BELLEVUE, WI (WTAQ) - The Brown County Sheriff’s office says a crackdown on Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) took place October 9th through October 11th. And, unfortunately, it was a big success.

24 people arrested across northeast Wsiconsin, the most in the two years the taskforce has been operating.

Arrests include the first female since the program began.

The task force of several agencies across the region is part of an on-going proactive, online investigation relating to the exploitation of children through the use of online personal advertisements.

Captain Dave Konrath says none of those arrested had direct contact with kids through their work or after work activities.

He also says parents need to do a better job in keeping track of their kids online and social media activities.

Road salt prices rise from last year for Wisconsin municipalities

MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) - It will probably be a while before road salt is put on Wisconsin streets and highways -- but it won't be cheap.

Manitowoc County Highway Commissioner Gary Kennedy said his office will pay $63 a ton, up from $55 the year before.

However, he does not expect either a financial or a supply problem -- since Manitowoc County uses a five-year average to determine both. He said all of Wisconsin's 72 counties got decent prices for their salt, as the state sets a contracted price each year.

Kennedy tells the Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter that some counties in Ohio had bids of over $100 a ton.

Manitowoc city division manager Randy Junk says the state sets its contracted price for salt early each year, so the localities are assured of getting the best possible prices.

He said the city would be fine, noting that Manitowoc has about 700 tons of salt left over from last winter -- when it was rationed due to abnormal snowfall and cold temperatures.

Heavy rain possible for Northeast Wisconsin tonight

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The northeast quarter of Wisconsin could be in for heavy rains Monday night.

The National Weather Service office in Green Bay said the Fox Valley, the Northwoods, central Wisconsin, and east central areas could all get 1 to 2 inches -- and with all the leaves on the ground, urban floods might occur if storm drains get clogged up.

Rivers and streams could rise as well, but those waters are expected to stay within their banks.

You can follow the latest radar here.

Forecasters blame it on a sprawling low pressure system that's supposed to lift into Illinois Monday night and remain stationary through Wednesday.

The Weather Service office in Milwaukee says there's a slight chance of thunderstorms in the southern part of the state, with moderate to sometimes-heavy rain predicted. Those areas had light rain Monday afternoon, with an inch or more possible.

Other regions expect lighter rain Monday night, and it's supposed to ease up a little Tuesday throughout the state.

Scattered light rain showers are predicted Wednesday and Thursday. Drier and cooler weather is forecast for the weekend.

MENASHA, WI (WTAQ) - Authorities in the Fox Valley say high winds contributed to a crash Tuesday afternoon that shut down the Roland Kampo Bridge.

Around 1:20 p.m., Winnebago County sheriff's deputies say a UPS truck heading eastbound on Highway 441/10 struck a temporary concrete construction barrier. Authorities indicate the crash pushed other barriers into the westbound lanes of the bridge over Little Lake Butte des Morts.

Emergency crews are helping the crashed vehicles, cleaning up spilled fuel and pushing the barricades back into place.

Westbound lanes have now re-opened as of 5 p.m.

Most propane customer complaints last winter from Marinette County

MARINETTE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin propane customers filed over 400 complaints with state consumer officials, saying they were shorted during last winter's fuel shortages.

FOX 11 found that almost two-thirds of the complaints involved Customer's Gas of Amberg in Marinette County. Consumers said they obtained prepaid contracts for propane fuel going into last winter -- but once the shortages hit and the prices spiked, they stopped getting shipments and never got refunds later.

FOX 11 also checked Marinette County court records, and found that Customer's Gas owed a supplier over $308,000 for fuel that was delivered -- and most of it was never paid for.

AmeriGas filed suit in 2012 over the alleged lack of payment. The case was settled in June, but the TV station said Customer's Gas did not pay any of the judgment or related legal fees.

FOX 11 said the company's Amberg headquarters appear mostly vacant, and its owner could not be reached. It said some of Consumer's Gas equipment was sold to another propane dealer.

The state's consumer agency is still investigating the matter.

Some people have filed small claims' judgments against their supplier -- but Marinette County District Allen Brey said he did not expect any customers to get money back.

FOX 11's Web site also lists 8 suppliers which settled state consumer cases, giving out a total of about $23,000 in refunds and credits.

Bates was a teacher's aide at Appleton West High School for 3 years, until she quit soon after police questioned her. She's accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old boy whom she claimed was her soulmate.

Bates was charged in her home county of Calumet and the county where she worked, Outagamie. Online court records said she faced a total of a half-dozen charges of sex assault by a school staffer.

The cases in the two counties are being consolidated, and a status conference is set for November 4th in Calumet County.

Preparing for manufacturing careers can now start earlier for local high schoolers

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The future manufacturing workforce in Wisconsin is being trained right now thanks to a new lab unveiled at Green Bay West High School Wednesday.

Bay Link Manufacturing provides all juniors and seniors in the Green Bay Area Public School District the chance to experience metal machining and welding. But Bay Link Manufacturing coordinator Andy Belongia says students will learn more than that.

"They'll also bid a job to the customers, to get a quote on how much it's going to cost to make it, ordering materials, delivering the product to customers," says Belongia. "We also have the employability skills...showing up to work on time and taking pride in their work."

12 students had to go through a job-like interview process to get accepted and will earn high school and technical college credit. Belongia says the popularity for this initial class was amazing.

"We had more students apply to get into the program than we had spots," says Belongia.

West Senior Katie Clark was one of the 12 that got in for the first run.

"It's all hands-on, I like doing this," says Clark. "I was in woodworking before, but I like using all the machine tools better."

The nearly $400,000 lab was funded through public and private partnerships and donations.

MRAP cost benefit will be studied in Appleton

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - City leaders in Appleton have approved looking into whether military-style armored vehicles are worth the expense.

“This is not a resolution saying let’s get rid of this immediately. This is saying let’s do our due diligence on how this was acquired, why this was acquired, and if this is really a need for the community,” Appleton Alderperson Polly Dalton said according to FOX 11.

But some alderpersons feel the extra scrutiny is unnecessary.

“It seemed like an unnecessary effort on our part to just review this one single piece of equipment to see the finances are involved, the expenses involved, we don’t’ do that with our other equipment,” said Appleton Alderperson Peter Stueck.

The council voted 10-2 to study whether MRAPs cost too much to operate. It's expected be done in the next 45 days.

The city shares the MRAP vehicle with Outagamie County. The county received it from the federal government because the vehicle had been decommissioned.
