Clintonville Mayor Judy Magee takes leave of absence

CLINTONVILLE, WI (WTAQ) - Clintonville's mayor is taking a leave of absence to deal with some mental health issues.

In a letter sent to FOX 11, Mayor Judy Magee says she's taking a medical leave in order to get her mental health back to a good place.

Magee goes on to say that city government has been dealing with a lot of turmoil since April. She adds that numerous threats have been made to her, attacking her work.

Mayor Magee indicates that she will return by late November and that she takes her job very seriously.

Here’s the letter:

It is with regret that I inform the residents of Clintonville that I am taking a Medical Leave of Absence from my position as Mayor. As many of you know, since the last election on April 1, 2014, there has been a great deal of turmoil in City government. I am honored to be elected by the voters and I take the position very seriously.

However, since April 1 I have had numerous threats made to me and my position, six members of the Council are regularly attacking the work I do, we have had a Council member resign, the City Administrator resign and a new City Attorney who is related to two Council members.

The upcoming budget approval will be worse than any other in terms of cuts that must be made. It is critical at this time that the stakeholders (citizens, voters, business owners and neighbors who conduct business in the City) of this community be heard as to what they want the future of our City to look like. The future of Clintonville impacts all the stakeholders who care about the community. I personally do not feel that the majority of this Council is taking us down a positive road. However, I am elected by the citizens and it is difficult to determine from my vantage point what everyone truly wants. As stakeholders if you are content and approve of the actions the Council majority has made in the past four months then perhaps the majority of the Council is acting as you wish them to. If you do not agree with the path we are on it is critical that you speak up and be heard publically. I cannot, along with a small group of Council members, carry the weight of 4,535 people on my shoulders. I intend to first get my mental health back to a good place and then it is my hope that starting immediately you as stakeholders will speak loud and clear as to what you want from your elected officials. I will return to my position when my health is better but no later than November 26, 2014.

In my absence it is the responsibility of Council President Jeannie Schley to act in the absence of the Mayor – her phone number is 715-823-6863. Please note Jeannie Schley does NOT have an e-mail address. I want to state again that I take my position as Mayor very seriously and it is with great regret that I am taking this Leave.

Next regular council meeting is, Tuesday, October 14, 2014 – 6 PM. I am making this request that any agenda items added by the council members, attorney, or anyone else regarding the Mayor is to be held in open session so that the taxpayers of Clintonville know what is being said about me!

Green Bay Packers host division rival Minnesota Vikings tonight

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The Green Bay Packers will try to move closer to first place in the NFC North tonight, when they host the Minnesota Vikings.

It's the Packers' third divisional game in 12 days, after they lost at Detroit and then crushed the Bears in Chicago last Sunday. The Lions lead the division at 3-1. All three other teams in the North are 2-2.

Tonight, the Packers will try to step up their running game within their rapid no-huddle offense. Starting running back Eddie Lacy had just 17 carries against the Bears for 48 yards, and backup James Starks did not play at all. Coach Mike McCarthy called Starks' omission a mistake.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who had 302 passing yards and 4 touchdowns last week, said the Packers need more balance.

It will be interesting to see, though, whether Green Bay can achieve it against an improved Minnesota defense under new Vikings' coach Mike Zimmer. Packers' quarterbacks' coach Alex Van Pelt says there are lots of ways a defense can pressure an opponent -- and Zimmer uses them all.

Zimmer went 2-0 against Green Bay when he ran Cincinnati's defense. Last September, his Bengals held Rodgers to just a 64.5 passer rating.

Packers Preview begins at 5 p.m., with kickoff set for 7:20 p.m. on 1360/97.5 WTAQ News Talk Sports.

Formal charges filed against Tuinstra in Berlin double homicide

BERLIN, WI (WTAQ) - A neighbor reportedly overheard a man telling somebody on the phone he would kill that person.

Prosecutors said Nicholas Tuinstra of Berlin made that remark, about 3 weeks before he allegedly shot and killed his wife Melissa and her new lover, Justin Daniels.

The 33-year-old Tuinstra was charged Thursday in Green Lake County with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide in the shootings, which occurred late Saturday night around Melissa's apartment.

The neighbor told police that Nicholas Tuinstra made his phone threat around the time she moved out of their house. Another neighbor told authorities Tuinstra was suicidal, and he said Daniels should do him a favor and kill him.

The homicides took place just two days after the Tuinstras filed for divorce.

Prosecutors said Nicholas denied at first that he went to his estranged wife's apartment, but later admitted doing so.

The couple's 8-year-old daughter was with her paternal grandparents at the time of the slayings. Once police learned she was missing, they issued an Amber Alert -- and she and her father were found safe a few hours later in nearby Marquette County.

Tuinstra was scheduled to make his first court appearance Thursday afternoon in Green Lake.

MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) - A Manitowoc County judge will not allow a woman charged with child abuse to see her children.

Ruthann Gneiser, who's accused of beating and scalding her 5-year-old special needs son, asked for the no contact provision of her bond to be rescinded.

On Thursday, the Clerk of Courts office said that Judge Jerome Fox denied the motion.

Court documents reveal that Gneiser admitted to authorities that she slapped her son repeated on his back. Gneiser said the boy defecated in his pants, so she put him in the bathtub that was filled with scalding hot water for about a minute. She claimed she didn't realize the water was too hot until she put her hand in it.

The boy was treated for bruising and burns that doctors at Children's Hospital in Wauwatosa say cover about 8 percent of his body. Investigators had previously said the burns covered more than half of his body.

Gneiser is due in court for a preliminary hearing on October 15.

Bemis holds groundbreaking for $25M Oshkosh expansion

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - One of Wisconsin's best known packaging companies is expanding a plant in Oshkosh.

