knee.

With Nelson out, second-year receiver Davante Adams would move into a starting role and the Packers would need to count immediately on Jeff Janis and rookie Ty Montgomery.

ESPN reported Monday that the Packers were interested in talking with former Colt Reggie Wayne, but Wayne was in New England, taking a physical with the Patriots. New England didn't let Wayne get out of town, signing him to a one-year contract.

Big announcement for Oshkosh Defense

Oshkosh, WI (WTAQ) - A Wisconsin-based manufacturer has won a major contract to build the military's new combat vehicle that will replace the Humvee troop carriers.

The Department of Defense on Tuesday awarded the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) contract to Oshkosh Defense. The $6.7 billion contract is expected to support thousands of jobs.

Oshkosh Defense officials say the JLTV is scheduled to replace about 55,000 Humvees by 2040. Around 49,000 would be built for the Army with the rest going to the Marines.

The JLTV vehicle is designed to provide more protection against roadside bombs and mines than Humvees, without being as big as another military vehicle called the MRAP, or Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, which is also produced by Oshkosh.

Oshkosh Defense eliminated about 760 jobs last summer because of declining defense spending, but this contract could require the company to hire more workers.

The $169 million project will sit on the grounds of NEW Water, near the mouth of the Fox River.

Once complete in the second-half of 2018, it will meet stricter regulations, increase capacity and replace aging facilities.

Cautious optimism about the Asian Carp in local waters

Madison, WI (WTAQ) - New test results show no new signs of the invasive Asian Carp in the Milwaukee River and the Fox River in northeast Wisconsin.

The U-S Fish-and-Wildlife Service and the state D-N-R took 160 water samples in May and June.

It found no new D-N-A evidence of the bloated carp that's been known to gobble up the food that native fish eat, and threaten the fishing industry throughout the Great Lakes.

Last year, there was genetic evidence that an Asian Carp got into the Fox River -- and another bloated fish may have gotten into Sturgeon Bay.

Subsequent sampling turned up no new D-N-A. The Sheboygan River was also tested in 2013, with no positive results.

The D-N-R's Bob Wakeman says it's good news -- but it does not guarantee that there are no Asian carp in the waters.

Gas prices in Wisconsin are heading south again

Milwaukee, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin gas prices are 18-cents cheaper than a week ago, as a B-P refinery in Whiting, Indiana returns to full production.

State motorists were jolted earlier this month when a crude distillation unit failed at Whiting.

Prices for regular unleaded jumped by more than 30-cents in just two days, and were as high as 2.95-a-gallon a week ago.

This morning, the Triple-"A" reports a statewide average of 2.77 -- still 22-cents higher than the national average.

Nick Jarmusz of the Wisconsin Triple-"A" expects prices to fall closer to the norm, as the refinery increases fuel supplies to markets throughout the Midwest.

Before the breakdown, Wisconsin gas prices were falling in the midst of record-low crude oil costs.

A total of 14 charges were filed by the International Association of Firefighters Local 141.

The commission ruled that most of the charges failed to prove who was harmed, or what rules were broken.

The union claimed its members were put in harms way because, among other things,  leadership failed to order equipment maintenance and safety inspections.

Muller's attorney says they're considering legal action against the union.
