GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Downtown Green Bay is welcoming back an old friend.

Jake's Pizza re-opened for business Tuesday in the Broadway District.

“It was the – that was the place to go,” Amanda Novitski of Greenleaf told FOX 11. “It’s just delicious.”

“It was always good pizza – you never had to wonder what it was going to be,” said Ron Gossen of De Pere.

Jake's Pizza closed on Main Street nearly two years ago. However, two sisters with restaurant experience decided to end that pizza drought by bringing the pies back, this time on South Broadway.

“He actually tried to talk us out of it the first few times,” Cara Sanders recalled of the phone calls, early on, with Ronald Jacobson – aka Jake.

Sanders and her sister, Brook, weren’t taking no for an answer. However, they wanted to ensure Jake gave them his blessing – and his recipes.

Jake did, and even decided to come back on to help the venture along with some former employees.

STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A federal appeals court has upheld a 30-year prison sentence for a man convicted of transporting a 13-year-old girl to Wisconsin to have sex with her.

47-year-old Archie Whalen of Maine was convicted of taking the girl from her home at Owensboro Kentucky to Sturgeon Bay in 2009.

An Amber Alert was issued, and authorities found the girl a day later.

Officials said Whalen met the youngster in Maine, when she and her mother lived there for a short time.

The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld both the conviction and the prison sentence, which Whalen is serving in Marion Illinois.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Most Wisconsin public schools are starting their fall classes Tuesday morning.

Almost 880,000 youngsters attended nearly 2,300 school buildings in the last school year. We won't know this fall's enrollment until later this month.

Governor Scott Walker was scheduled to be on hand for the first ringing of the bell at a school in Milwaukee.

State school Superintendent Tony Evers says the new year holds a lot of promise. New tests will be given on the state's tougher Common Core standards for math and English.

A new teacher evaluation system will also be used statewide.

TWO RIVERS, WI (WTAQ) - Communities along Lake Michigan from Port Washington to Two Rivers can apply to become marine sanctuaries.

The designations could bring more protections for natural resources, and more research into various shipwrecks in the big lake.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration designates marine sanctuaries. There's only one along the Great Lakes -- the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Alpena Michigan.

It has a visitor center which attracts 80,000 people a year.

Manitowoc County officials say they could get tourism and educational benefits from a marine sanctuary status.

Officials say the new application area covers 875 square miles of Lake Michigan, with 33 known shipwrecks and possibly many more.

The NOAA expects the first applications for the new status this fall.

Packers will see improved Wilson on Thursday

(WNFL)- The Green Bay Packers can expect to see a much-improved Russell Wilson on Thursday night at Seattle. The former Wisconsin Badgers' quarterback is in his third year in the NFL, all as a starter for the Seahawks. Coach Pete Carroll says he's "thrilled" with how Wilson has matured during the off-season -- after he won a Super Bowl ring for the Seahawks in February. In 13 series during the exhibition games, Wilson had 11 scoring drives -- nine of which ended in touchdowns. He threw for 437 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions while completing 79-percent of his passes. Wilson also scored three rushing TD's. Carroll said Wilson is in "great control" over what's happening on the field -- and he's playing faster and more comfortably than ever. The coach said it helps Seattle including a larger package of plays in its game-plans. Wilson played extensively in the pre-season to develop his rhythm, unlike Packers' QB Aaron Rodgers -- who looked to be in mid-season while playing the two middle exhibitions, and sitting out the first and last.

Guion gets the nod at NT

(WNFL)- Letroy Guion will start at nose tackle for the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night, when they open the NFL's regular season in Seattle. He missed most of training camp with an injured hamstring. Still, defensive coordinator Dom Capers says the 315-pound Guion is ready to step into the spot left by BJ Raji, who's out for the year with a torn biceps muscle. Defensive line coach Mike Trgovac said he's confident that Guion will hold his own against opposing double-teams. The Packers acquired the veteran Guion after the Minnesota Vikings let him go. He's generally more mobile than the Packers' other big men on the defensive front. Second-year pro Josh Boyd replaced Raji after he left the Packers' exhibition against Oakland a week and-a half ago. Capers said he wants Boyd to continue developing in his natural position at defensive end.