Bemis broke ground Thursday for a $25 million addition to a facility that makes sterile packages for the health care industry.

Governor Scott Walker was on hand. He said Bemis is making a huge investment, and state taxpayers will help.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation has loaned Bemis $2 million -- and half of that will be forgiven if the firm creates 160 full-time jobs over the next 3 years. That would double the plant's current workforce.

The city of Oshkosh is kicking in $2 million in tax reimbursements over the next decade.

Bemis CEO Bill Austen said the U.S. health packaging market is growing rapidly, and his company wants to remain ahead of the industry.

(WNFL)- Aaron Rodgers threw his 200th career touchdown pass, as the Green Bay Packers crushed Minnesota 42-10 on a rainy night at Lambeau Field. The milestone throw went to rookie Davante Adams just before the end of the first half.  Rodgers also had TD passes to Randall Cobb and a 66-yarder to Jordy Nelson, as the Packers went up 28-0 at halftime and rolled from there. Green Bay also had a solid running game for the first time this season, with 156 yards on the ground -- 105 from Eddie Lacy, who had two second-half rushing touchdowns.  Rodgers completed 12-17 passes for 156 yards, and Matt Flynn completed 3-5 in relief with an interception.  Nine Packers caught passes -- Cobb and Lacy three each for 61 combined yards. The Green Bay defense sacked Vikings' quarterback Christian Ponder six times.  Ponder ran for Minnesota's only touchdown.  He completed 22-of-44 passes for 222 yards and a pair of interceptions -- one of which went to Julius Peppers, who ran it back 49 yards for a touchdown. Peppers became the first player in NFL history to amass ten career picks and 100 sacks. Ponder started in place of Teddy Bridgewater, who was inactive due to a sprained ankle.  Vikings' running back Matt Asiata had 15 carries for 72 yards, and Adam Thielen had four catches for 57 yards.  Ex-Packer Greg Jennings had two receptions for 31 yards.  A 17-yarder to Jennings late in the third quarter marked only the second time in the game that Minnesota drove into Green Bay territory. Packers' defensive end Datone Jones left in the second quarter with an ankle injury and did not return.  Green Bay is now 8-1-1 against the Vikings in its last ten meetings. Minnesota dropped to 2-3.  Green Bay is now 3-2, a half-game behind NFC North-leading Detroit. The Packers next game is a week from Sunday at Miami.

MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) - Two people from rural Manitowoc County are due in court on Monday, for allegedly hoarding and neglecting over 40 cats and dogs.

55-year-old Keith Vonkampen and 57-year-old Laura Roth, both of rural Kiel, are each charged with four misdemeanors.

Prosecutors said the pets lived in squalor at a home which Vonkampen owns and Roth rents. He told authorities that 2 dogs and 6 puppies in the house were his.

Officials said the home had dirty kennels, litter boxes, and water and food dishes. Prosecutors said many of the cats had eye and respiratory infections, and many dogs had ear and skin infections.

They were surrendered to the Lakeshore Humane Society. The shelter's manager said about three-fourths of the pets are already being adopted.

The town constable said an animal rescue group confiscated over 40 animals at the same home early last year.

Both Vonkampen and Roth are charged with mistreating animals and not providing proper food.

Snow in forecast for much of Wisconsin Friday night

0
0

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - After the snow and cold dragged into the spring, the "S" word is the last thing many Wisconsinites want to hear.

However, snow is in the forecast for Friday night in much of the Badger State.

The National Weather Service says at least a few snow showers are possible in central and northwest Wisconsin, but rain will be the predominant moisture that comes down. A rainy day is also forecast for Saturday, with dry weather expected statewide on Sunday.

The prediction calls for lows tonight in the mid to upper 30's, highs Saturday in the 40's, and highs on Sunday near 50. That doesn't provide much of a chance to dry out from the heavy rains that covered much of Wisconsin Thursday and Thursday night.

About 2 inches of rain fell at West Salem near La Crosse, and Argonne in Forest County. Wausau and Racine picked up 1.75 inches in the 24 hours ending at 7 a.m., thanks to a low pressure system which moved across Wisconsin.

Major high court ruling impacts same sex marriage in Wisconsin

0
0

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - Wisconsin's constitutional ban on gay marriage and civil unions was thrown out Monday by the U.S. Supreme Court.

With no explanation, the justices refused to consider appeals from the Badger State and four others where officials sought to keep their gay marriage bans -- Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia.

Wisconsin was among 32 states which asked the Supreme Court for a final national ruling on same-sex marriage. But that won't happen, because the justices refused to touch current gay marriage bans in 20 states, or consider reviewing those that have been challenged -- like Wisconsin's.

In Madison, Dane County Clerk Scott McDonell said he was ready to resume issuing same-sex marriage licenses Monday morning. Almost 600 same-sex wedding licenses were issued in Wisconsin after Federal Judge Barbara Crabb ruled in June that the state's gay marriage ban was unconstitutional -- but before the state appealed it.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed Wisconsin's legal challenge on behalf of 8 same-sex couples. One plaintiff, Kathy Heyning, said she's "very happy" to see gay marriage legalized in the Badger State. But she did not expect a ruling to come down until next year, and she would have liked to have seen a decision which covers all 50 states.

As it is, 30 states are now legalizing same-sex marriage. U.S. House Democrat Mark Pocan of Madison, who is gay, said equality is here to stay -- and the court ended what he called a "dark chapter" in Wisconsin in which people were treated as second class citizens depending on who they choose to love.

Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen concedes that his legal fight to preserve the ban is over.

His Justice Department acknowledged that gay marriage is now legal. 59 percent of Wisconsin voters approved the same-sex marriage ban in 2006.

Recent polls, however, showed that most Wisconsin voters did not object to gay weddings.
