GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The Green Bay Packers have announced that Family Night is returning this summer on Saturday, August 2.

Tickets for the 14th annual event go on sale June 23 at 9 a.m. They cost $10.

This year's format will differ a bit from years past. The event will be run as more of a traditional practice rather than a full contact intersquad scrimmage.

Family Night will still include 11-on-11 live contact drills, along with various practice elements.

The other family favorite attractions of Family Night are back as well, with the Chili’s “Jersey Off Our Backs” promotion, giving the jerseys worn by the players to members of the crowd.

Also returning, the very popular Copps-Pick ‘n Save Fireworks, closing the evening’s events with a bang. In-stadium activities will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Parking for the event will be $5, with net proceeds to be donated to the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids Program.

WAUPACA, WI (WTAQ) - The man charged with setting a pair of fires in New London last month waived his preliminary hearing Thursday.

A Waupaca County judge has ordered 19-year-old Jesse McLammarah to stand trial on nine charges, including two counts of attempted homicide and two counts of arson.

McLammarah is scheduled to be arraigned June 25.

The first blaze set early on the morning of May 20 injured two people and displaced six others from the apartments above the Copper Shot bar in downtown New London. Authorities indicate McLammarah told them the fire was payback for an unpaid drug debt.

About an hour later, McLammarah allegedly set fire to a playground outside of New London High School.

State High Court Slaps One-Time County D-A

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Former prosecutor and victims' rights advocate Ken Kratz had his law license suspended for four months Friday.

The State Supreme Court ordered the suspension and told the former Calumet County DA to pay almost $24,000 to cover the cost of his disciplinary proceedings.

The 53-year-old Kratz is now a private attorney in West Bend. His suspension begins July 11th.

Kratz resigned his prosecutor's post in 2010, after it was learned that he sent 30 racy text messages to a woman and sought a sexual relationship with her, while prosecuting her ex-boyfriend for abusing her.

Once that hit the news, other women came forward to say Kratz made sexually suggestive remarks to them.

The state's Office of Lawyer Regulation had originally planned not to punish Kratz, after he resigned as chair of the state's Crime Victims' Rights Board. But the OLR did an about face in 2011 amid public pressure.

Friday, Justice David Prosser and Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson wrote separately that the Supreme Court should review the OLR's practices. Prosser also called the order for Kratz to pay the investigative costs "manifestly unfair," since he reported most of his bad behavior himself 13 months before the OLR finally did something about it.

Kratz made national headlines when he sent wrongly convicted rapist Steven Avery to prison for a murder he committed after he got out of prison.

MENASHA, WI (WTAQ) - The city of Menasha has agreed to sell the old River Street Power Plant to a Port Edwards-based food processor.

Simply Incredible Foods plans to use the building to make cranberry juice and sweet frozen cranberries. The company has a patent on its process for sweetening the berries without adding sugar.

For over 50 years, the city-owned power plant provided power to residents. Then it became a steam plant a decade ago, but that operation cost taxpayers millions of dollars. So the city shut it down five years ago. It cost the city $70,000 a year to maintain the vacant site.

City officials say Simply Incredible Foods paid $1 to buy the building, but took responsibility for several improvements in order to make it suitable for food processing.

According to area business leaders, the facility could bring approximately 80 new jobs to the city.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt will meet privately with members of the city council on Tuesday about "options" for the Larsen Green site.

WTAQ learned about the closed-door meetings Friday, and Mayor Schmitt confirmed that he would be providing an update to aldermen about those options.

"The aldermen don't like to hear things last, I'm explaining to them what I'm doing," says Schmitt. "There's no deal, this is strictly what this could be. We did this with the City Deck, with KI, with the Clarion, with the da Vinci School. There's nothing new here."

Schmitt believes he's acting properly, despite a potential perception that he's pressuring city council members.

"I don't pressure aldermen, I inform them, that's my job...to inform the aldermen and their constituents," says Schmitt. "That's what I plan to do next week and the public."

The mayor intends to hold a press conference on Thursday, one day after meeting with stakeholders. WTAQ has learned that a few aldermen have rejected the meeting with the mayor.

The Larsen Green property is where Walmart is looking to get city approval to build a Supercenter. The city's Plan Commission will take up their rezoning proposal Monday at 6 p.m. in the city council chambers.

Green Bay Plan Commission denies Walmart's rezoning request

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Once again, city leaders said no to a proposed Walmart in downtown Green Bay.

The city's Plan Commission voted 3-2 against rezoning the planned unit development of the Larsen Green site. Commissioners Sidney Bremer, Tim Gilbert and Alderman Jerry Wiezbiskie all voted no, while Tim Duckett and Vice Chair Linda Queoff voted yes.

The vote coincided with the recommendation of Green Bay's planning department, who felt the site in the Broadway District should not be rezoned based on factors like inconsistency with the city's Comprehensive Plan and the Downtown Master Plan. They also raised concerns about zoning code requirements for PUDs' and the proposed physical design and development.

Walmart is looking to build a 154,000 square foot Supercenter with more than 600 parking spaces.

"A big box does not fit in there, we have been trying to tell the people that the big box won't fit in there," Wiezbiskie said after the meeting. "To ruin what we've got going on downtown right now would be sacrilege, it would be just horrible."

Most of the speakers during the three-and-a-half hour meetings' public comment period voiced opposition to the plan, citing everything from land value, traffic problems to safety of neighborhood children.

After the vote, Walmart spokesperson Lisa Nelson was brief in her comments.

"Our only thing is we appreciate the plan commission and look forward to going to the city council," said Nelson, who said she wasn't surprised by the outcome.

The city council could still approve the rezoning of the property when it takes the issue up later this month.

Should Walmart leave town following another negative outcome, and the city takes ownership of the property should On Broadway, Inc. have their bank move forward with foreclosure proceedings, is there another option on the table? Wiezbiskie was coy when asked.

"I haven't been privy to that information, but I just have an inkling that's something's gelling, I just don't know," Wiezbiskie said, confirming that he had scheduled a meeting with Mayor Jim Schmitt Tuesday to discuss potential options. However, the east side Alderman said he had to cancel due to an unforeseen out-of-town personal trip.

GAB to certify candidates for August primary ballot

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The Wisconsin elections' panel will certify candidates Tuesday for the August 12th state and federal primaries.

17 candidates have had their nomination papers challenged to one degree or another -- and the Government Accountability Board will decide whether those challenges are valid. Those challenges could be enough to keep at least some candidates off the ballot -- including Assembly Democrat Brett Hulsey, who's running against front-runner Mary Burke for their party's nomination for governor.

Four state legislative incumbents have had their papers challenged -- Milwaukee Assembly Democrats JoCasta Zamarripa and Mandela Barnes, Assembly Republican Kathy Bernier of the Chippewa Falls area, and Senate Republican Frank Lasee of the Green Bay area.

It took board staffers longer than normal to review the nomination papers, mainly because of a new law that requires petition signers to print their names legibly, in addition to writing them.

Critics have said the Board was too strict in following that law. Bernier, who heads the Assembly elections panel, planning to ask the board today to ease up.