Problem gamblers entering busy season with football's kickoff

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - It's prime time for gamblers in Wisconsin, as the football season begins and the Major League Baseball playoffs arrive in a month.

The Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling urges folks to keep an eye on their friends and relatives who gamble a lot. That's especially true as NFL teams march toward the February Super Bowl, when calls for help to the group's gambling hotline are at their peak.

Rose Gruber of the Problem Gambling Council says about half the calls to the help line are from family members noticing issues with loved ones. Family finances often bring those issues to light.

Gruber says there are a few things to remember in playing responsibly -- consider it a cost of entertainment, expect to lose more than you win, stick to a dollar limit, never gamble with credit, don't chase after lost money, and don't use gambling as a crutch to deal with pain or let it take over your life.

The state gambling helpline number is toll free at 1-800-GAMBLE-5.

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - Environmentalists say they want to work with the forest products industry to develop a collaborative solution to a dispute over the Northwoods' timber management.

Paul Strong, a supervisor at the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, said a previous collaboration is a great example. He cited the success of an agreement between Greenpeace and Kimberly-Clark on the use of a material from forests in Canada.

Strong tells the Appleton Post-Crescent that "a collaborative agreement is much better than controversy."

Strong is part of a forestry collaborative that seeks a compromise on 1.5 million acres of national forest land that will please both loggers and environmental interests. It seeks to attract private investment funds, promote the benefits of forest management, and coordinate restoration projects.

The state's two U.S. senators -- Democrat Tammy Baldwin and Republican Ron Johnson -- made separate visits to northern Wisconsin last month, and they vow to work together on the matter until a solution is reached.

Propane industry execs don't expect another winter of supply shortages

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin's propane industry does not expect the kinds of shortages we saw last winter -- when folks struggled to heat their homes as prices skyrocketed.

Chris Tews, president of the Wisconsin Propane Gas Association, says both customers and their dealers are being more pro-active. He says customers are filling their tanks earlier, to take advantage of lower prices.

Suppliers, meanwhile, are increasing their storage capacities to make sure they don't run out.

Appleton supplier Garrow Oil added enough tanks to store about 360,000 gallons of propane -- double their storage capacity from a year ago.

Tews told WBAY-TV in Green Bay that the industry learned a lot from last winter -- when shippers could not get propane quickly enough to the areas where it was needed.

The coldest temperatures in years were partially to blame for the shortage -- along with a closed pipeline, and a heavy demand by farmers to use the fuel to dry their grain.

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - The first two human cases of West Nile virus has been confirmed in the Fox Valley.

According to local health officials, one was found in Winnebago County and the other in Outagamie County.

The virus is spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito and cannot be transmitted person to person. Health officials say few mosquitoes actually carry West Nile and the odds of a person getting it is very low. Most people who are infected will not have any symptoms.

Officials say symptoms could begin 3 to 15 days after being bitten and can include fever, headache, muscle and joint aches, nausea, vomiting, rash and fatigue that can last a few days.

There is no specific West Nile virus treatment other than to treat those symptoms. If you think you have West Nile virus, contact your health care provider.

To eliminate your contact with mosquitoes possibly carrying the virus:

  • Avoid being outside during times of high mosquito activity, specifically during dawn and dusk
  • Use effective mosquito repellent
  • Keep window screens repaired so mosquitoes cannot enter your home
  • Ensure containers with standing water are not left outside
  • Change water in bird baths, pet dishes and wading pools every 3-4 days

He was a full participant at practice yesterday, after being limited earlier in the week. Corner Demetri Goodson will miss tonight's game as he recovers from a concussion. For Seattle, corner Jeremy Lane and linebacker Bruce Irvin are both probable for tonight's contest at Century-Link Field. Lane is coming off a groin injury, and Irvin had an injured hip. Lane is expected to cover Packers' receiver Randall Cobb in the slot. Also, Seahawks backup rusher Christine Michael is out with a bad hamstring. And corner Tharold Simon will have minor surgery for an injured knee. Both teams have been talking up their running games. The Packers sat out Eddie Lacy for virtually all of the pre-season so he wouldn't get hurt. Seattle's Marshawn Lynch missed part of his training camp while holding out for more money. Despite that, Seahawks' coach Pete Carroll says he's never seen Lynch in better shape. N-B-C is showing tonight's league opener. Kickoff is just after 7:30.
