SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) - A northeast Wisconsin man has been committed to a mental institution for 26-and-a-half years, after he held a McDonald's manager hostage in Wittenberg.

29-year-old Travis Keiler of Gillett struck a plea deal that found him not guilty by insanity on two felony charges in Shawano County. Two misdemeanors were dropped.

Keiler surrendered after a two-hour long standoff April 22nd at a combined McDonald's and Shell gas station off Highway 29. Keiler told officers he had just quit a job, and was driving around depressed with a stolen gun before stopping in Wittenberg.

Officials earlier said that Keiler wanted to get into a confrontation with police. He gave others in the building a chance to leave before holding the manager hostage -- and one employee told customers who were outside pumping gas to leave.

No one was hurt.

Report: Wisconsin students will be in more crowded classrooms

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin kids who return to school next week are likely to be in more crowded classrooms than those from 8 years ago.

The Wisconsin Budget Project is out with a new report showing the numbers of public school teachers dropped by 4,300 statewide, in a seven-year period ending in May of 2012.

The group cited figures from the National Center for Education Statistics, showing that Wisconsin had 15.5 students for each teacher in the 2011-12 school year -- up from 14.3 students per instructor in the 2004-'05 term.

The numbers seem to back up what the state's education agency reported recently. It said the Badger State had almost 101,000 full time staff members in the last school year -- from administrators to teachers to support workers.

That was about 3,000 fewer than 5 years earlier, at a time when enrollment rose slightly.

Packers end preseason tonight

(WNFL)- Ted Thompson makes the final calls, but Green Bay Packers' coach Mike McCarthy will also have a big say on who makes the regular season roster. Players on the bubble will have one final chance to impress the top brass tonight, when the Packers host Kansas City in their final exhibition game. At least some jobs are on the line, as the Packers must cut their 75-player roster down to 53 by five pm Saturday. Not all NFL general managers have strong relationships with their head coaches -- but by all accounts, Packers' GM Thompson and McCarthy work very well together. Thompson said he spoke with McCarthy yesterday morning, and affirmed that they must do what's in the best interest of both the Packers and the players. The GM said he and McCarthy are as objective as possible about their evaluations -- and they don't get into who a particular coach or scout likes. The Packers open their regular season a week from tonight at Seattle.

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - For the second time this summer, an invasive worm has been found in Wisconsin which has the potential to damage forests.

The DNR confirms that the Asian crazy worm was spotted in Appleton, after it was first discovered last fall at the UW-Madison arboretum.

The agency is forming a team of experts to advice state officials on what to do about it.

DNR forest specialist Linda Williams says the Asian crazy worm devours nutrients from soil and forest floors -- and that leaves no nutrients for other native species.

The long worm is officially called the "Amynthas Agrestis". It's called a crazy worm because it wriggles heavily when it's handled.

Although it's new to Wisconsin, the worm has been in the eastern and southern U.S. for the past half-century.

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - Normally, interest is high in liquor licenses in Oshkosh.

That’s why city officials are surprised that no one is applying for 3 licenses which are available right now. It’s possible the city will just keep the licenses.

An official with the Oshkosh Tavern League says it may be that potential owners just recognize that running a tavern profitably isn’t an easy task.

The head of the Tavern League of Wisconsin says today’s changing culture means people are more likely to do their drinking at home than they are to go to a bar.
